Playing Cards with the Grandparents

Posted on November 23, 2008 by under Family, Flickr, Games.

Here are pictures of us playing cards yesterday before I left to pick Brian up at the airport. Amanda and her daughters Jessica and Olivia played cards with us also.

I’ve been seeing tweetup messages on Twitter for a while and have always wanted to attend. Brian is so anti-social, though. He would never let me. This recent one was at Josh Dutcher’s so I sold it to Brian this way, “Don’t you want to meet Dan’s brother?” If it were anyone else’s house, I don’t think we would have come at all.

Brian and I are so punctual, it’s scary. I think we were the first ones to arrive. He wouldn’t get out of the car at first. He told me to ask if it is the right house first and only then would he get out. =P

I think there were 36 attendees altogether. It seemed like more. Maybe more if you count the kids there’s more than that? I asked Josh what possessed him to host the event. He said that someone at the last tweetup suggested that they have a game night tweetup and there were only 10 or so people the last time so he volunteered to host it. I guess he didn’t anticipate how huge the event would become. Every inch of his house was overrun by WichiTweeps.

It was a wonderful first experience. Going with the cherry-popping analogy… You know how you want your first time to be special and everything and how it doesn’t always work out that way in reality? Well, this was an awesome first tweetup for me. We got to meet so many interesting people of all ages. WichiTweeps are a truly diverse group. And, to top it off, everyone was so nice and welcoming.

I’m so glad Cindy told me about the event. I probably would have missed it otherwise. Hats off to Josh for being a wonderful host and Carrie for helping him out.

Anyway, Brian and I left pretty early (about 10:30 pm) because Brian doesn’t really like to be around people that much and he still had to finish packing for his trip. He is flying out to New Hampshire today. On the drive home I told Brian about how much fun that was. I mean, I found people to play Catchphrase with! LOL. I’m a geek, I know.

Brian didn’t have as much fun as I did as you can tell from his tweets (I don’t know that he ever does), but he said he didn’t hate it as much as karaoke so I’m hoping this won’t be our last.

Saturday Night Bowling Challenge

Posted on October 4, 2008 by under Games, Life.

Brian, in a desperate attempt to cheer me up, took me to Thai Tradition for dinner tonight and challenged me to bowling. I have been extra crabby lately, and I didn’t even realize it until he pointed it out. Since I’m miserable and crabby, then he is too.

He said he was tired of me moping around so he wanted to take to dinner to a place we haven’t been in a really long time. We haven’t been to Thai Tradition in a really long time because he’s not really fond of the place, but he wanted to take me there because he figured it would make me happy. I will save the Thai Tradition comments for the Foodies blog, though. Let’s talk about bowling…

I’m hyper-competitive so everything is a contest. Naturally, we bowled to see who could score the highest. I am a better bowler than Brian so I knew I would come out on top. Brian has his moments though, and has beaten me in the past. I had gotten into a good groove in the first round so I was thinking that I would beat him in such a way that even my lowest score would be higher than his highest score. It didn’t quite turn out that way, but I did beat him two out of three games.

ROUND 1: GAME 1 GAME 2 GAME 3 SERIES AVERAGE
BRIAN 132 134 141 407 136
CHING 133 193 134 460 153

Back when I used to bowl regularly, ten years ago or so, I used to bowl a 150 average so that was pretty much expected. The 193 was a surprise, though. Halfway through, it looked like I was about to bowl a 200 game. I would have broken 200, too, had I picked up my spare on the tenth frame. There were two pins and I clipped one and missed the other completely. It was an uncharacteristic miss. I felt robbed.

The next round started out rough, but then I started marking all over the place. Strikes and spares. There were hardly any open frames. At one point, I thought I would have three 200 games going. I fell short, but check out the results.

