Beta Gamma Sigma

Posted on March 30, 2008 by under Flickr, Life, School.

It's nice to know my 3.9 is worth something.

I know mom says I don’t really need someone to give me a pat on the back for doing well academically, but I took Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) up on their invite. I’m being inducted into the organization on April 20th.

I received a bunch of informational stuff about BGS as an undergrad. They kept sending letters saying you’re doing great, keep it up, and maybe we’ll invite you. As you know, you have to be in the top 10% of your graduating class (as an undergrad) to be eligible and my GPA was not good enough (due in part to my bulakbol days as a Comp Sci and Engineering major). Since they look at your cumulative GPA, I just couldn’t overcome all those bad grades the first time that I went to college.

I think my business GPA was a 3.8, but I ended up with a 3.2 cumulative GPA after you consider my 170-plus credit hours. Needless to say, a 3.2 is not good enough.

Anyway, the nice thing is I get to start over in grad school. So I have a clean slate. I don’t have to worry about those miserably unsuccessful Engineering and Programming classes. So far in grad school I’ve only received one B — but that’s okay, because it’s in Operations Management, and everyone knows that class is horrid. Hopefully, I will get an A in my last class and I’ll keep my 3.9. Either way, I’m being inducted into BGS so I’ll be okay if I get a B. I’ll be disappointed, but it won’t be the end of the world.

I got invited to Golden Key last year, but I had reservations when I read about some of the corruption that has tarnished the organization. I found out today that my invitation is still open so I went ahead and joined. What the heck. Why not?

So now I’m a member of both BGS and Golden Key. I’m $200 poorer for the membership fees and such, but I feel ten times special. Let’s hope the $200 will prove to be a good investment. Only time will tell.

Not This Again

Posted on March 17, 2008 by under Flickr, School.

3.9 or not, I'm never doing this again!

I got invited to OMA’s Academic Achievement Recognition Ceromony again. I’ve decided I’m boycotting it until they have an academic recognition ceremony for white people. Just kidding!

Although, I have wondered about that… If you look closely at WSU’s demographic, white people are as much a minority as anyone else. It’s pretty much a melting pot with all cultures well-represented. Do we minorities really need that much encouragement that so much more attention needs to be given to us? Can we not succeed otherwise? These are some questions to ponder. I’m not in the mood to wax philosophical right now, though, so let’s save that for another time.

The main reason I’m skipping the event this year is (a) I don’t really need someone to give me a pat on the back, and (b) it was so disorganized last year that it was painful. The ceremony last year left me feeling like I had just stepped out of a bad movie — I’ll never get those two hours of my life back!

Serendipitous

We had our annual management meeting at the Airport Hilton this year. Incidentally, we had my bridal shower there six years ago.

Speaking of serendipitous… I ran into Becca, Dill, April, and Corey while waiting for Brian at the airport a couple of weeks ago.

I got there early on Friday night (February 15) because I wanted to use the time to catch up on reading for Advanced Strategic Management (MGMT 885) class. Besides, since I wasn’t playing poker (and I have no life) I had nothing better to do. Anyway, I was reading my handouts while patiently waiting for Brian when I heard, “Chingay!”

It was Becca, Dill, and Corey. They were waiting for April. She spent the week in Denver. I found it uncanny that her flight came in about the same time as Brian’s flight. What are the odds that Brian and someone else we know are both out of town the week of Valentines? I think it is some sort of corporate conspiracy to increase national divorce rates—job security for liars.. I mean, lawyers. LOL.

Kidding aside, the six of us ended up going to dinner that night at Logan’s. Ugh. Bad idea. Never go to Logan’s an hour before they close. The kitchen is pretty much out of commish. We had the worst food and service ever. Needless to say, Brian and I haven’t been back.

I would have blogged about the Logan’s experience on Foodies but I have been super busy. MGMT 885 is a lot of work! Anyway, it’s almost over. I’m counting down the days to graduation—May 17—mark your calendars!

VistaPrint and Graduation

Posted on February 24, 2008 by under School, Sponsored Post.

Graduation time is upon us again and that means a new opportunity for my husband to design graduation invitations for me. Last time he designed invitations not only for me but for a few of my friends as well. This time it is just for me and, since this is my last time in school and this is the big degree (Masters in Business Administration), I need to make sure that these invitations are really special.

I think this year I am going to use VistaPrint to create custom postcards that I can mail to all of our friends and family. I learned that if you use the coupon code “BlogPostcards100” at checkout you will receive 100 free postcards. This will help me to save money because I can get like 100 for a little over $20.00. So its like getting two sets for the price of one. I don’t know if we have 200 friends and family to send these out to but I am sure that we can find some people that we have not talked to in a few years. We have family out of state and out of country and that should help to thin out the stack. We will also have friends of our family that I am sure our parents will want to give invitations too.

All-in-all I think VistaPrint will do a great job in offering high quality postcards at a reasonable price. And with the bonus code, we will be able to tell twice as many people about my achievement.

January Watch Party Reminder

Posted on January 2, 2008 by under Life, School.

I got a reminder email from the WSU alumni association today about the January watch parties coming up. I don’t know if I can go to one of these things. Over the years of attending classes at WSU, I’ve learned to loathe basketball fans because they take up precious parking space on campus. They are the reason that I have to walk several miles to class on game nights. They are the reason for the blisters on my feet. They are the reason that I arrive in class not just late but grumpy as well.

I think it’s funny that come May, after I graduate, I’ll be on the other side of the fence. No longer will I have to attend classes. Instead, I’ll be attending games (if I can drag Brian to some) in support of my alma mater. As the world turns…

Anyway, here’s the scoop on the watch parties this month:

Come out and show your Shocker colors during the month of January as WSU men’s basketball travels to Bradley, Missouri State, Illinois State and Southern Illinois. There will be fans, friends and great Shocker action during the game at a location in your area!

The Games:

WSU vs. Bradley

WSU vs. Missouri State
Tuesday, January 8 @ 6:05 pm

Go Shocks!

To be perfectly honest, I doubt Brian and I will ever turn into Shocker basketball fans. But for those of you (like Jenni who was using the MBA Meet & Greet and the YPW events as dating services) who might be interested in these things… For whatever purpose you might have for attending… Well, now you’ve got the scoop. LOL.
