Lovin’ Ryan Reynolds
Posted on July 25, 2009 by Ching under Movies.
I’m really lovin’ Ryan Reynolds right now. Brian took me to see to The Proposal last weekend and I really enjoyed it. Surprisingly, more so so than I enjoyed The Hangover. I guess I’m more of a romantic comedy type of girl, rather than that crazy, slapstick humor type stuff.
Anyway, it got me to thinking how much I have enjoyed the films that Ryan Reynolds has been in. Here are some of my favorites:
I love how funny he is, no matter what movie he is in. Ryan Reynolds has been cast as the lead in a couple of new movies slated for 2010: The Green Lantern and Deadpool. I can’t wait to watch these movies and see what he has in store for us all.

I Have Been Assimilated
Posted on July 4, 2009 by Ching under Movies.
It took about a month, but we did it. Now that I have watched all of the Star Trek movies, I can call myself a Trekker. I heard that they do not like to be called Trekkies, by the way.
Brian made me watch the first few, but I willingly watched the rest. We watched all of the movies in sequence. Well, except for the First Contact and Insurrection which we inadvertently watched in the incorrect order. It wasn’t of serious consequence though, because unlike the first six films, the movies with Captain Picard in them were all stand alone movies and didn’t have to be watched in strict order. The ones with Captain/Admiral Kirk in them, however, had to be watched in sequence in order to make sense. Otherwise, you just had a lot of questions like “How did they end up in a Klingon Bird of Prey in The Voyage Home?” Those sorts of questions.
Anyway, here are the movies listed in the correct order (spoilers alert):
- Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
This is where the Starship Enterprise has its encounter with V’Ger, an evolved entity searching for its Creator. The film poses the questions of purpose. Why am I here? What is my purpose for being? Some heavy stuff. - Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
This is where Ricardo Montalban shines as Khan, a genetically engineered human who survived the Eugenics Wars. After being exiled in Ceti Alpha V for several years, he is extremely pissed and now wants to kill Kirk. - Star Trek: The Search for Spock (1984)
Spock dies in the previous movie, but isn’t actually dead. In this movie, Kirk and his loyal crew steal the Starship Enterprise to return to Genesis and rescue Spock. Kirk spars with Klingons and steals their Bird of Prey. Enterprise is blown to bits. Kirk and his crew use the Klingon ship to travel to Vulcan to put Spock back together. - Star Trek: The Voyage Home (1986)
A mysterious alien power threatens Earth by evaporating the oceans and destroying the atmosphere. Humpback whales, extinct in the 23rd century, are the only beings able to communicate with the alien probe. Kirk and his crew go back in time to retrieve a couple of humpback whales from the past, bring them back to the present and save the planet. Mr. Scott is really funny in this one. - Star Trek: The Final Frontier (1989)
This is where Sybok, who also happens to be Spock’s exiled half brother, and his rag-tag army of followers capture the Starship Enterprise in order to travel to the center of the Galaxy in search of the Supreme Being. This is one of my least favorite in the series. It was a little weird and I just didn’t get it. I may need to watch it again. - Star Trek: Generations (1994)
This may have been the pivotal, “passing of the baton” film but, I have to say, is my least favorite Star Trek film of all. It had several moments I found boring. Plus, the whole rift thing was a little weird for me. Shatner’s cheesy overacting was glaringly obvious next to Stewart’s good acting. Although, Brian says they made Picard look like a wimp. A terrible injustice to perhaps the best leader the Federation has ever known. Also, I expected better action and better effects from a movie released in 1994. The movie could have been better. - Star Trek: First Contact (1996)
A good recovery after Generations. Lots of great action. This is where Picard and his crew prevent the Borg from assimilating Earth and also ensure that First Contact, a significant historical event, takes place. - Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
Picard finds himself disobeying Starfleet and going against the Prime Directive in order to save the peaceful Baku from the Sona, who turn out to be their own progeny. The Sona devised an elaborate plan to relocate the Baku to another planet and take over the Baku’s planet in order to reap its regenerative properties. Picard and his crew restore peace and reunite the Baku and Sona people. - Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
This is my favorite out of the four movies with the Next Generation crew. Good plot twists. Lots of tricks. The actor who played praetor Shinzon did a great job as Picard’s clone/nemesis. Loved the part where the Enterprise rams into the Warbird, taking Shinzon and his crew completely by surprise. Picard and his crew successfully prevent Shinzon from annihilating earth. This significant event paves the way for cooperation between humans and Romulans.
So there you have it. Having seen the J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movie of 2009 before taking on watching all the other Star Trek movies in sequence, we are now officially caught up. Can’t wait for the next one!

Mr. Scott With Computer

This is my favorite scene from Star Trek: The Voyage Home. Mr. Scott is so funny. Another funny scene occurs right at the beginning of the movie.
CAPT. KIRK: How long to re-fit?
MR. SCOTT: Eight weeks. But you don’t have eight weeks, so I’ll do it for you in two.
CAPT. KIRK: Do you always multiply your repair estimates by a factor of four?
MR. SCOTT: How else to maintain my reputation as a miracle worker?
CAPT. KIRK: Your reputation is safe with me.
It cracked me up because it is so Brian. I think Brian took pointers from Mr. Scott. He does this sort of thing — overestimating completion time frames — at work all the time. Sorry I outed you, babe. =P

3 Down, 8 More to Go
Posted on June 12, 2009 by Ching under Movies, Wishlist.
Brian has made it his mission in life to make me watch all 11 (I’m counting the new one by J.J. Abrams also) Star Trek movies in sequence. We watched the prequel on opening weekend with Chad, Jan, David and Donna. That has inspired us to put the other 10 Star Trek movies on our Netflix.
So far we have watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. I liked the former because of its philosophical nature, but the latter was far more entertaining. The latter had better effects, too. Still hokey, but far less hokier than its predecessor. I also thought Ricardo Montalban did a great job as Khan.
I think what I liked most about Wrath of Khan is because I now understand some of the references they used in the new movie, particularly the references to the “Kobayashi Maru” simulation. I love the continuity of the Star Trek movies. It seems like, no matter when the movies are made/released, the movies all fit together nicely like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
I didn’t want to watch all of these Star Trek movies at first. I thought they would be boring. Two movies into it, though, I find myself lost in the Star Trek universe. Now I understand why Trekkies are so into them. It makes me want to relive the whole Star Trek Experience all over again.

Gotta Love Netflix
Posted on June 6, 2009 by Ching under Movies.
Revolutionary Road arrived in the mail today. That was the movie that mom and I were going to see one day, but we opted to see The Reader
(another Kate Winslet flick — she’s just so prolific). Anyway, I’m so glad we have Netflix
. I would have completely forgotten about the movie if I hadn’t previously added it to my queue. Speaking of movies, if you haven’t already seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
you should. It is a great movie. It made me cry and is now on my list of favorite sappy movies. =P
