Buyer’s Remorse

Posted on July 31, 2010 by under Life, Shopping.

dressI woke up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night on Thursday (Friday morning). I think it was a case of buyer’s remorse.

Brian and Jen (Teves) and I went to Black House White Market on Thursday night to look for a dress for me to wear to Carmen’s wedding. The sales rep was so nice. She picked out several dresses for me to try on. She even grabbed a couple of necklaces, a pair of spike-heeled shoes, and a belt to help me accessorize. She put all the stuff in the dressing room, changed some of the dresses for the correct size (I have to wear a larger size in WHBM; I think it might be dresses in general), helped me in and out of them, and was just all around helpful. She made me feel a bit like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. After all her trouble, I couldn’t bare to walk away without buying anything.

I liked all of the dresses that I tried on. Correction. I loved all of the dresses that I tried on. I could only get one due to my limited budget. I got the dress pictured above. Brian tried to rationalize the purchase by saying that the dress looked fantastic on me and that he thought that it actually cost more because of how great it looked. He felt it was a bargain at $180. LOL.

I can usually count on Brian to be the voice of reason. I wished that shopping that night would have gone something like this:

“I like this one.”

“How much is it?”

“It’ll probably be around $180 with tax.”

“That’s too much, baby.”

“Okay. I will just wait for it to go on sale then.”

I was counting on Brian to pull the breaks, but I think that the normal Brian took a vacation or something and an impostor took his place. Shopping totally did not go as I expected. I think I want the pragmatic Brian back.

“Why didn’t you stop me?” I asked Brian the next day.

“It looked good on you and you wanted it.”

“But it was a lot!”

“You’ve spent that much on a dress before.”

“Yes, but it’s been YEARS!”

I was really awful in our credit card days. Not quite as bad as the girl in Confessions of a Shopaholic, but pretty close. It’s funny how when I didn’t have any money, I just charged stuff that I wanted but couldn’t really afford without any care or remorse. Now that I have some extra money, I don’t want to spend it. LOL. Brian and I have been really frugal ever since we got rid of all of our credit cards. We decided we never want to be in debt ever again.

The dress purchase, even though I really like it and Brian thinks it looks great, was a departure from our frugal ways and quite frankly a little frivolous. I’m going to need to work harder at resisting temptation in the future. Remind me to stay away from WHBM for a while. =P

Here are some of the dresses that I’d worn to weddings in years past.

Sheila's Wedding

Divina's Wedding

Emma's Wedding

I’m sure there are tons of other pictures, but I’m too lazy to sort through the 30,000 in my Flickr photostream. I’m going to have to label these pictures better in the future.

P.S. I thought I could get more mileage out of the WHBM dress by wearing it to all three weddings that I have to attend in the coming months. Mom who is a major clotheshorse said that would be a bad idea because then I wouldn’t be able to tell whose wedding it was by looking at old pictures. When I was looking through my pictures online, I realized that she had a point. The only reason I knew which weddings were which was because I remembered the dress that I wore (see pictures above). Right then I thought, I need to go buy two more dresses! Thankfully pragmatic Brian was back from his vacation and told me to wear the same dress (there’ll be a different group of people at each wedding so it’s not like they’ll notice I wore the same dress more than once — not that there’s anything wrong with that) and just make sure I label the pictures. Voila! I’ll know whose wedding it was without having to rely on what I wore. Sounds good to me!

Awww… I did not know you had buyer’s remorse!!!! 🙁
$180 would NOT put you in debt! Think about it in pesos, it’s not even P10k and it’s from WHBM. As long as you do not do it everyday you’d be fine.

I think I know why the practical Brian went on vacation – because the impractical Jen was around! hehehe