ROUND 2: GAME 1 GAME 2 GAME 3 SERIES AVERAGE
BRIAN 136 125 116 377 126
CHING 170 190 173 533 178

Brian started to get tired halfway through our second round. He’s not really used to bowling more than three games. I was really excited about my 500+ series. When I used to bowl, I didn’t get a lot of 500 series games. I’d get pretty close, but it was hard to get three really good games. My main weakness was that I didn’t ever get enough strikes to score higher. I was really good at picking up spares and hardly ever missed so I would consistently mark on each frame. However, unless you have strikes to connect the marks, you don’t really end up with great scores. I had a pretty good night tonight, getting more strikes than I ever have.

I’m really rusty, though, so I missed several easy spares and had more open frames than I would have liked. My ball was like a guided missile that never missed so it’s a bummer when the ball misses its target. I was pretty inconsistent, too. There were several times that I threw the ball and halfway down the lane I knew that it would be a strike; at the same time, there were also several times that I threw the ball and missed my arrow completely and immediately I knew it would be horrible. I got lucky, though, because on these occasions they were easy spares to pick up. Although, I did have a few splits. I didn’t convert any of them at all.

Anyway, bowling tonight made me realize just how much I enjoy it. Maybe one of these days I can talk Brian into joining a mixed league with me. I would really love to start bowling regularly again so that I can get even better at it.

By the way, our little contest continues with racquetball tomorrow. Brian seems to think that he is going to beat me at racquetball. He won the last time we played, but with my recent bowling victory I think I’ve got momentum on my side. He thinks he will come out on top. For all we know Brian might forfeit tomorrow because he is all achy from bowling six games. We shall see.

All You Can Bowl

Posted on September 21, 2008 by under Games.

Though it doesn’t look it from this photo, Brian actually had fun last night. We had planned to go cosmic bowling last week, but then we thought our plans fell through so we went to dinner with Brian’s parents at Carrabba’s instead. Right before dinner, our bowling plans were back on again.

We had a wonderful time at dinner. Joe stopped by our table so we got to introduce him to David and Donna. It was really cool. As always, dinner was great and the service was fabulous.

We initially planned to go to West Acres for cosmic bowling, but the Dills got out of their movie early and wanted to start bowling sooner. We ended up at Northrock Lanes instead. It worked out because, at three hours of all you can bowl, it’s a much better value.

We played girls against guys first, which the guys won by four pins (295 to 299, it was a low scoring round). Then we did a couples round, which the Dills won by two pins. Brian and I got pretty close, though. We scored 245 to their 247. During that round Jay and I both scored 137, but Becca outscored Brian 110 to 108 so we lost. Anyway, since Jay and I scored the same he challenged me to a bowl-off. Jay won the bowl-off with 141 to my 138, but only because he got lucky and managed to get two strikes in a row at the very end. =P

I was actually pretty impressed with how well Jay bowled despite ripping his jeans. We all had a good laugh about that. Jay was a pretty good sport about it and didn’t let it slow him down at all.

I didn’t do too bad over all. I can’t remember what I scored the first game we bowled before Cory and April got in the game, but I bowled a 123, 137, and 138. Not too bad, but I could tell how rusty I was. I missed really easy spares. I picked up a baby split, though. So that was pretty good. Last night reminded me of how much I like to bowl. I wish Brian would join a league with me. He won’t, though. Oh, well. Maybe we can do the all you can bowl thing again another day.

Dinner and Phase 10

Posted on May 31, 2008 by under Family, Games.

After our couples massage at Beau Monde, we picked up grandma and grandpa. The six of us (grandma, grandpa, David, Donna, Brian, and I) all had one last dinner together before David and Donna left for their Baltic cruise. Here are some pictures of dinner, and also some pictures of us playing Phase 10 after dinner.

Dinner was yummy. We had pork chops, mac and cheese, and peas. Phase 10 is always fun. Except this time David and Brian were being mean and ganged up on me. I was skipped at least once every round. Party poopers! Oh, and Scooter wanted to get in on the action also. Check him out!
