Bebot’s First Rain

Posted on July 18, 2006 by under Babies.

Bebot got his first rain on July 9. We were sitting at Taco Shop for a cheap lunch before heading over to Dawn’s house so the girls could meet the suggies they’re adopting. It was an introduction-slash-play-date sort of appointment. You didn’t know we do house calls, did you?

Kidding aside, Bebot is as much Brian’s baby as he is mine. I’ve been instructed to always wear my glasses when driving. No glasses, no drive — strict rules that I’ve already violated a few times.

Speaking of rules, Brian has specific break-in rules too. He tried to get me to read the manual but I refuse to do it. Umm, hello? Bebot will get broken in as I drive him. How about that for breaking in?

My driving style is not really far from the methods the car manufacturer suggests for breaking in the vehicle, anyway. After all, I drive like a grandma — or so Brian tells me. The suggested method is easy acceleration, easy breaks… Pretty much easy everything.

As I did some liesurely internet reading (I know, I refuse to read the manual but the web is my playground so that’s where I get most of my info) I found that there are two opposing schools of thought with regard to breaking in a new vehicle. There’s the gentle break-ins are best camp and then there’s the run it hard camp. Brian and I are partial to the former simply because Brian read the manual and that’s what it said and then Brian pretty much tells me what I should do because I have no time to read the information for myself (most of the time). You’ve got to have folks you can count on for this stuff, you know? At any rate, both schools of thought have their merits. I will let you decide which is right for you.

As for breaking our cars in, Brian and I have other ways in which we have broken our cars in. These ways have had little to do with performance and more to do with our own carnal enjoyment, if you know what I mean. 😉

Brian had proposed the idea the very day we brought him home. Naturally, I said no. I mean, Bebot is our very special baby. He will not be subjected to such disrespect. Brian argued that we had broken in the Neon and the Rodeo that way, why not Bebot? Well, because Bebot is mine. Ha! We finally get to the heart of the matter.

Of course, it isn’t entirely fair to Brian that we have desecrated his cars in the past and I will not allow mine to be even remotely soiled. So I might be convinced otherwise but — only if we put a sheet or towel on the seats… LOL!

Bebot’s First Bath

Posted on July 17, 2006 by under Babies, Life, Toys.

First Wash

We gave Bebot his first bath this weekend. Who is Bebot, you might ask.

Bebot is our newest family member. Sunny’s younger brother.

We couldn’t think of a good name for him so we decided to name him after Brian’s favorite Black Eyed Peas song. He actually tried to get me to translate it for him the other day. The lyrics aren’t the most brilliant. But whatever. He likes the song, nonetheless.

Vacuuming

So anyway, Bebot got a good cleaning. Inside and out. A lot more than I can say for our house.

House cleaning is the main item on the agenda for this weekend. We still have mom and dad’s steam cleaner so I’m going to try to talk Brian into steam-cleaning the carpet. Shush, he doesn’t know yet. I hope he doesn’t collect on his full day of WOW because cleaning house will be a full day event. Exciting, huh?

The only other thing pressing this weekend is Molly’s first makeover. She got her stitches taken out last Friday so we can finally give her a bath.

Instead of giving her a bath, though, I figured I’d just let the groomers do it. It will be her very first time. Now, that’s exciting! 🙂

P.S. Molly weighed 6 lbs and 4 ounces as of July 14th. She’s getting to be such a big girl!

Oh, Dear!

I could get mad, but it’s just a stupid shoe.

You know Molly is a true diva because she gets away with this sort of stuff. Oh, and did you know she has a MySpace profile?

Speaking of Molly, her silver roots are starting to show. I can’t wait to see what other colors she’ll have! I thought she would just be all black, but now I’m hoping she might get some of that beautiful Yorkie coloring.

It’s like getting a new dog all over again!

Joeys Update

Posted on June 4, 2006 by under Babies, Family.

We’ve only got one more joey left available for adoption. Three already have homes to go to. As you know, two are going to Gina and Sue. This morning, I just received confirmation from Dawn that her girls want one. So that leaves only one without a confirmed home.

