Getting Stranded in Vegas

This is Brian’s worried look (after we realized that our flight to Denver was grounded and that we would miss our connection to Wichita). The plane that we were supposed to board to go to Denver arrived with a flat tire so it couldn’t go anywhere. Anyway, there was only one mechanic on New Year’s Day and he was already tied up fixing a plane with a hydraulic leak. They tried to page the “on call” mechanic to no avail so they finally had to fly a mechanic from Denver. By then, a whole bunch of passengers (Brian and I being two of them) were going to be too late for their connecting flights.

It took almost as long to figure things out. Why? Because no one flies to Wichita. At this point, we were left with two options: get stranded in Denver or get stranded in Vegas. We decided to just stay in Vegas and come home the next day. Brian and I really wanted to be home by Sunday morning at the latest so that we could both do some work from home, but it was not to be. The only flights we could get didn’t get us home until late on Sunday night. We had to accept it, though. If we didn’t get out of Vegas on Sunday, it would have been January 4th before we could get out of there.

The next day we were back at McCarran for round 2. We found out that the mechanic did arrive and he got the flat tire replaced. The flight, which was supposed to leave at 3:33 pm on Saturday, didn’t leave until after 7:00 pm. Our connecting flight in Denver would have been long gone by the time it arrived. It was a crazy mess. Anyway, I’m just glad that we didn’t have to spend the night in Denver.

My New Favorite Boots

Posted on January 22, 2011 by under Travel, Wishlist.

Last year my Steve Madden cowboy boots were my favorite. This year, my Frye Harness 12Rs have taken their place. 🙂

These were perfect!

I wore them almost every single day on our trip.

P.S. I didn’t pay that much for mine.

Pretty cool vending machine at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. We don’t have anything like it here at Mid-Continent.

Our NYE in Vegas

After a delicious NYE dinner at Grotto, Brian and I spent the rest of the evening back and forth between Fremont Street and Gold Diggers. We spent some time in our room too, doing our NYE tradition.

Some people toast and kiss at the stroke of midnight, we do a little bit more. That’s our thing, though. That’s how we normally ring in the New Year. LOL.

This time since we were in Pacific time, we got to ring in the New Year twice. When it was midnight in Kansas, Brian and I did our traditional NYE celebration. Just the two of us. In private. When it was midnight in Vegas, we did our champagne toast and kisses at Gold Diggers. That was Brian’s idea.

I actually kind of like being able to celebrate twice. I specially like our NYE tradition. That’s one tradition I want to keep doing for years and years to come. 😉

Do We Look Alike?

It’s my biological father’s birthday today! Happy Birthday!

It’s a little weird because I’m not quite sure what to call him. I’ve only spent time with him twice in my entire life. Once in 1999. He sent me airline tickets to visit him and his family who were living in California at the time. And then New Year’s Eve 2010. They live in Las Vegas now, where they moved back in 2000 when they left California. They live about five minutes from The Strip.

Fredo seems like a cool, fun guy. I actually found out that we have a few things in common like we are both yungit (can’t say words with the letter “r” but I mostly only have this problem when I’m speaking Tagalog or Cebuano not so much in English, fortunately) and we both enjoy playing chess. My half brother Adel likes to play chess also and is pretty good at it.

Adel played against both me and Brian. He lost against me, but won against Brian. He initially wanted a rematch, but I was afraid I would lose the second time around so I had him play against Brian instead. 😉

Naturally, I lost when I played against Fredo. Adel said he is very good at chess, but I wanted to try anyway. We only played once so I’m looking forward to a rematch. I think if I play him a few more times I can take him. LOL.
