The Donut Whole
Posted on July 30, 2012 by Ching under Food and Drink, Reviews.
I’d eaten donuts from the Donut Whole before, but I had never been until yesterday. It’s actually a cool, little place. And they have free wifi, which is a bonus.
We had the triple chocolate, chocolate crunch, chocolate malt, and maple bacon. They were all delicious in their own way. The maple bacon flavor was a little weird, though. It’s not bad, but I doubt I would get it again.
I got a yummy hot chocolate with whipped cream to go with my donuts.
Logan got a small hot chocolate with no whipped cream.
He hardly drank any of it, though.
Brian had coffee. He liked it even though it was different than the coffee that he’s used to at Scooter’s.
Here’s a photo of me biting into the maple bacon donut.
Logan and Brian.
Logan and me.
I really like the Donut Whole. Not only are their donuts delicious, but they have good hot chocolate. And they have quirky decorations. And free wifi. And it’s just a fun place to hang out. I would totally go back and try some of the other donut flavors. What do you guys think I should try next? Leave suggestions in the comments down below.

Flip and Ching Need a Spare Bedroom
Posted on July 30, 2012 by Ching under Family.
We are using our spare bedroom as an office right now, so we don’t actually have a bedroom for guests to use. When we had Logan (one of our nephews) this weekend, we had to convert the nap couch into a makeshift bed for him. Lucky for us, he hasn’t outgrown the length of the couch yet. I’m looking forward to moving though, so we can have a real guest bedroom for our nephews to use when they spend the night.

Ching Gets Good Karma
Posted on July 29, 2012 by Ching under Family, Food and Drink.
Brian and I were at MIF Deli again yesterday. Post-workout trips to MIF are starting to become a Saturday thing for us. We shouldn’t really be eating out, but it could be worse. We could be eating Super Sonic burgers with extra mayo after each workout. You think I’m joking, but it’s what I used to do after my workouts back in the day. You don’t get 36% body fat without trying. LOL. Okay, maybe I wasn’t really trying. I’m good at gaining weigh though, despite all the workouts. If gaining weight were an Olympic sport, I’d be a gold medalist.
Anyway, the combo platter with all grape leaves is a must for us every trip.
We ate too much last time, so this time we decided to just split a chicken gyro. The gyro portions at MIF are plenty to satisfy the appetites of two hungry adults who just finished working out. Of course, the appetizer we always share helps to fill us up too.
While we were eating our lunch, I overheard another couple tell the server how they didn’t like the stuffed grape leaves at Fresh Market. There must be something wrong with me because I felt compelled to butt in between bites of my gyro. I reassured them that the grape leaves at MIF are fantastic, pretty much single-handedly talking them into ordering it.
When we were done eating and it was time for us to pay, I couldn’t tell if they liked the grape leaves and felt bad that I pushed them toward ordering it so I asked the server to put their grape leaves on our check. Brian thought that was nice. I told him that people have been nice to us and so I felt like we should pay it forward. Plus, in the event they didn’t like the grape leaves (which I doubt because the grape leaves at MIF are fantastic, but just in case) at least they didn’t have to pay for it.
After lunch Brian and I went home for a quick shower before going to pick up Logan, who was to spend the weekend with us. On the way home from picking Logan up, Logan and I decided that we wanted something to drink. I suggested that we go to Sonic because I felt a strawberry limeade craving come on just at that moment. As we were about to turn the corner on 21st and Greenwich, I saw a couple of guys holding signs that read “FREE DRINKS AT SONIC 2-4 PM” and trying to get our attention. I smiled and waved back. What luck!
I wasn’t sure if limeades were included in the free drinks offer, but we gave it a try anyway. We figured that they would tell us how much we owed after we placed our order. Brian and Logan both got medium Cokes, while I got a medium strawberry limeade to satiate my craving.
“How much did they say?” I asked.
“They didn’t,” Brian replied.
“What did they say then?”
“It’ll be right up.”
“Hmm… That’s weird. I guess we’ll find out when they bring the drinks up.”
They didn’t charge us anything, but Brian gave the guy a couple of bucks. Not bad. Either “The Secret” is strong with me (I thought “I want a strawberry limeade” and the universe delivered) or it was my good karma coming back. Whatever the reason, I was happy. LOL.
If you missed out on the free drinks today, don’t fret. Epic Church is sponsoring free drinks again from 2 to 4 PM on the final Saturday of August (August 25). Brian isn’t a huge fan of Sonic food, but I actually like it so I’ll probably go back. It can’t be that bad if you limit it to once a month, right?

