Who Spoiled This Kid?

So Brian and Logan were watching Gurren Lagann (one of Logan’s favorite animes) upstairs in the spare room, currently dubbed Logan’s room. I’ve got a load of laundry going so I stayed downstairs and was watching International House Hunters (of course, though, it was a repeat this time).
After watching a couple of episodes Brian asked Logan, “Do you want to watch another one?” Gurren Lagann is an animated series with several episodes that you can watch on Netflix Instant Watch.
“Yeah,” Logan replied. “But only if we can watch it downstairs.”
When Brian asked why, Logan told him that the TV was too small. The TV in that room is a 47″ LCD, mind you, and it is plenty big enough for Brian and me. At least until Brian decided he wanted an LED LCD TV, which is what we have downstairs. The TV downstairs is 55″ so it is actually bigger, but not by much. I didn’t think that a few more inches made that much of a difference on the display, honestly. If I had to guess, I think Logan can tell that the picture quality is better downstairs and that’s what he’s picking up on. He might be thinking that the clarity is better because it’s a slightly bigger TV and doesn’t realize that it’s a better TV altogether.
Whatever the case, Logan is completely ruined from watching regular TV. I’m pretty sure that I will find him watching Netflix downstairs instead of the TV in his room when I wake up tomorrow morning. =P
P.S. I think Brian is ruined also because now he’s hooked on Gurren Lagann. And he wouldn’t even have known that this manga series existed if it weren’t for Logan.

Kids Nowadays

Yesterday, after Logan’s mom and dad left, Brian offered to show Logan how to operate the TV in his room. He was like, “I can show you how to work the TV so you can watch cartoons when you wake up in the morning.”
Logan didn’t seem that interested.
“You watch cartoons in the morning, right?” Brian asked. Of course, this is what Brian and I did growing up. You get up in the morning and have breakfast in front of the TV, while watching cartoons. I mean, who didn’t watch Saturday morning cartoons? I’m pretty sure Brian and I weren’t the only nerdy kids of our era.
“I watch Netflix on my XBOX in the morning,” Logan explained in a blase, nonchalant kind of way that made both Brian and I feel uncool (like, come on, morning cartoons are so yesterday), but at the same time impressed us because we have an appreciation for nerdiness and our nephew was showing some of that.
“Let me show you how to use the Blu-ray player in your room then because that’s how you get to our Netflix,” Brian replied without missing a beat; and then Brian added a whole bunch of shows that Logan wanted to our Instant Watch queue on Netflix. He is so good with children.

Gavin’s First Birthday

Gavin had the coolest birthday cake ever! They had a rubber ducky theme.
He also had a “smash” cake. I didn’t know about “smash” cakes until the other day. I guess that is the thing to do. You have a cake for everyone to enjoy and then a little, individual-sized cake for the baby to “smash” – LOL.
April knows all about these things.
We ended up playing Tekken at the birthday party, which was fun, but sucked at the same time for two reasons. (1) Gavin was messy after “smashing” his “smash” cake and so he took a bath right after. April said they used the hooded towel I’d gotten for him, but I was downstairs playing Tekken so I missed it. It would have been a great photo-op. (2) I gave myself a hand cramp (my hands still hurt today) trying to defend my “champion” status at Tekken. I think I need to lay off the video games for a while.

Haven’t We Met Before?

By the way, the server we had at Bonefish Grill the other night turned out to be an old poker acquaintance. After he came to our table the first time, I told Brian that I thought he looked familiar.
“I was just thinking the same thing,” Brian confessed.
Then it came to me, “I know where we know him from! Poker! Let’s ask when he comes back.”
I was thinking Blue Collar because I didn’t go back in my memory far enough. Bill actually said we played poker together at Fingers. That was over six years ago! He’d moved away to Denver and then come back since then. What a happy coincidence that we got placed in his section!
Incidentally, I went through my 2004 pictures and found this photo I had taken of Bill when we were playing together at the same table at Fingers. I have always been a picture freak so not a moment passes without being captured for posterity.
So everyone, meet Bill…

Anniversary Dinner

We decided to have our anniversary dinner at Bonefish Grill this year. It had been quite a while since we’d last dined there so it was time.
It was a good thing that we made reservations because they were super busy on Friday night. There was a couple ahead of us that was quoted a thirty-minute wait, which is a long wait considering it was only a half past six o’clock in the evening. We didn’t have to wait at all, though, because our table was ready when we got there.
Dinner started with Bang Bang Shrimp, a Bonefish specialty and the appetizer item that everyone orders, and a glass of Pomegranate Mango Sangria. Both were delicious!
The sangria was very, very good. So good that I’m considering going back one Wednesday ($5 Bang Bang Shrimp night) just for Bang Bang and drinks.
For my entree, I had one of the specials on the list: flounder with the spinach and lump crab on top. I substituted the seasonal veggies with broccoli because I need fiber.
Brian, who is unadventurous, had the filet with mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies.
He said it was good, but the portions have gotten considerably smaller. We remember going when the restaurant first opened. The servings were much more generous back then. That’s the way it goes, though. As a restaurant has been open for a while, the portions just get smaller and smaller. Not that it matters much because we don’t usually finish our food anyway.
We went downtown post-dinner because Brian promised me salsa dancing at Suede. Parking was a challenge because the Friday night concert was going on at the Farm and Art Market Plaza. There were hundreds of people gathered there.
Suede was pretty empty when we first arrived. It didn’t get packed until about 11:30 PM or so. We didn’t really plan on staying up that late (we’re a couple of old farts) so Brian and I took off around midnight, just when the party was getting started. Neither of us like crowds much and the dance floor had gotten too crowded at that point. I already got a couple of dances out of Brian so I got what I came for… LOL.
Our actual wedding anniversary isn’t until Tuesday, August 10, but we have Logan until then so we figured we’d celebrate early. I think having Logan stay with us for a couple of days is probably the highlight of our anniversary this year. No one has entrusted us with their child before. It really makes me feel like a grown up. Not so sure about Brian, though. He’s looking forward to playing video games with Logan over the next couple of days. I think he’s reverted back to being 10 again. 😉
