Khao Lad Nha Kai
Posted on June 13, 2012 by Ching under Food and Drink.
I finally got to try #17 Khao Lad Nha Kai. Yep, we had Thai House again last Friday. Their food is so yummy. It’s hard to resist. I will spare you the photo of Brian’s food, though. He got the Thai fried rice with chicken, again. How predictable, right?
Anyway, the #17 is really good. It’s probably one of my favorites at Thai House. Though, the #15 and the #11 are both really delicious also. If you’re apprehensive about trying Thai food because of the spiciness of the dishes, then the #17 is a great place to start. It’s not spicy at all. If I had to compare it to another dish, I would say that it’s a lot like Moo Goo Gai Pan. That’s what it reminds me of, anyway.

Birthday Munchies
Posted on June 13, 2012 by Ching under Food and Drink.
We had munchies at the movie theater on Sunday, but that was pretty much late lunch. I think I ate a little bit before going to the gym, but that was it. We were starving by the time we got to the theater. Of course, I always feel famished after working out with Amie on Sundays.
I was good and only had water. Brian had a Stella. He realized that he liked it when we were at Sabor celebrating with Marielkis on Friday night. They didn’t have Sam Adams, which is his usual beer. He ordered a Stella instead and found that he actually likes it better. I actually liked it too. Now we’ve found beer that we can both drink.
After the movie we went to Abuelo’s for drinks and munchies. Brian and I ended up getting the chocolate cake thing because they were out of tres leches. I know. How lame, right? Anyway, it was all for the best. Their tres leches probably wouldn’t have been as good as the one we had at Sabor the other night, anyway. LOL.
Thanks to Jay and Becca for coming out to drink with us on Sunday night. Salud!

Brian’s Birthday Movie
Posted on June 13, 2012 by Ching under Movies.
Earlier this year Brian said that he wanted to see Prometheus for his birthday movie. Yes, so even though I took him to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, I still had to take him to the movies on the weekend of his birthday. Brian is a spoiled brat. That is all I have to say about that. At least we compromised on a 3:45 pm showing, so I didn’t have to miss my workout. Ever since I started teaching Zumba, I only get to see Amie on Sundays. I hate missing Sundays because it’s my favorite workout day. We do an hour of intense, high impact Zumba, followed by 15 minutes of gut-wrenching abs. I’m not exaggerating either. Amie’s ab workout is so tough that the times when we do just plain, ol’ crunches feel like a break.
Anyway, the compromise (attending Amie’s Sunday Zumba class at the West Central Genesis) meant having to go straight from the gym to the theater since we were coming from way out West to way East where 13th Avenue Warren is… Don’t worry. We showered at the gym. LOL.
Brian’s mom and dad joined us for the movie. It was good, but not great. The positives and negatives stemmed from the same thing. I thought it was good that the movie could stand alone, meaning you don’t really have to be familiar with the Alien movie franchise to understand what’s going on. At the same time, I don’t think there were enough references to the other movies in the series for the hardcore Alien geeks. The movie was just okay for me. Plus, how do you put someone like Charlize Theron in a movie and not show her in her underwear? That was so disappointing!
[CORRECTION] They did show her in underwear, but it was brief and they weren’t the sexy kind. LOL. [/CORRECTION]
Kidding aside, Philly D was right when he mentioned there were lots of random outbursts of emotion. I liked Noomi Rapace in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series and she did a good job in this movie, but she would have these random emotional outbursts that sometimes seemed out of place. I’m sure she was just following the director’s instructions, though.
In one scene, she and her boyfriend got into an emotional conversation about her being infertile and not being able to bear children. I was like, “Is she sure that she’s not pregnant because she’s been very emotional since the beginning of the movie?” LOL. She does end up getting impregnated with this alien thing, but I won’t say any more in case you actually want to see the film.
Anyway, Brian decided to take a vacation day today to celebrate his birthday. As if we haven’t celebrated enough already. LOL. Because I’m a fantastic wife, I took a vacation day as well to keep him company. Brian is a hardcore movie geek so, naturally, we’re going to the movies again. This time we’re going to go see Snow White and the Huntsman. Charlize happens to be in this movie also. Maybe I’ll get to see her half-naked in this one. LOL.

Post Zumba-Fest Dinner
Posted on June 13, 2012 by Ching under Food and Drink.
Brian, Jeri, Jeri’s husband Martin, Hideki, and I went to Wasabi for dinner after the outdoor Zumba class at the Wichita River Festival block party on Saturday night. I don’t know if it was the hunger or the heat, but I was a little cranky that night. I felt fine after the food came out, though.
I think it was Jeri and Martin’s first time there. We recommended our favorites: stone henge and shrimp tempura crazy roll. We also had some edamame and crab cakes to start. I love the crab cakes at Wasabi because they have a little kick. Not spicy, but just enough to set them apart from the usual crab cakes at other restaurants.
Our server was really nice and comped the edamame. I think he felt bad because we sat and waited for a long time before being helped. The restaurant was abnormally busy that night. Possibly due to Riverfest, which I’m sure brought a lot of people downtown. I think they had a combination of post block party and pre fireworks diners. Our server was pretty good, though. He did his best to take care of us despite the busy night they were having. And, of course, the food is always delicious.
We had a good time at dinner, enjoying some tasty sushi while visiting with Hideki, Jeri, and Martin. They were great dinner companions. We should totally do that again some time!

Usuluteco El Salvadorean Restaurant
Posted on June 11, 2012 by Ching under Food and Drink, Reviews.
Brian and I tried a new restaurant over the weekend. We’d heard so many good things that we just had to try it. It’s El Salvadorean. Our server spoke to me only in Spanish so I ordered in Spanish. Apparently, I made a face, so Brian got worried and asked what was going on. I told him it was a surprise. Well, that wasn’t the right thing to say because it freaked him out even more. He insisted on knowing exactly what was going on. So I explained that when I asked for water, she asked me if I wanted pineapple or tamarind. I made a face because I was confused about the flavors. That would make it juice, not water. She said it was delicious and that I would like it so I picked pineapple, as Brian has had pineapple juice before and liked it. He’s never had tamarind before. Anyway, I think the pineapple water is pretty popular because I saw the same thing being delivered to people at the other tables.
I thought the pineapple water was awesome. Brian didn’t like it as much. It had chunks of fresh pineapple so it’s a lot like pulpy orange juice. Brian doesn’t like pulp. I felt bad but, at the same time, figured there’d be more of the yummy pineapple water for me to drink. LOL.
Brian ordered the papusas con todo. Con todo means it’s filled with everything: meat, beans, and cheese. Brian said it was delicious, but could have used more meat filling.
I had the fried tilapia with rice and beans. I believe it was the special for the day. I love, love, love tilapia so I was super thrilled to find it on the menu. It was good, but I couldn’t help but wish I had some soy sauce for dipping.
I really liked Usuluteco. It seemed very authentic. The only downside for me is the location. It’s so far away. Then again, that’s a good thing. Otherwise, Brian would be eating out there more frequently, and well know that we shouldn’t be eating out so much. LOL.