The joeys won’t be ready to go for at least another two months, but I’m glad that we are able to find homes for them early. I think it gives Brian a sense of relief because he was really worried that I would end up keeping all the babies, which I would’ve done if we wouldn’t have found homes for them. I was ready to buy another cage and everything.

Anyway, we went to mom and dad’s today to bring some more stuff for the garage sale this weekend. We spent over two hours pricing stuff, mostly Brian’s action figures because he has a gazillion. Jen helped but she actually got something out of it. She got a first look at the some of the items and walked away with a pair of Bebe flipflops and four little, metal X-MEN action figures (Bishop, Gambit, Wolverine and Omega Red) for a buck.

We didn’t walk away empty handled either. We took home an artificial tree (for the sugargliders to climb on) and an external zip drive with over a dozen blank zip storage media for Brian. We had actually been thinking of buying a tree for the suggies, but were waiting to find one for the right price. Now we don’t have to because we got one for free.

I actually got on dad for wanting to toss the zip drive because I wanted one last year and I had no idea he had one that was on its way to the dumpster. I have a zip drive now because Brian’s dad just happened to have one that he no longer needed. Now Brian has one, too. So if he needs to retrieve some of his old stuff, I no longer have to get it for him because we now each have our own zip drives.

After the whole pricing activity, we feasted on pork chops and mungo. Yum! Mom had to fry pork chops for Brian because he doesn’t eat mungo. It is so good. He has no idea what he is missing.

Our New Joeys

Posted on May 28, 2006 by under Babies.

Star and Her Joeys

It’s official. We have joeys. Over the last couple of weeks Brian and I have been anxiously and curiously awaiting their debut.

I checked on the gliders a while ago and couldn’t help but scream with panic. Ginger’s belly was deflated and her pouch opening looked like an outie. Star’s belly was lopsided with only one side being full and the other side seemed empty. Since this is our first litter, I didn’t really know what to expect. I thought Ginger had lost her joeys and so I called out for Brian to help me.

With his help we inspected the tunnel and the sleeping pouch. Both of Ginger’s joeys were in the sleeping pouch. One of Star’s joeys was in the tunnel. We are marking today, May 28, on our calendar are the out of pouch date for three out of four joeys. We are hoping that the other one will emerge not too long after.

Brian and I both have to resist the urge to handle the newborn suggies. It’s not recommended that they be handled until they’ve been out of pouch for at least a week. Even then strict rules have to be followed.

Here’s an excerpt from an article in Glider University:

At 7-10 days out of pouch, the eyes will open and fur will begin to develop on the belly. The joeys may now be handled. The following guidelines should be followed:

1. It is best that one person be chosen to consistently handle the gliders until they are more mature.

2. Joeys should only be handled for 5 minutes at a time, building up as time progresses.

3. Joeys should be handled in a quiet, warm, dark place free from drafts.

4. It is best that the joeys be handled with mother present.

In the next two weeks (14-28 days out of pouch), joeys will open their eyes, develop their sense of hearing, and may even try to jump. They will mimic parents and try what they see their parents do. It is vital that both sugar glider parents be with the joeys at this time, as the father’s role is extremely important in the care and teaching of the joeys. Here, a father looks on as his three week old joey tries to jump:

At 28-42 days out of pouch, the markings are becoming more prominent now, and they are beginning to become even more adventurous and confident. At this time the joeys will also begin sampling some of their parents’ food. There is no need to provide any special food for the captive joey, as mother’s milk provides all the nutrition the joey needs. Thus, it is vital that the joey be with his mother at this time! When the timing is right, the joey will begin to eat foods along with his parents and older siblings.

At 42-70 days out of pouch, the joey’s tail will “fluff out”, and the joeys will learn to urinate and defecate on their own. The joeys will become independent, and will eat solid foods along with their parents.

Based on this information, the joeys have another two to three months before they are ready to be separated from their mommies. Brian and I are both really excited to watch them develop and are doing our best to stay out of their way so as not to hinder the process. As soon as it is safe to take photos of the joeys, we’ll be sure to share them everyone. Stay tuned.
