The Best Day Ever

Posted on May 12, 2007 by under Flickr, Poker, School.

Time to Celebrate!

Friday, May 11, proved to be the best day ever! Craft posted the grades for our Friendly Cards case study as well as our final exam scores. We got another great score on our last case and I got a 98% on the final so that gave me an A for the class. Last semester I took four classes and ended up with three A’s and a B (in DS also known as Operations Management). The work load was just too much for me to handle.

This semester I took Brian’s advice and dropped to three classes. He was so right. Three classes is just enough course load so that I can meet my target graduation date and maintain good grades. Taking four graduate level courses in one semester was a crazy idea.

My Finance grade was the last one I was waiting for — all A’s this sem! Go me! And, for the first time in a really long time, I don’t have finals during Riverfest week; which means Brian and I can actually participate in some of the week’s festivities. So far I have talked him into attending the swing dance/concert with me and also going to the Botanica on Friday afternoon. 🙂

Besides the good news I received about my grades, I also did great at poker last night. Last night was the first Friday night Blue Collar Poker Tour event at APL. I was short-stacked the whole way but luck was on my side (must be the good mojo from the great news I received earlier in the day) because I managed to finish 2nd.

The tourney started at seven in the evening and we didn’t finish until well after midnight. That was a long time to play poker. I think I might’ve had a shot to win the big one but my opponent had my stack covered 3-to-1 so I couldn’t make a move. When it was time for heads up play, I couldn’t catch cards to save my life. The one time that I had him out-kicked our kickers didn’t play so we had to split the pot. I was totally worn out and finally just gave up. Went all in on a stupid hand just so the agony would be over, and Brian and I could finally go home and go to bed. That’s the main weakness I have when it comes to final table and heads up play — I don’t have endurance. I get bored. I get impatient. I do crazy things. And I get knocked out.

Taking home $100 for 2nd place wasn’t bad, though. Brian and I invested $20 to play ($10 each for chair rentals) and so that’s pretty good ROI when you think about it.

P.S. The Dill’s are in town for the week. We found out yesterday at poker because they were there. We wouldn’t have known otherwise because Dill changed his phone number. =P

We went to Becca’s graduation this morning. I’m really glad that we found out about it (although not until last night) and could be there to show our support. You can view the photos we took here.

Anyway, Friday was the best day I’ve had in a long time!

Mid-Kansas MVPA Web Site

Mid-Kansas MVPA

Sorry I have been out of commission lately. My free time has been spent working on the new MKMVPA club web site. It now looks cleaner and simpler. It is much easier to navigate also. I moved it to WordPress instead of Blogger and the layout is just a standard WordPress template so it is pretty low maintenance. I like the look overall. Brian is not too fond of it because the old web site was his design creation. So naturally he liked the old one better. I liked it as well but I think the members found it to confusing in terms of navigation. The color scheme was a little too dark for my taste also.

Of course, this is the most stressful time of the semester as well. We have several projects due and final exams are just around the corner. Work has been pretty hectic, too. Most days leave me completely exhausted. I’m actually supposed to be working on one of my many class projects right now but I thought I would check in since it has been a while.

I also wanted to take the time to wish both of our dads happy birthday. My dad’s birthday is tomorrow while Brian’s dad’s birthday is on Friday. We got both of them Ting Ting head massagers this year. We got a pretty good deal on them at Amazon. Brian has one too and loves it! You guys should try it. 🙂

Good News and Bad News

Posted on March 14, 2007 by under Life, News, School.

The good news is that I got a 98 on my Accounting exam. I think I only missed one multiple choice question. They were worth two points each. After a brief exam post mortem with Chad, I really thought I messed up on the second problem. He is very studious so I take his opinion very seriously. Anyway, it turns out I actually did it right. So I’m guessing I got everything right except for one multiple choice question. I think I know which question it is, too. There was one question that I couldn’t decide between two of the choices. I was confident about all my other answers, though. So I’m pretty sure it was the question that I was uncertain about.

It’s a relief to know that I actually did well on the exam. I didn’t think I was completely prepared for it, specially since Brian helped me procrastinate over the weekend. I guess I was more prepared than I realized.

Now for the bad news. Are you ready for this? Sanjaya is still on Idol, therefore we’ll be subjected to more of his pitiful performances. Thank God for DVR! So at least we can fast forward through the more horrific parts. But what is the deal?

I felt sure that he might survive this elimination because the majority of Idol viewers clearly have no taste. I was so convinced that yet another undeserving person would be sent home that for the first time in my entire Idol-viewing history I actually felt compelled to vote. I tried to call but the lines were busy. After a few tries I just gave up.

Either Sanjaya has a really big family or the show is rigged. Brian is now completely convinced of the latter. The results tonight actually make me think of the movie American Dreamz where the terrorist actually wanted their representative to win so that he could assassinate the president. Maybe Sanjaya has been sent to assassinate Simon Cowell. He’s probably made one too many people mad. I usually agree with his critiques, though. I don’t understand why people subject themselves to the contest and are upset when they get honest feedback. Simon is just telling it like it is. Maybe this is punishment for all of us Americans who watch too much TV. Now we have to endure more of Sanjaya. LOL.

