My Leadership Statement

Alright, I stole that one from Travis. Here’s my real one:
“I am a leader who empowers those around me to make choices and to learn and grow from these. I am leader who is compassionate, fair, supportive, trustworthy, and accountable. I am a leader who inspires others to be their best.”
And now that I have shared it here, I will have to live up to this.

Push Preview

Brian and I won’t be watching a lot of movies this year. We just did a budget and things are going to be really, really tight for a while until we can recover from our $7K plumbing nightmare [donations welcome].
We can’t cut out movies altogether, though. I can live without watching movies and save my $10 box office admission. Brian, however, is too much of a movie buff to make that sacrifice. So we have agreed to compromise and watch only one movie per month [although I have a feeling that we will be breaking this rule once the summer blockbusters come out]. At least, that is what we have agreed on for now. I can get discounted movie passes from work so it won’t be too bad. No more balcony movies for us, though. Bummer.
Anyway, we have both been looking forward to Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans so that’s our movie for the month of January. I believe Push will be our movie for February. This means that we’ll have to wait for both Confessions of a Shopaholic and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li to be released on Netflix. 🙁

Finished in 3rd Place on Friday

Did I mention already that Sunny and I both made the final table on Friday evening? That makes three final tables in a row for me.
Last Friday I made the final table but finished shy of the money. They only pay the top five places now, as opposed to top eight at the old place, so making the final table is no guarantee that you will win anything. Sunny managed to talk us into playing again the next day. I made final table again. This time I placed in the money. Then again the other night. I’m in a bit of a mini rush right now in terms of poker. Maybe it is supposed to counter balance all the rotten luck I’m having in real life? [ We are now looking at re-plumbing the entire house in lieu of drilling holes in our slab foundation to the tune of $7K. I think I should be playing the lottery rather than playing poker. ]
Anyway, I started doing better about the same time that all the weirdness started at Highlands. I think the weirdness of the Blue Collar Poker Tournaments, despite my complaints, is actually working out to my advantage. I guess I should stop complaining about the weirdness and just start enjoying it.
Incidentally, I think I’ve figured out what to attribute all the weirdness to… Highlands is gaining more and more popularity with the local crowd so more and more new faces are coming to out play. I think all of the publicity is helping to bring people in. Joe Stumpe wrote about the “Barely Legal” card game Kandu in The Wichita Eagle on November 15, 2008 (page 1A). They were featured on KSN’s Business Beat in early December. They were mentioned again in the Eagle in December. Just recently they had a highly favorable review in the January 2009 issue of Splurge! magazine. I think this is just the beginning of more weirdness to come.

2008 Poker Cruise Photobook, Second Edition

Alright I caved. I just could not let three weeks worth of hard work go to waste. I converted my book to the small paperback photobook, though, so it wouldn’t be so expensive. It still cost quite a bit, but at least I got two books because of the buy-1-get-1-free offer. Check out the book below in all its glory…
I gave my extra book to Sunny to add to her growing collection of photobooks. She has been so awesome to Brian and me. I could not think of anyone more deserving of a copy of the coveted photobook.

Shoes are Easier to Find Homes For

Shoes are easier to find homes for… Cute little Yorkipoos? Not so much. We’ve been trying to find a home for Molly for the last year now. We thought we found a home for her several months ago with one of the groomers at PetSmart but, when we came over to see if her other two (much bigger) dogs would get along okay with Molly, one of the dogs bit her on the head. It wasn’t a playful bite either. It was one of those scary ones.
Actually, all seemed okay at first. The dogs were playing in the backyard and for the most part leaving Molly alone. One of the dogs was next to me and when Molly came to me, she just snapped. It was very, very weird. Like the dog had split personality or something. Molly whimpered and I found a reddish-pink scratch when I checked her head. The owner said that the other dog was just being over-protective of me. When Molly approached me, the other dog felt the need to defend. The other dog knew that she had done wrong because immediately after, she squeezed herself between my calves and tried to hide there. As if to say, “I’m sorry I tried to eat your little dog.”
Brian and I decided, despite how sweet the owner was and how well-meaning, this would not be the home for Molly unless we wanted her to be a chew toy for the other two dogs, which were easily six times her size. Months later, Molly is still with us and we are still searching for a new home for her. She is so tiny and sweet. We just don’t want her to get fed to some killer dogs. I have heard of that happening and it just really scares me.
Jenni came by yesterday to pick up these almost new, only worn once (if that) Steven by Steve Madden 4″ peep-toe pumps. I bought them and worn them out once, but they hurt my feet so I never wore them again. The bottoms are barely scuffed. I also gave her a 30-gallon trash bag full of 32A bras that I can no longer wear. These were from back in our credit card hey day, when I could spend $50 on a bra and not think anything of it. If only I would have saved that money, we could have paid for re-plumbing the house in cash. If only…
But I digress… Though the pumps are very cute, they’re not as cute as Molly; so it’s very sad that their re-homing was so much more easier to achieve. I guess you don’t have to feed and groom the shoes.
Anyway, maybe Jenni felt so grateful for the almost new shoes that match her clutch and will work fabulously with an outfit she plans to wear on a trip to Memphis that she told us she would help us find a good home for Molly. I hope that she is really serious and I hope she succeeds.
