Cada Wins the WSOP Main Event

Posted on November 15, 2009 by under Life.

We watched the WSOP final table with Jay and Becca on Tuesday night. Of course, all of us — with the exception of Jay — already knew who won because of all the news and blog coverage. Jay didn’t want to know, though, because he wanted to enjoy the show.

He purposely avoided Yahoo! and the internet blogs and even our Facebook because he knew that we’d be talking about it and spoil the fun. Jay was really disappointed when Phil Ivey got knocked out. I was disappointed too, but not as disappointed as when I read about it on Pauly’s blog. I knew what was coming so I was prepared for it, at least.

To ESPN’s credit, they made Phil Ivey last an hour and half into the show. I’m sure they knew that everyone was rooting for Phil to take it down this year. The enthusiasm and energy level just wasn’t the same after he was out.

It was so funny watching him writhe and grown and flop all over the floor. When it was down to the final two, he was totally rooting for Moon. Jay continued to wince and whine and say comments like “I hate Cada. I hope he doesn’t win.” I didn’t say anything. LOL.

Despite Jay’s protestations, he couldn’t change what had already taken place. Cada won. I’d actually read quite a bit about Cada in the poker blogs. I’m glad he won. I was rooting for him because I wanted to see a new record set.

We had a blast at Jay and Becca’s on Tuesday night. I even had fun creating a Mii, even though it told me I was overweight. Of course, I already knew this. Brian is overweight, too, so at least I’m not alone. LOL. He carries the weight so much better than I do, though. He doesn’t even look fat to me. Men have it so much easier.

Anyway, Brian and I restarted our gym membership yesterday (thus, the Twitter posts you saw if you follow us; you might have seen the updates on Facebook also because Twitter updates my Facebook status automatically). I think we are going to get really serious about losing weight this time.

P.S. Besides being overweight, apparently my physical age is 57. LOL. I have my work cut out for me.

Family Celebration at Legends

Posted on November 15, 2009 by under Family.

I can’t believe I forgot to post the pictures we took a couple of weeks ago when we were at Legends at the Airport Hilton celebrating my birthday, Grandpa Clark’s birthday, and Grandma and Grandpa Brubaker’s wedding anniversary.

Grandma and Grandpa Brubaker’s wedding anniversary actually falls on the same day as Grandpa Clark’s birthday, which is on October 12 (Columbus Day is how I remember it – LOL). It works out because Grandpa will never forget their wedding anniversary, since it’s the same day as his birthday. Grandma is clever like that. LOL.

My birthday is on the 30th, the day before Halloween. Since these dates are pretty close together, we always celebrate together. This year, however, we couldn’t celebrate until November 1 because mom, dad, Brian and I were in the Philippines for the first part of October and then I’d been in and out of town for work as soon as we had arrived back. Weekends involved coming in to the office to review and approve time tickets and packing for the next trip.

Instead of putting it off longer, which will run into Thanksgiving, Brian and I managed to find a small window on November 1. The date worked for everyone so were able to get together for brunch.

Here are some of the pictures from that day:

More Photos from Plantation Bay

This is a photo of Brian and I at Savannah, taken during our first lunch at Plantation Bay. We had just arrived and dropped our stuff off at our room. Notice that we were still wearing our welcome leis. The best welcome leis ever! These are made of shells so they don’t wilt.

Here’s the lei up close.

These are what the lagoon-side rooms look like… They charge a premium for these rooms because you’re right on the water. You just step off your patio and you’re there.

One of the benefits of the man-made lagoon is that you don’t have to worry about stepping on sea urchins or other critters. Also, the lagoon is drained at least once a week and the floors are scrubbed clean. We saw this first hand one night while we were there. They do it in the evening when the lagoon is not in use so as not to inconvenience resort guests.

It was the freshest pineapple juice either of us had ever had. It even had bits of fruit in it. Brian didn’t like it as much because of that so he gave it to me. He prefers not-so-fresh pineapple juice, I guess. I loved it. It was delicious. Way better than any pineapple juice I had ever had!

Brian and I went biking around the property one afternoon.

We also did some exploring. The property is huge.

We all had a fantastic time at Plantation Bay. From check in to check out (with the exception of the time when we had an afternoon snack at Kilimanjaro and the server and hostess were inattentive) everyone was just amazing. All of the staff were friendly and helpful.

Even the pool guy who was cleaning the leaves off the water features at Mogambo stopped to help us with our bags when he saw us carrying our bags. He took our bags from us and carried them the rest of the way to the lobby area and then phoned the front desk so they would have a cart come pick us up.

Despite our desire to carry our own bags, we never had to do that the entire time we were there. Either the cart driver or one of the other staff would always beat us to it. Service was just out of this world. It was a pleasant surprise because there is no tipping at Plantation Bay.

We didn’t take advantage of the butler service because Brian and I prefer to fend for ourselves, but I read in the resort brochure that they do packing and unpacking for you, as well as shoe shines and minor sewing/clothing repair. We enjoyed our stay at Plantation Bay so much that we are already planning our next stay. I think we all agree that we will stay more days next time. 🙂

P.S. You can see more pictures here.
