I Cant Sleep!
Posted on February 9, 2007 by Brian under Family, Life, Poker.
Well here it is at 7:30 in the morning and I cant sleep. Usually when my wife goes off to work i have no problem getting back to sleep and having happy happy dreams of us together, but today i cant get back to sleep. I went to bed around 1:00 in the morning (playing WOW to wind down from a long day at work) and woke up to my wife getting upset because the alarm didn’t go off and the dog was barking for some reason. It was important that she get up early because she had a training class that she is teaching and she had to be there early because it starts at like 7:30. This isn’t the first time our alarm has let us down, it has conveniently not gone off several times in the past (usually i get blamed for it). Thank god the dog barked! We don’t know what she was barking at, maybe the cats were fighting outside the door, maybe the dog had a bad dream or maybe Molly is just smart enough to know that Ching had to be up early and the alarm didn’t go off so she was looking out for her. Either way, thank god for the dog.
I’m excited about tonight, actually i am excited about this weekend. Tonight we have poker! Last week i went to the 10:00pm game, something that we normally don’t do because lately neither of us have made it far enough to be in the invite for the final session. Last week though Ching made it to the final 16 and earned a seat so we stayed for the final session. I showed up late because i am still working second shift (thank god only more week of that crap) and got short chipped and sat at a table. It was going well, i was playing smart and the cards were falling pretty good. Ching got knocked out and thought that i would be right behind her shortly. She went and got her home work and did that for a while and when she noticed that i was not going to go out right away she decided that she was going to leave. I told her that i probably wasn’t far behind (i only had a few chips left) and she told me to keep trying and she would see me when i came home. Several min later i was sure i was going to leave when I went all in with a medium hand, but I survived. I did it again and again till i had built up a substantial Chip stack. I text messaged Ching and told her that i was down to 4 people, several min later i told her it was 3. About 15 min later i told her i was heads up. The guy i was heads up with was someone i had only played a few times. We did the whole all in and fold thing a couple of hands. Then i just wanted to go home and he decided to go all in pre-flop with a King 4 off-suite. I had 6 7 suited. I was like “Sure, why not” call his all in and laid my cards down. He went on the usual poker person rant about how dominated i was and everything. He rolls out the cards and it was 5 4 queen. I had 4 to the straight. He said nothing and dealt the turn, it was trash. the final card was a three, i could see the disappointment on his face before i ever saw what the card was and knew i had won. He went on about how i sucked out and how i shouldn’t have won that blah, blah, blah! What it really comes down to is odds! I had more outs than he did heads up. I could have hit a 6, 7 or any number of spades for the winning hand, not to mention the straight. He had the king and the 4 and that was it. I was ecstatic to win, i immediately called the wife and started yelling “I WON, I WON”. the 2nd place finisher was still standing next to me but i didn’t care. I had won my first APL evening in several years. I tried to repeat that performance at the Blue Collar game on Sunday, but the poker gods weren’t having it. Hopefully with any luck i will place again tonight, if not i at least have the satisfaction of knowing that i won one finally, even if it is the only one i win for the next three years.
Tomorrow is going to be great. First Ching and i have a date at a local massage place for a couples session. I look forward to the relaxation and at the same time I am leary because its a new place and i am unsure of the quality. We are taking a break from Healing waters after they pissed me off so much at Christmas. I really hope this place is good cause its much cheaper and its right next to our house. Later in the evening we are meeting my parents for dinner at a place called Strouds to celebrate my promotion to CSA at work. Ching and I haven’t been there since our wedding reception, almost 5 years ago. All in all it should be a fun and hopefully very relaxing day.
Well i am running out of ideas to blog about so i am going to either play some WOW or try to go back to sleep (I still have to work later), i haven’t decided which. I was hoping that blogging would work like reading and make me sleepy, it works for my wife so i figured it should work for me.
So far I’m still wide awake and wishing my wife was here with me to cuddle with.

The 2nd Shift Blues
Posted on January 15, 2007 by Brian under Family, Life.
Well, here I am! Working 2nd shift for the next 5 weeks. I only pray that its 5 weeks and not any longer. I have not had to work past 5pm in over 8 years. I can’t remember the last time I had to work a Saturday or Sunday. I was looking forward to working mornings because I get off work at 3pm and my wife doesn’t have to go to school till 7pm. This worked out really well cause I could get all the household chores done before 5 when my wife gets off work, then she would come home and we would get something to eat or I would have something ready for her to eat. Then since this semester all her classes start at 7pm, I looked forward to taking her to school and picking her up. Last semester she was so stressed because she had to leave work at 5 and try to make it to school by 5:30. It didn’t always work that way and it would stress her out to no end. This time I can take her so she doesn’t have to worry about finding a parking spot or walking a long distance or even being late for class. And I can be there for her in the event of bad weather, say if it rains, I would be bale to show up at her class with an umbrella ready and walk her from class to the car so she won’t have to worry about getting drenched. I know, all you old people are probably thinking “Man, what a sapâ€. But that’s not it! My wife and I have a very unique relationship. One that I wish the rest of the world could have. I think if everyone was like us we would have no divorce and you would find an increase in happy marriages. I truly believe us to be soul mates and the perfect couple. Some of the people we know say that we are strange because we don’t do anything apart. My wife and I think that everyone is strange because they don’t do anything together. We were just talking the other night and I told her that if she all the sudden said that she wanted to go have a night out with the girls; I would respect that and let her. However, since this is not the normal behavior she has exhibited in the last 7 years that we have been together, I would think that something was up. She agreed and said that the same would apply for me. I replied and told her that I would have to have friends that I wanted to hang out with first, I am kind of anti-social and although I have a few people I like as friends, they know me well enough that they never ask me out with them, and they know that if I ever go out I will always have my wife with me.
