Time to Buy Some Goggles
Posted on December 8, 2009 by Ching under Health.
This is how Brian’s eye looked after he had a run-in with the power of Bruce.
Brian half-crying, half-laughing, with an ice-pack to his eye.
We were all really worried about Brian. One of the YMCA reps actually filed an incident report. I was wondering if I needed to take him to the hospital or at the very least maybe convince him to stay home tomorrow. He said he was fine, though.
He was like, “My boss got hit in the eye with a hockey puck and showed up to work the next day. If I tell him I’m not able to show up to work because I got hit in the eye with a racquetball, he’s going to call me a wuss.” Good point. No one wants to seem like a wuss. No one I know, anyway.
Brian hit my head with the racket on Sunday and I was too proud to admit that it bothered me. I wanted to keep playing and so we did. We finished three games. It was Monday night before I even admitted to Brian that my head still hurts. The bump is still there and tender to the touch.
I’m just thankful that it was Brian who hit my head and not Jay. I think that if Jay did it, Bruce would have done quite a number on me and my head might have needed some stitches.
I think Brian’s eye will be fine. It looked horrible at first, but it’s not so red anymore. I was afraid he’d have a black eye tomorrow, but I don’t think it will even be that bad. Definitely going to stop and buy some racquetball goggles before we play racquetball again, though.

Getting a Workout
Posted on December 6, 2009 by Ching under Health, Life.
I played racquetball with Ronnie, April and Jay yesterday. Brian had an appointment at Tracy’s Automotive so he dropped me off at the gym at 8:30 AM. Since I was there so early, I went ahead and did 30 minutes of the group fitness class before mine. The group fitness class I like is the All Tapped out step class from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.
We had the racquetball court reserved for three hours. Yes, we are court hogs. =P
Almost halfway through my step class, I thought I would step out (no pun intended) and see who was in the racquetball court. I guess Ronnie and April were running late because Jay was in there by himself playing with Bruce. Yes, he named his racquetball racket. Our friends are weird. Well, maybe just Jay.
I felt bad so I told him that I would grab my stuff from the studio and play with him instead. Ronnie and April showed up before we could finish an entire match. We played doubles instead.
Brian was hoping that he would be done with Tracy’s by 11:00 AM, so that he could play racquetball with us. No such luck. While I was getting a workout, Tracy’s was giving our credit card a workout to the tune of $650. You go in for one thing and you come out spending almost double. That’s pretty much how our luck goes.
Brian feels he got a good deal, though. We got four new tires (with free Nitrogen and free tire rotation for the life of the tires), new brake pads, and an oil change for $650. That’s not too bad, I guess. It could have been worse.
The sad thing is that we just paid our credit card bill (we zero it out each month so we don’t have to pay interest/finance charges) and I think there’s another $1000 in there right now (maybe more; we have been shopping a lot lately). We won’t have another paycheck coming in for another week at least. Did I mention that spending money is my least favorite part of the holidays? Spoken like a true Asian, right? Stereotypes aside, sometimes Brian is worse than I am. We are a couple of frugalistas. LOL.
Jay and I played racquetball until noon. Since Brian was still waiting for the Crichton to get done, Jay just dropped me off at Tracy’s. Thanks, Jay!
Since we were already downtown, Brian and I decided to have lunch at Caffe Moderne. They have the best sandwiches! Probably not the best for you diet-wise, but it’s delicious. I love their honey vinaigrette salad dressing also. Brian was proud of the fact that I resisted the slice triple chocolate bundt cake that was calling my name from the dessert display case. I really wanted it, too. Ugh.
Brian wanted to go home and nap before we went to the holiday party that evening in Hutch. I generally don’t like napping right after eating, but I was fighting the urge to stay awake. I think it’s because I stayed up late on Friday night and woke up at 7:00 AM on Saturday morning. Brian and I napped until 3:00 PM. Brian wanted to nap longer than an hour and a half, but we had to make it to Hutch by 5:30 PM and we still needed to get gas and cash.
Saturday was a full eventful day overall. I wasn’t too happy about napping after lunch because I can just imagine all those food calories being stored as fat as I slept. At least, I skipped the chocolate cake. I just try to remind myself of that so I don’t get too upset. LOL.
I felt bad because Brian had to spend his entire morning at Tracy’s and didn’t get to play racquetball with us. We are playing racquetball together today before my workout class, though. Let’s see if I can beat him this time.

Tanlines Fade but Pictures are Forever
Posted on August 22, 2009 by Ching under Health.
Well, at least that’s true for digital pictures anyway. Unless your hard-drive crashes.. which is why I store all my pictures on Flickr.
Anyhow, this tanline (which makes it look like I’m wearing thigh-high socks) was the result of spending all day at the Midwest Rockfest last Saturday. It was more pronounced (and more red) a few days back. Apparently, brown (or yellow) people like me burn too if out in the sun for too long. I always thought being immune to the Kansas sun was one of the perks of being exotic. After last Saturday, I discovered the limits of my immunity: about 4 hours.
Brian had insisted on putting sunblock on. I helped him apply some on his body, but I was stubborn and refused to put some on myself. I’d never burned before. I usually just get darker after a considerable amount of time under the sun. I figured I could do without sunblock, specially since I wanted to get darker anyway.
Later that evening, even though the temperature had cooled down a lot, my skin still felt hot. It wasn’t as hot as it was in the afternoon when it felt like you could fry an egg on me, but my skin still felt really hot. When we got home, we slathered some blue aloe gel stuff on me to cool me down. The next day, however, my skin was still red and warm to the touch. The telltale signs of being sunburnt.
By Monday, my skin had turned from red to brown. I skipped the whole peeling phase. At least, that was nice. I hate it when your skin starts peeling after a sunburn because you inevitably leave skin flakes everywhere you go.
Anyway, I learned an important lesson last weekend. I learned that just like normal people, I will burn too if out in the sun for too long. I just have a higher threshold than others. Brian can last about 15 to 30 minutes, while I could go up to 4 hours. After that, though, there better be sunblock around otherwise I’ll be red for a couple of days. I know now not to push the limits of my sun immunity.

Mom Has a Healthier Spine Than I Do
Posted on May 4, 2009 by Ching under Health.
We had these scans done at the Spring Fling in Derby the other day. Believe it or not, mom has a healthier spine than I do. I supposedly need some kind of adjustment. That’s what 15 years of doing sedentary work gets you. 🙁
