X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Posted on December 14, 2008 by Ching under Movies.
Brian and I got to watch the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie trailer before The Day the Earth Stood Still. It looks like it is going to be such an amazing movie. Come to think of it, I think maybe I gave The Day the Earth Stood Still an extra half star because of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine preview. The Wolverine movie is definitely on our “movies to watch” list, along with Star Trek and Terminator Salvation. I think Christian Bale will make a fantastic John Connor. I’m really looking forward to watching it.
Anyway, Hugh Jackman is amazing as Wolverine. They couldn’t have picked a better actor to play this X-Men character. Naturally, I had to find out as much as I could about the upcoming movie and came up with this alternate trailer that was played at this year’s Comic Con. Check it out below.

Hardwicke will not be directing “New Moon”
Posted on December 9, 2008 by Ching under Movies, Web.
It’s amazing what you find out when you have a lot of time on your hands. You guessed it. I am at home sick today. Bedridden. Thank God for laptops and wireless internet. I may be bedridden, but at least I’m not bored. How can you be bored when the vast world wide web awaits? LOL.
I have something else to be thankful for today. Summit has confirmed that Catherine Hardwicke will not be directing the Twilight sequel New Moon. I’m glad they are replacing her because there were just so many things about Twilight that bugged me. Anyway, I’m anxious to find out who they select to fill director position.
Incidentally, I submitted my first IMDb correction-slash-update-request today (reference number 081209-195552-238000). I noticed that Hardwicke still has New Moon listed in her filmography credits. I requested the correction citing Summit’s recent press release. There’s no point hanging on to what was.

Finally Got to See Twilight
Posted on November 29, 2008 by Ching under Movies, Reviews.
Managed to talk Brian into taking me to see Twilight this afternoon. It was a bit of a disappointment. It did not do the book justice at all. This is a perfect example of why I loathe reading books before watching the movie version. Despite my apparent lack of imagination, they somehow never live up to my expectations.
Then again, if I would have watched the movie first and find it spectacular then I probably wouldn’t want to read the books. Similarly, if I really enjoy the movie and think it is fantastic then sometimes I don’t feel the need to read the book, or I think that reading the book might ruin the movie somehow. So you’re damned if you do, and damned if you don’t. I guess if I really want to read the book, the only way to go about it is read it before watching the movie and just hoping that the movie doesn’t suck.
I guess I’m kind of glad that I started reading the books first because I definitely would not want to read them after such an unimpressive movie. The movie plot followed the book for the most part, but they took liberties and rearranged the events and cut some stuff out. I’m sure all of this is necessary, but I think they could have come up with a better screenplay.
Casting could have been better also. The vampire characters were not nearly half as beautiful as the book made them out to be. Edward could have been more handsome, and Carlisle too. Alice was okay, but I imagined her hair shorter. Rosalie definitely should have been more beautiful (no offense to Nikki Reed because is definitely a babe in her own right, I think maybe she just looks better as a tan brunette). None of them met my expectations. Then again, I could have been distracted by the horrible makeup and bad acting. =P
I told Brian that the movie was only worth two and a half stars in my book. Brian said he could have waited for it to come out on Netflix, but it wasn’t as bad as that. He gives it three stars. I’m thinking that he wouldn’t be so forgiving if he read the book. I guess the book kind of ruined the movie for me. I can’t decide, though. I’m not sure if the movie was bad because I read the book prior or if it was just poorly done altogether and reading the book or not reading the book wouldn’t have made a difference. I just hope they do a better job on the sequel.

Michelle Monaghan
Posted on October 19, 2008 by Ching under Movies, Reviews.
Just finished a Michelle Monaghan movie marathon. First, we caught The Heartbreak Kid (2007) on Showtime. I had seen it before, but Brian hadn’t. I watched it one night at poker while waiting for Brian. I had gotten knocked out early (really early), while he made it to the final table. Needless to say, I had hours to kill. Luckily, he had some movies I hadn’t seen yet loaded on his Cowon. I got to watch both Juno
and Heartbreak Kid
that same night.
Heartbreak Kid was okay. It’s not one of Ben Stiller’s best. I totally loved Juno
, though.
Made of Honor (2008) arrived in the mail today. Brian says he rented it for me, but I think he secretly wanted to see it. He won’t admit it, but he’s a sucker for romantic comedies. Anyway, we figured we’d watch it before bed. We didn’t realize until the movie started that the female lead is played by Michelle Monaghan also. She’s been in a lot of movies!
The movie was better than I expected. It was nice to see Kevin McKidd, though his was more of a supporting role. I really loved him in Rome, the one TV series that got us to sign up for HBO — which we promptly canceled after the series ended. Incidentally, we’ve got HBO again because of True Blood.
What I liked about Made of Honor is that it’s light and heart-warming; there were some funny moments, but they weren’t over-the-top funny; and it totally proves my theory that men and women cannot have platonic relationships. Sooner or later the truth comes out that one or both have feelings for the other person. What I didn’t like about it is that it romanticized being a man-ho, like it’s totally acceptable.
I guess it gives hope to the lonely man-hos of the world. You too can find true love. After all, everyone deserves a shot at happily ever after right?

Hard Candy (2005)
Posted on October 18, 2008 by Ching under Movies, Reviews.

Ellen Page in Hard Candy (2005), a twisted movie depicting what can happen when the predator becomes the prey.
If you thought that Ellen Page was great in Juno, you have to see Hard Candy
.
She is fantastic in it. I can’t believe that I hadn’t seen in until now. And, I can’t believe that Brian didn’t want to see it.
I added it to my Netflix queue without having watched its trailer or preview and without any preconceived notions so I really didn’t know what it would be about. Brian started the movie for me before his nap. When read the description on the sleeve, he made a comment about it being another “Lolita” movie. I asked him what he meant. He replied simply that it is a movie about a teenage girl who hooks up with an old guy. That is totally not the case. Well, that’s what Jeff (the male character in the movie thinks)… But he had no idea what he was getting himself into. There are just some really twisted people out there.
Hard Candy is an intense thriller that is refreshingly original. What impressed me most is that it kept me interested despite having only two characters. I also liked the twist of having the prey become the predator. Throughout the movie you are constantly teetering back and forth between rooting for either character and you’re constantly questioning. Is Jeff really a bad guy? Did he really hurt those girls? Is Hayley justified in her vigilantism? Or is she just really demented?
The end of the movie left me feeling that this is one movie that is a must-see for those guys who keeping getting busted on Dateline NBC’s “To Catch a Predator” series. I think it would really make them think twice about what they’re doing. Seriously.
