Eight-Way Chop

Posted on April 5, 2008 by under Poker.

I got to participate in an eight-way chop tonight, for the first time ever. Usually, the chop happens right after I get knocked out. I’ll walk away barely breaking even, while everyone else gets the big bucks.

I wasn’t even going to play today. I laid in bed until about 3:00 pm. Brian asked if I wanted to go play poker. I didn’t really feel good so I said no. I told him I just wanted to stay home and stay in bed. He asked if I cared if he went to poker by himself. I told him, that I didn’t mind at all. It’s a $1500 prize pool. One of us has to represent at least.

He came back with a bagel and tomato soup for himself. I got to thinking, I’m really craving pho. We stopped by mom and dad’s yesterday after the doctor (our doctor is in Derby) and they were telling us about eating pho at Kim Huong. The more I thought about pho, the more I thought of how boring it will be to stay at home while Brian is out playing poker.

So I changed my mind. I talked him into taking me to Kim Huong for pho before poker. That got food in my belly so I could take my second antibiotic capsule for the day. I took a teaspoon of that prometh vc with codeine also. Good stuff. The pho, specially. It’s the Vietnamese counterpart of chicken and noodle soup. Whenever it’s rainy or snowy out, or whenever I’m sick, that’s the stuff I crave. I get the #18 (rare steak) with no onions. None of that mystery meat and meatball stuff. I squeeze the lemons in it, add some of the minty leaves, and drop a couple of handfuls of bean sprouts and I’m good.

I played really tight tonight. Tighter than usual. Must be the codeine. Who knows? I laid down several winners. I laid down queen-jack several times. Ace-queen suited even. King-jack, pocket tens, pocket nines… I was laying down some really good hands. I was playing so tight, it was sick (pun intended).

Brian got knocked out right before we dropped to two tables. I always seem to get knocked out at the two-table mark. I was really careful not to end up as bubble girl this time. It paid off. I made it to the final table. I maybe had $80k in chips. I had the second shortest stack. It was such a relief to get an eight-way chop.

Brian and I went in with $20 ($10 chair rental for each of us) and left with $175 (after $100 lopped off the top for Brent, our tournament director for the evening). Not too shabby for about four hours of play and being low stack at that. I’m figuring that’s a little over $40 per hour. I wish every night of poker were this lucrative for me.

Anyway, it was a good deal for everyone because third place only paid out $150 (most of the $1500 prize pool went to first and second place, with first place paying out $750). So when you think about it, you must outlast six other players just get more than $150 — $175 per person doesn’t really look too bad.

I told Brian, I’m really glad I decided to come out because I almost stayed home tonight. Now I have money to buy my graduation regalia and then some. Woo hoo!

Brian Took Me to the Doctor Today

Posted on April 4, 2008 by under Life.

Brian in the Corvette Room

Brian took me to the doctor today. I could have gone myself, except he took my car and I don’t have keys to the truck. I think subconsciously he wanted to take me to the doctor no matter what, which is why he chose to take Bebot to work today.

Ever since he started working for Viega and we have been carpooling, I haven’t had reason to drive. The only time I’ve driven is when I had to go to the dentist that one day. I have really enjoyed not having to drive. Besides that, I’ve really enjoyed not having to walk to the P1 parking garage. Yuck. I’m so glad Brian works downtown now.

Anyway, we were in the Corvette room today. I don’t think I have ever been in there. If I have, I don’t remember. Brian says that it is his favorite room. I took a bunch of pictures (check my Flickr photostream).

Doc gave me an antibiotic (capsules) and prometh vc with codeine (liquid). Jennifer Cannady said she took the same liquid stuff when she was sick and it was good. I looked forward to taking it and feeling better. It doesn’t taste as bad as it smells, actually. It doesn’t work as well as I thought it would. Maybe I’m just not taking enough?

The crappiest part of being sick is that every time I cough a little bit of pee comes out. Brian offered to get me some Depends to help with that problem. He said he would wear it too if it would make me feel better. Now, that’s love.

