It’s a Labor of Love

Posted on August 3, 2005 by under Web.

That, and you know that I’m a nerd who enjoys creating websites and stuff. What am I talking about? I’m talking about the Mid-Kansas Military Vehicles Preservation Association website overhaul that I started last week. I’m almost finished and it so totally rocks! They can maintain the sight without having to code a lick of HTML. That’s how totally awesome I am!

Although, the endeavor posed a few challenges that I didn’t expect. For instance, I knew I was going to use a content management system (CMS) for the ease of maintenance aspect. I was leaning towards Drupal or Mambo until I realized that the 10G hosting package that the club has does not allow for any MySQL databases. So I had to look for something that uses flat files. I was stuck for a while, so I quit thinking about it and decided to tackle the photo gallery section instead.

My initial thought was to use SimpleViewer, which is what my friend Ritchie uses but I couldn’t get it to work to save my life. I sent him a plea for help via email but he was MIA. I was on my own and wasn’t getting anywhere. So I ditched the SimpleViewer idea and used SimplePhotos instead. It’s really basic, but it installed in like a minute. It works great and, best of all, Brian’s dad likes it.

With the photo gallery being a hit, I decided to bring my focus back to the search for a suitable CMS. The only flat file CMS I could find is ReloadCMS. Good thing it is pretty simple to install because the documentation is total crap. It’s written in Russian or some other language and the translation is horrible! So I’m pretty much jumping off a plane without a parachute on this one. I’m doing the customization and tweaking by trial and error. So far so good, though.

Tonight we are ready to start the overhaul of Brian’s website, which he’s really excited about. We were supposed to start it last night, but I got so wrapped up in the club website. You know how that goes.

Anyway, let me know what you think of the club website. It’s a work in progress, but all the sections are functional so feel free to register and play around with it.

Give This Girl a Pat on the Back

Posted on July 13, 2005 by under Web.

This is more of a go me, woot-woot posting. LOL.

Not only am I kicking Brian’s butt at Ogame, but I just found out that Air Milikay’s Philippines Style Links named Almost Famous (Life After Censorship) Best Blog for July 2005. My blog shares the title with Cia’s Pabulum, which is outstanding so I’m in very good company!

Anyway, Angie talked me into participating in the upcoming NCCJ Walk so I am looking for sponsors. If you are feeling generous, please email me. It is for a very good cause. Thank you in advance for all of your kindness and generosity. I really appreciate it.

You know that blogging has gone totally mainstream when even the local newspaper has a blog.

He Who Has the Last Laugh

He who has the last laugh is slow at getting the joke. 😛

There has been a profound decrease in visitors lately. Perhaps the readership has dwindled because of the lack of drama of late. I should never have scoffed at the anonymous commenter, despite how much they irked me. LOL.

I told Mr. Duncan my woes a couple of weeks ago, during the height of the comment battle. At that time, I considered following in his footsteps and disabling the anonymous comments option. But then I decided, I didn’t really want to do that because I’d much rather rebut. You know me, naturally argumentative and belligerent.

I told Mr. Duncan that I’m not going to disable anonymous comments and then just forget all about it. I swore that I would fight back. I would fiercely reply to anything they would throw at me. I would make the foolishly brazen anonymous commenter think twice about leaving destructive comments in other people’s blogs in the future.

“You know the expression,” he says, “living well is the best revenge.”

“What fun is that?” I countered, “No one reads that stuff. It’s boring.” Case in point, my dwindling readership. No drama, no visitors. As you can see.

He proceeded to tell me that I sounded like Niles from an old episode of Frazier. Niles is odd, but he is funny. It made me realize why I used to enjoy watching the show on those rare occasions that I happened to be home to watch it. I totally relate to Niles. We are both odd people.
