Blue Collar Poker

We returned to APL HQ yet again for another try at the Blue Collar Poker Tournament. We must be gluttons for punishment you say. Well, it’s not like it’s a real long, long shot. I did find out Friday that Micheal (aka Phantom2 at Doyles Room) took first place and won $300 at last Sunday’s tourney. It’s ironic that I was the first one out of that tournament while he was the last one out. We had a good laugh about it. I think I’m a pretty good sport when it comes to poker. Despite the embarrassment, I wasn’t really too upset. After all, the only losses I suffered were $10 and a bruised ego. It’s not like I lost my first born or anything.
Anyway, Brian and I returned today with a backup plan. We figured that if we both got knocked out early this time we’d just go watch Casino Royale. We’d both been wanting to see it, but haven’t had a chance to.. Now would be the perfect opportunity.
It’s funny because while we were in the shower Brian asked, “What if we don’t get knocked out by seven? Do you want us to just bail?”
I said, “Baby— if we are still playing at seven we’re nixing the movie because there is a great chance that we are winning some money!” As much as I am a movie buff, I think I’m a bigger poker addict because when it comes down to it, I’d rather be playing poker. Of course, I can watch movies anytime. I only get to to play poker once in a while.
At any rate, we did find ourselves in the predicament that Brian described. It was well after seven and he was still in the game. I had gotten knocked out a few minutes before. I did make it past break time and into the $3K-$6K blind level, though. He texted me if I wanted him to bail so we could watch our movie. I told him no, do your best to win. I said just play well and enjoy yourself. Not to be conceited or anything, but it’s not very often that he outlasts me so he should relish the moment. LOL.
Unfortunately, Brian was short-stacked and did not last much longer than I did. It was about seven-thirty when we were leaving. It was too late to make our movie which was a bummer. We lost all the way around. We didn’t make any money at poker, and we don’t get to enjoy plan B. Our best laid plans were foiled yet again.
Instead of going to the movie we decided to try Bonefish Grill, this new seafood resto at the Waterfront. It had been there for a while but, Brian not being a fish-eater, we hadn’t had the opportunity to try it. He was still fuming about his last hand (the one that he got knocked out on) so he didn’t really care where we went.
Bonefish Grill has a nice ambience. Cheesy vinyl table covers aside, I think the place is awesome. The food is fantastic. My mahi mahi wasn’t the best I’ve had, but the lump crab corn chowder was delicious. I could make a meal out of it by itself.
Brian had to get the filet mignon (he doesn’t eat fish but was nice enough to take me there anyway) because they ran out of sirloin (his first choice). He said the steak was okay but the mashed potatoes were very good.
Losing at poker doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate.. So I talked Brian into getting the bananas fosters. I’d been craving bananas fosters for almost two years, but could not find anywhere that serves it. I came close at Moby’s Fish Tales at Harrah’s NKC, but I was too full at the end of my meal so we didn’t end up getting it. This time I only ate half of my fish to ensure I had room for dessert. Finally, I got to satisfy my craving.
I did find out that they serve creme brulee so I told Brian that we’ll have to come back for that. Some of the things that I want to try next are the bang bang shrimp, crab cakes, mussels, coconut shrimp, calamari, and tilapia among other things. Needless to say, we’ll probably find ourselves there several times this year.
Anyway, it would have been nice if we’d have won some money at poker. It would have helped to pay for our expensive dinner. Then again, I don’t really feel bad because Brian and I hardly ever have expensive dinners any more. So this will be our splurge for the month.

Ching, I cancelled on the Sunday soiree-I have been advised the weather is going to be blizzardly nasty.