Chicken Poop, Chocolate Goop, Hair Gels and Can’t Sells.

Posted on March 9, 2007 by under Life, School.

Last night my wife took me to a speaker panel for 4 of the most prominent entrepreneur’s in the city of Wichita. One was Craig Allen of “Craig Allen Salon’s” the other was the owner of “Coco Dulce” a chocolate boutique, the third was the Sister of the owner/creator of “Chicken Poop” lip balm and the last was a poor guy trying to get an over worked idea to work for him. Over all the speakers were very good and the information was interesting for those that were there to learn how to start your own business. I think most of the people that were there were only there to fulfill a class credit or something.

This poor guy that had the web idea (a social place like MySpace but for sports) was one of the people that i feel will not make it as far as getting his business off the ground. The whole MySpace thing is a done deal. It was nice when it was new and at the moment there are so many social sites available that one more is just a drop in the bucket. I felt for this guy because he says he works a full time job, comes home to his kids and then programs till 2 in the morning. I told my wife that he just needs to come up with something more origional. The “Craig Allen” guy is another that I think wont last past 5 years. This is a novel concept, a salon geared solely towards men, but its a changing world. Guys are no longer moving towards $55.00 haircuts, reguardless of the environment. He stated that he is looking to expand his business in other states. I told my wife, “He may be able to get this idea to last in like California, Dallas, New York or maybe even Florida. However, here in Wichita its not going to last, the people here are just to frugal. They will try a concept for a while but when the novelty wears off the business eventually fizzles out and dies”. I think the people that will be in business for a long time are the Chicken Poop people and the Chocolate person. These are 2 concepts that we dont currently have in Wichita. Chicken Poop has gone nationwide thanks to Walgreens and is running neck in neck with Burt’s Bees, another natural’s creator. I told my wife that this is an idea that will be around for a while. Create a product out of natural ingreadents, give it a catchy name and package it to appeal to the customers eye. They have done all of this and its paid off for them in major ways. The chocolate place it great because they are appealing to not only the upper middle class house wife, but the corperate person that is looking for that “Something Special” for there end customers, bosses, CEO’s or whatever that they are wanting. This is a great concept that will be around for a while.

All-in-all this was a great speech sessions and i was glad that my wife drug me too it. Originally i did not want to go  but i broke down (i can never tell my wife no, i may put up a good fight but in the end…i love her to much to deny her anything) and finally went. I took away some good knowledge if i wanted to start my own business and I think in the future if I do want to start my own business, i know who in town to turn to for advise.

Bad Karma

Posted on February 6, 2007 by under Flickr, Life, School.

Parking Ticket -- ARRGH!

Good people experience bad karma, too — especially when they make bad choices. Yes, friends. I got busted.

For a couple of semesters now I’ve been parking illegally on campus. At first I’d only do it only once in a while. Most of the time on game nights. With the advent of Wichita State men’s basketball’s recent winning streak the popularity of basketball has increased. More people attend the basketball games than ever before. Usually game nights are plagued with chaos and anarchy in the parking lot so parking illegally is often excusable. Well, it’s the least of the campus police’s worries. Besides, usually there’s no where else to park. Actually, during the last home game even the faculty lot that I got accustomed to parking in was full so I had to scavenge for a different parking spot.

Anyway, getting away with it only encouraged the bad behavior. It came to a point when I would park in my favorite lot even on regular nights just because it was so covenient. A utilitarian at heart, I rationalized the behavior by telling myself that the ends justified the means. Okay, so maybe in this situation I may have let the hedonist side of me win but hey, we can’t all be good one hundred per cent of the time. To me a shorter trek to class was worth the risk of getting busted (particularly with the temperatures as cold as they have been). Or so it seemed, when I was getting away with it.

I am not really an unethical person. On the contrary, I’m probably one of the most straight-laced people you will ever meet. I have a great respect for rules — except of course when they cause me to walk through a frozen tundra for ten minutes at ten o’clock in the evening.

Kidding aside, one of the guys in Accounting class actually made a really astute observation a couple of weeks ago. He said that unethical behavior has more to do with opportunity rather than one’s character. He said, given a situation in which it is relatively easy (or convenient, in my case) to behave unethically and there is a slim likelihood of getting caught, ethical and unethical individuals have about the same predisposition to behaving unethically. He further stated that research has shown that in these situations, ethical people are just as likely as the unethical people to commit an unethical act. So you see, even good people fall prey to compromising situations.

As for me, I’ve learned my lesson. No more parking in faculty lots no matter how cold it is. The ends may justify the means but, at $60 a pop, this poor girl doesn’t have the means to continue to pay for any more parking fines.
