Hitting the Spring Fling with Mom

Posted on May 2, 2009 by under Flickr, Things to Do.

There wasn’t much to do at the Derby Spring Fling. It’s not a tenth the size of the Wichita Women’s Fair. Oh, well. We did run into our Statefarm insurance agent, Rael Hodgson, though. She has mom and dad’s house, cars and life insurance, as well as our house and cars.

The Fabulous Fleshtones at Dukes

Posted on April 26, 2009 by under Flickr.

IMG_4070The Fabulous Fleshtones pictured above (clockwise from top left): Herb, Doug, Mel, Larry, and Jim.

Brian and I went to Dukes Bar and Grill last night to watch The Fabulous Fleshtones (also known as The Family Band to close friends and family) perform. We got to listen to some of their new songs, and I must say they are living up to their moniker because they did sound fabulous.

During intermission I checked out the copy of Prospector Nightlife laying on the table and found the picture of them I edited on Picnik. Jim said that he brought those copies to show me the ad. I wish they had professional photos and I wish I had professional photo editing software and professional editing skills so that I could do more for them. The picture in Prospector Nightlife didn’t turn out too bad, though, all things considered.

I took a few photos last night (and some videos, which are posted on YouTube if you want to check them out). A slideshow is attached below. Enjoy!

Motorcycle Heaven

Posted on April 25, 2009 by under Flickr, Wishlist.

We spent this morning with Mom and Dad B. The plan was to meet up at Cracker Barrel for brunch and then going to Alef’s to check out motorcycles. David wanted to test drive a Buell that they had out there.

Brian and I arrived at Cracker Barrel a little early, so we decided to play a game of checkers while we waited. Needless to say, I kicked his butt.

Brian doesn’t take to losing too well. Not at poker; not at chess; not at checkers; not at anything, really. Mom and Dad B arrived just as we were finishing our game.

Alef’s was fun. It’s like motorcycle heaven. I’d never been there before. All the motorcycles looked awesome. Brian and I fell in love with a Harley-Davidson Iron 883 Sportster with a very nice black on black frame and satin finish. Normally Brian likes shiny stuff, but he doesn’t like shiny chrome on motorcycles because he says it will drive him crazy. He thinks he will spend more time wiping fingerprints off than riding the thing. Thus, his inclination toward the blacked out Iron.

This is a different bike than the one that we liked, but I wanted to show you a picture of Brian on a motorcycle. Brian looks great on a bike, no? He ain’t getting one, though.

Sorry, baby! =P

Pictures from Jay’s Birthday

Posted on April 21, 2009 by under Flickr.

We celebrated Jay’s 30th birthday at Fox and Hound on Sunday. I was worried that Brian wouldn’t be able to make it because he has been busy with National Sales Meeting this week. Luckily, he managed to find a way to attend. We had a great time.

Some Photo Highlights from Yesterday

Posted on April 12, 2009 by under Flickr, Things to Do.

IMG_3725
We found out that the pavilion was named after Westar Energy because the Green Team (and most specially Steve Vaughn) helped build the flight pen for the bald eagles, the restrooms, and the pavilion itself.

Ken Lockwood (above) is the program director of the Eagle Valley Raptor Center.

IMG_3744
Ken with Herman Munster, their turkey vulture.

IMG_3761
Ken with Sierra, their red-tailed hawk.

IMG_3779
This is Turnpike, their American kestrel.

This is a video of Turnpike flying to Ken and his food.

IMG_3793
Brian, in the screech owl pen. The screech owls were our favorite.

IMG_3803
Screech owls Twister and Tidbit. Aren’t they the cutest?

IMG_3809
Everyone taking pictures of the screech owls.

IMG_3826
Annie, their barred owl. She is surrogate mom to two baby owls. KAKE News did a news report of Annie’s introduction to the orphaned owls. Check out the video here.

IMG_3838
Miley Cyrus, their barn owl (also known as monkey-faced owl), is beautiful. Besides having the opportunity to photograph her outside of the pen, we also got a chance to touch his soft feathers.

IMG_3847
Jan, petting Miley Cyrus. Her feathers are very, very soft.

IMG_3865
Ken with Kili, a peregrine falcon that was recently taken to the Raptor Center by a hunter. The peregrine falcon clipped its wing on a power line.

IMG_3873
These are the great horned owls that were orphaned during the ice storm. Believe it or not, these are babies. Ken said they eat like pigs because they are growing. It costs him almost $40 a day just to feed these baby owls. Great horned owls grow to be pretty large. They are not at all tiny and cute like the screech owls. As soon as the babies are mature enough to hunt prey on their own, they will be released.

This is a mature great horned owl named Templeton.

Brian says the eagle’s nest display was an easy ten feet in diameter.

Tundra, their snowy owl.

Ken, speaking to our group in front of Tundra’s flight pen.

IMG_3904
Ken inside the golden eagle’s flight pen. The golden eagle’s name is Talon.

IMG_3947
WaSu, a bald eagle, was taken to the Raptor Center after being shot in the wing.

IMG_3932
This is a picture of Cessna, a female bald eagle. In birds the females are typically larger than the males of their species. Cessna is much, much larger than WaSu.

IMG_3942
Inside the bald eagles’ flight pen, Brian observes while Jan is feverishly snapping pictures in the background. I think she was able to capture some amazing photos with her fancy camera. I can’t wait to see them.

Anyway, these are the highlights of yesterday’s day trip to Eagle Valley Raptor Center. If you guys have never been out there, it is definitely worth the drive. The tours are by appointment only so please be sure to call ahead of time.