I really love my life! I never thought I would have a life like this. I have the perfect marriage and a great family. If you would have asked me 8 to 10 years ago if this was going to be possible, I would have given you a definitive NO! I saw myself being a single, lonely guy living in a small house or apartment and just having a cat to talk to. I can not tell you how relieved I am that my life did not turn out that way. I am so lucky to have met my wife. She is truly my savior and I could never in a million years ever repay her for that.
Baby, with all my heart and every fiber of my being! I want you to know that I love you and will always love you, in this life and the next!
Well there’s my first post of the year. I am sure that I will probably get flack from my friends about how much of a pussy I am and how corny and sappy my post was. But when you’re in love like I am. You just don’t care!

New Discoveries
Posted on December 25, 2006 by Ching under Family, Reviews, Toys, Web.
In keeping with my promise to share with you all the cool things that I come across, this blog entry is more of a “Did you know?” post. These are the things that I discovered recently:
- Kodak has a camera trade-in program. As digital cameras go, I really don’t like Kodak. I am partial to Canon. Most of my digital cameras have been Canons. I also like Nikon cameras because of their excellent reputation among photographers, professionals and amateurs alike.
However, I have to give some props to Kodak for their innovative new marketing approach. They will take any digital camera and give you a cash rebate toward a new Kodak EasyShare digital camera. I think it is a brilliant idea. So brilliant, in fact, that I almost bought myself a Kodak on the spot.
- Rouxbe rocks. Why? Because it is a cutting edge way to learn the culinary arts. This is one of those ideas that you kind of wish you thought of yourself. I predict that this will be the next big thing. Just as I thought MySpace would be great when I joined about three years ago (I was a Friendster user first) and Flickr would be the most popular photo sharing community when I joined it early 2004. I remember getting a month or so of “pro” membership to Flickr by convincing five other people to register. Fun times. Anyway, I actually didn’t know what direction Flickr would take back in those days because it started out as some sort of game. It just kind of evolved into what the members of the community wanted. So anyway, I think Rouxbe is going to be huge! So join today while they still have some 1900 founding memberships left.
If that’s not enough reason to join, you should join because it is a well-designed, user-friendly web site. I know because my friend Ritchie worked on it. He doesn’t do anything crappy. He only does outstanding work. There you go. Check it out. Then send him a message to tell him how awesome you think the new project is.. He will appreciate the positive feedback.
- Blurb will get you published. Self-published, that is. Personally, I think the Blurb way of publishing is actually better than Lulu. There are pros and cons to both, but as far as designing the book I think the software that you use with Blurb is more user-friendly and versatile. For selling, Lulu is probably better. Anyway, try them both and you decide.
- Almost everything at Zazzle is on sale right now. Personalized postage, shirts, hats, mugs and calendars are on sale for $9.99 plus free shipping. You can’t beat that. I actually ordered some personalized stamps for us to use next Christmas. It’s got our picture on it with the words “Happy Holidays from Brian and Ching” printed underneath. I will post a picture when I receive them so you guys can see. Or you could order some yourself and see first hand.
NOTE TO MOM: I think this would be a great idea for your letter campaign. Put your web site URL and phone number on the picture or something. It will surely catch the eye of anyone who comes in contact with the envelope.
These are all the ideas and discoveries I have for now. Until next time.
P.S. Here are some of the photos that we took on Christmas eve and Christmas day. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Plans
Posted on November 10, 2006 by Ching under Family, Flickr, Food and Drink.
For the first time in years Brian and I are on our own for Thanksgiving (his parents who usually host Thanksgiving will be visiting Aunt Verna in Houston). You’d think, having been married for over four years and as old as we are, that we would have plenty of experience hosting Thanksgiving. Sadly, though we thought we were the entertaining type years ago, we realized we don’t like to entertain at all. Thus, our house is often in grave disarray and not in the best form to accept visitors.
I tried to see if mom would mind hosting Thanksgiving dinner. After all, her house is perfect for parties. There’s lots of room for everyone, their home is beautiful and always picture perfect, and mom is a consummate host. She even has all the fancy chaffing dishes and stuff. Alas, mom already had Thanksgiving plans. Because we’ve never really celebrated Thanksgiving (there’s no Thanksgiving holiday in the Philippines) we just treat it like any other day. As it turns out, Tita Beverly is having a fancy soireé for her 50th birthday on this very day. So mom and dad are out. Back to the drawing board we go. (more…)