Official Commencement Invitation

Posted on April 3, 2008 by under Family, Flickr, Life, School.

Official Commencement Invitation

I received my official commencement invitation today. We got the short stick this year. Our ceremony is at 8:00 am, which means graduate check in is at 7:00 am. Way too early.

I told Brian that we need to buy my graduation regalia this Saturday. The WSU bookstore is open until 2:00 pm. I should be done with the Green Team thing well before noon so Brian and I will have plenty of time.

I thought I would be smart and save my cap and gown from undergrad. I figured I would save some money this way. WSU is a lot smarter than I am. The masters graduation regalia is different than the undergrad regalia, unfortunately. This means I have to spend $50 out of my own pocket. Maybe someone will be nice and donate some funds to my Paypal as a graduation gift (hint, hint).

Anyway, I will be well-decorated this year since I am part of Golden Key and Beta Gamma Sigma. Go me!

The only downside is that Jen’s graduation is the same day as mine. I’m guessing mom and dad will go to that one. I will have Brian, Donna (Dave has something going on that day), and Jan in my corner at least. =P

No word yet on a graduation feast. You figure that I deserve it with this being a masters and all. Call it a fee for missing my graduation.

Anyway, those who cannot make it can watch commencement webcast on Shockervision.tv (click on the Commencement link). Select the May 17th, 8:00 am ceremony.

P.S. You can go here to view past commencement videos. Click on the Search tab, then select the May 13, 2006 Barton School of Business commencement video to watch my undergrad commencement video from two years ago.

Beta Gamma Sigma

Posted on March 30, 2008 by under Flickr, Life, School.

It's nice to know my 3.9 is worth something.

I know mom says I don’t really need someone to give me a pat on the back for doing well academically, but I took Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) up on their invite. I’m being inducted into the organization on April 20th.

I received a bunch of informational stuff about BGS as an undergrad. They kept sending letters saying you’re doing great, keep it up, and maybe we’ll invite you. As you know, you have to be in the top 10% of your graduating class (as an undergrad) to be eligible and my GPA was not good enough (due in part to my bulakbol days as a Comp Sci and Engineering major). Since they look at your cumulative GPA, I just couldn’t overcome all those bad grades the first time that I went to college.

I think my business GPA was a 3.8, but I ended up with a 3.2 cumulative GPA after you consider my 170-plus credit hours. Needless to say, a 3.2 is not good enough.

Anyway, the nice thing is I get to start over in grad school. So I have a clean slate. I don’t have to worry about those miserably unsuccessful Engineering and Programming classes. So far in grad school I’ve only received one B — but that’s okay, because it’s in Operations Management, and everyone knows that class is horrid. Hopefully, I will get an A in my last class and I’ll keep my 3.9. Either way, I’m being inducted into BGS so I’ll be okay if I get a B. I’ll be disappointed, but it won’t be the end of the world.

I got invited to Golden Key last year, but I had reservations when I read about some of the corruption that has tarnished the organization. I found out today that my invitation is still open so I went ahead and joined. What the heck. Why not?

So now I’m a member of both BGS and Golden Key. I’m $200 poorer for the membership fees and such, but I feel ten times special. Let’s hope the $200 will prove to be a good investment. Only time will tell.

Free Movie Day

Posted on March 30, 2008 by under Movies.

When we watched Jumper last month, the server ended up spilling soda all over the place so we all got free movie passes. Brian’s parents, who went with us, redeemed their free passes last week for Horton Hears a Who. We redeemed ours today for 21. I must say that it is the best free movie we have ever seen. Jim Sturgess, who I haven’t really seen before (at least not that I can recall), did a fantastic job of playing the lead role; Kate Bosworth is always cute; and Kevin Spacey is always fantastic. He is good in all the movies I’ve seen him in.

Anyway, 21 is like the Rounders of blackjack. It makes me want to learn how to count cards. LOL. I’m kidding. I know it’s bad, but the movie makes it look cool. Of course, I would hate to run into any Lawrence Fishburn types. Sad to say, there will be no high roller suites in my future. 🙁