River City Brewery
Posted on July 29, 2012 by Brian under Food and Drink, Reviews.
Last week I was part of a company focus group to help us redesign and rebuild a system that we use. We brought in a few sales reps, a couple regional managers and a director to assist in getting what everyone needs while at the same time fulfilling the companies requirements for useful information.
After the first day we had a scheduled dinner at The River City Brewery. It’s been some time since I had been there, Ching and I used to go there every week when we played poker a lot. However, since we started not eating out so much we have not been in a while.
The food was just as good as I remember it. Our Vice President ordered several appetizers to start with. We had some Sweet BBQ wings that were pretty good. They had just enough heat to them that kind of snuck up on you. We also had some pork quesadillas that were pretty good and a nice spinach and artichoke dip.
When it came time for dinner I ordered one of their pizzas, the Tomato Basil.
It’s really good. I didn’t realize that it came with tomatoes on it. I was just expecting tomato sauce and some nice cheese with some basil sprinkled on it, but I was pleasantly surprised to have gotten whole sliced tomatoes. It was also very, very good.
I also had never had any of their beers so I ordered their Brick Red.
It’s not as good as the Samuel Adams Brick Red that I had in Boston (and can only get in Boston) but it was still a very good beer that I will order again the next time I go.
If you are new to Wichita or are just visiting, I would highly recommend that you pay The River City Brewery a visit.
You will not be disappointed.

WWGD?
Posted on July 28, 2012 by Ching under Babies, Things to Do.
I should be mayor of Tracy’s by now. Seriously. We were there a couple of times this week and it sounds like we will need to go back. Ugh.
On our way home from dinner on Tuesday night (National Tequila Day) we kept hearing a weird noise. Well, we had just driven by the potential new house to see if the satellite dish was still on the roof (and it was) so we figured we could just park in the pool parking lot down the street, hop out of the car and check out what’s going on. As (bad) luck would have it, a bolt (Brian says it’s actually a sheet metal screw) had pierced Bebot’s rear tire on the passenger’s side and that was making the weird sound that we were hearing.
I was like, “What is that? Is that a bolt?” As I start trying to pull it off with my fingers. I’m brilliant after a couple of margaritas. Thankfully, Brian managed to stop me. We agreed to take Bebot to Tracy’s over lunch the next day so they could pull out the bolt or screw or whatever and plug the hole.
We ended up spending our entire lunch break on Wednesday at Tracy’s, but it wasn’t too bad. We just sat in the comfy couch and watched TV while they worked on Bebot. I event joked that we should bring our sack lunches there everyday (since it’s just down the street from our work places).
It was my first time at their new tire center so I had to take a picture of the lobby. It used to be a marine/boat shop before Tracy’s took it over. It’s actually pretty convenient because it’s pretty much right next to the automotive shop.
Anyway, Bebot was about due for an oil change so we told Rob that we would be back on Saturday. So this morning we were back there again. This time at the automotive shop for the oil change.
You can actually see the tire shop next door in this photo.
The good news is that Bebot’s oil change was quick and painless. The bad news is that per Rob, Bebot’s serpentine belt is starting to crack and needs to be replaced. I trust Tracy’s and everything, but it’s still an auto repair shop. They’re about as bad as lawyers as their reputations go, so I can’t help but wonder. Does the serpentine belt truly need to be replaced or is this just a way for them to get more money out of me?
The first thought that came to mind was, “What would Gil do (WWGD)?” Gil is the father of Isaac, one of my coworkers. Isaac always tells me about how knowledgeable and skilled his dad is at auto repair and mechanical stuff. So I immediately sent him (Isaac, not Gil) a picture of Bebot’s serpentine belt (shown above), told him what Rob said, and asked, “WWGD?” Without missing a beat, he replied that if the belt is old and cracked then he would replace it, and that’s what Gil would say too. LOL.
Brian’s coworker Chad (Molen) said that serpentine belts typically last 100,000 miles, but I don’t really want to chance it. I don’t know that the guys at Tracy’s would have recommended that it be replaced, had it not shown signs of wear. I’d been reading online that belts are typically replaced after 6 years or 60,000 miles. We bought Bebot new in June 2006, right after my Bachelor’s Degree, so he’s officially 6 years old this year. As far as I know, I’ve never replaced the belt. Although, I did call Toyota this morning just to be sure. They confirmed that there is no record of the serpentine belt being replaced on my car, so I guess it’s time to do it.
Belt is scheduled to be replaced in a couple of weeks unless I get some really good arguments for waiting. If you have any advice, feel free to comment down below.
