Brian’s Accomplishment

Posted on May 25, 2003 by under Life, Web.

I think Brian would appreciate it if I blogged about his most recent accomplishment: getting our home network and our Webcam32 programs working again.  It’s a wonderful day when you get something that hasn’t been working in several months working again.  Such a feeling of satisfaction he had that he just had to blog about it and you know he hardly every blogs.  It’s been months since he’s blogged also but bragging about how he figured out what was wrong with our computers was such an astounding accomplishment that he felt it warranted some blogging.  LOL!

Kidding aside, I really appreciate it.  I mean, I was totally ticked when Webcam32 quit FTPing..  Now it works again.  And I’m so happy that we can now share the printer and share our files without having to burn them to disk or email them to one another.  I love having our computers networked!

When he told me what it was though (it was just the stupid ICF thing all along), I felt so retarded.  It was truly one of those moments.  I mean, we suffered without a home network for how long?  Just because of what?  That?

By the way, what’s up with the recent trend of celebrity weblogs and journals?  I’ve got a sampling here for you, for your enjoyment.

I must say, though, that Wil Wheaton was one of the first.  I think he even won a Webby one year..

Of course, there are many more out there so feel free to do your own celebrity blog-hunting.  But before you go anywhere with your mouse, I recommend stopping by Shift.com‘s list because they’ve got some entertaining commentary.

Spybot Search & Destroy

Posted on April 1, 2003 by under Web.

I recently read this article about spyware in PC Mag so I downloaded Spybot Search & Destroy which is the editor’s pick among all the spyward detectors and removers reviewed.  Brian and I both ran the program and exterminated all the bugs from both of our computers.  As with everything I do, I kind of got a little carried away so I increased the security level on my browser to maximum to prevent “drive-by downloads” and unauthorized scripts from running.  I am such a moron!  Let me tell you!  Pia and I were dicking with her new forum last night and I could not freaking login.  It was only until after I couldn’t login to Blogger also that I figured out the problem.  My maximum-security privacy settings were prohibiting the sites from using cookies to authenticate my identity.  Needless to say I’m back to medium security on everything but at least everything is functional again.  More grrr!

New Domains

Posted on March 30, 2003 by under Family, Web.

Congrats to my friend Pia for purchasing her first ever domain!  Pia can be found at SugarcoatedandBittersweet.com but I don’t think the DNS has propagated yet.

Speaking of new domains, I gave dad his present over brunch today.  Mom and dad treated Brian and I to brunch at Picadilly to celebrate dad’s birthday.  It’s a little early but he won’t be in town on April 11, his birthday weekend, so we didn’t have a choice.  Brian and I spent the afternoon at their house where Brian napped while I showed dad how to work the albums section.  I also hooked up their webcam, which dad was pretty excited about.  I think he’s looking forward to checking up on mom and Logan while he’s in Houston.  He loves the idea of having a webcam on the site.

Anyhow, in other news — Golden Sushi has turned into a bit of a webzine.  I’m not finished uploading all of the articles yet but I’m really getting excited about all the possibilities.  That’s all the net-type news I’ve got for you.  Back to work again tomorrow.  Grrr!

Web Sightings

Posted on March 1, 2003 by under Web.

Sometimes when I get bored I google (and may Google not sue me for desecrating their trademark by using it as a verb). So I was googling Brian a few days back and found a whole bunch of interesting stuff. I found the article about the other Brian Brubaker — the one who also happens to be an artist and won the “Design the Shocker Logo” contest last year. Brian heard about it for several weeks!

“Hey, great job on the Shocker logo!”

“Are you the guy who designed the Shocker logo?”

It went on and on. While Brian isn’t THAT guy, my Brian does have his share of internet sightings. I was actually suprised! Here’s a picture from 1995 (or so Brian thinks but his memory is fuzzy) that I found via the Kansas Aviation Museum website.

 a Brian sighting

Brian is the guy on the right — this was when he still had longish hair (but not as long as it was when when first met). The man on the left is Brian’s father David. Man, talk about sightings! The man is everywhere! Of course it helps to be involved in a lot organizations (namely KAM and MKMVPA). Anyway, I just thought I’d share this with you all. Brian is home from work now so I’m going to sign off. Until next time..

Online Auctions

Posted on February 19, 2003 by under Web.

I summoned all the courage that I had and ventured (albeit rather timidly) into the world of online auctions.  I’ve never even bought anything from an auction before but a couple of my friends, namely Sarah (experienced buyer) and Lindsey (experienced seller), practically live on eBay.  Lindsey has only positive things to say: mostly how it has improved her cashflow and such.  Sarah, who represents the other side, has experienced both ups and downs.  You get good deals and you get ripped off too.  It’s a fact of auctioning life that buyers just have to accept.  Needless to say, I know enough to proceed with caution.  Right now I’m making baby steps. While I know that it may take years before I start bidding on stuff online, I recently posted my very first auction.  I figured that less risk is associated with selling.  I minimized the risk even more by reviewing and comparing almost every detail of eBay auctions versus Yahoo! auctions (mostly comparing the fees) until I finally decided to start with the latter.  I don’t think there is as much action on Yahoo! than eBay but, then again, I’ve got very limited experience in this area.  Anyway, I figured if I have a good experience with my first auction I may just sell everything in our house (I’m exaggerating, of course). Lindsey tells me that whenever she gets bored or is broke she just goes through her closet and starts listing stuff.  From what she tells me, the revenue it generates is pretty good.  My cash flow (or lack thereof) needs all the help it can get right about now so I went ahead and gave it a try.  Of course, I’m super-eager and I just have to check my (one and only) auction every single day.  Anyway, everytime I check my auction my enthusiasm is constantly met by disappointment because I’ve only got six days to go and I still have no bids! Sarah tells me that it’s normal.  She says that people usually don’t bid until the auction is almost over but you know what– I don’t think I have any page views either!  I feel like crying.
