If you’ve never been to Old Mill (on Douglas, near St. Francis) you’re missing out. It’s one of my favorite places to eat lunch downtown. And, best of all, they serve breakfast/brunch on Saturdays!

What the restaurant looks like before the lunch rush. Be warned, as soon as people start piling in, it can get pretty loud inside the restaurant. Casual conversation quickly becomes more challenging. Although, I rarely ever talk when I’m trying to enjoy their delicious food so it’s all good.

The blue plate special on Thursdays: chicken fried chicken, with mashed potatoes, green beans, and cornbread muffin.

In case you’re wondering, the specials on the other days of the week are enchiladas on Mondays, Monterey on Tuesdays, lasagna on Wednesdays, meatloaf on Fridays, and sanchos on Saturdays. The restaurant is closed on Sundays.

Here’s my review for the Wichita Eagle.

Old Mill Tasty Shop on Urbanspoon

The bottom line: this place should be on everyone’s “must try” list. It’s one of the best diners around these parts. There’s lots to love from their delicious dishes, satisfying sandwiches, and super yummy desserts. Also, they serve old fashioned malts and fountain soda. Where else can you get that in Wichita?

Why You Need to Move to Quarters at Cambridge

Posted on August 4, 2012 by under Reviews.

If you’re moving to Wichita and looking for a place to live, look no further than Quarters at Cambridge. I posted a list of reasons why we love living here not too long ago. Here are my top ten reasons (not in any particular order, except for the last item on the list because it is the number one reason why we moved here):

  • Location, Location, Location
  • Amenities like Salt Water Pool and Spacious Clubhouse
  • Beautiful Grounds and Landscaping
  • Gated Entry and Security Cameras
  • Washer and Dryer in Every Unit
  • Several Floor Plans to Choose From
  • Great Insulation and Sound-Proofing
  • Online Resident Portal
  • House Cleaning Service
  • Excellent Customer Service

I elaborate more on these reasons in a previous blog post. Feel free to go back and read it. The one thing that was missing from that last blog entry were pictures. Luckily, I found a virtual tour of one of the townhomes on YouTube.

This video is of one of the end units with a fireplace. Our unit is laid out a little differently and does not have a fireplace. Although, we get a little more square footage in exchange for the fireplace. I also like that the hallway connecting our two bedrooms overlooks the living room, so I can throw things down to Brian or yell at him while he’s playing video games. LOL. Follow this link for a virtual tour of our floor plan.

Here is a virtual tour of one of the one bedroom apartments, which is really popular and has an extra long waiting list right now.

I like the one bedroom apartments but, if you can swing it, get a townhome because you get so much more space. Plus both of the bedrooms, which are about equal in size, have en suite bathrooms so it’s like having two master bedrooms — perfect for roommates. And, there’s no waiting list on townhomes right now.

I really hope that those of you looking for a place to live in Wichita seriously consider Quarters at Cambridge. This is the best place to live in all of Wichita, hands down.

Bite ME BBQ

Posted on August 4, 2012 by under Food and Drink, Reviews.

2012-08-03 11.43.07.jpg

After being open for over two months, Brian and I finally got around to checking out Bite ME BBQ. I don’t know why we waited so long considering it’s just down the street from both of our work places. We finally went there yesterday.

2012-08-03 11.38.15.jpg

The interior is actually really nice. I was expecting a Hog Wild or Delano, but the atmosphere and decor are more upscale. It’s got a nice combination of booths and tables and bar seating. The furnishings and decor make it look more like a nice, sit-down steak place rather than a casual, “mom and pop” BBQ joint, which I think just adds to the appeal.

2012-08-03 11.19.12.jpg

The food is delicious. I think I found my new favorite place for BBQ in Wichita. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which they serve on ciabatta bread, and a side of potato salad. I figured the pulled pork sandwich would be good and I thought the ciabatta bread was a great choice.

I prefer not to eat my BBQ sandwiches on toast because they always fall apart and the BBQ sauce ends up slathering my fingers and, let’s face it, hamburger buns are just lame. So kudos to Bite ME for using ciabatta bread. Great idea.

Anyway, I started to say that I expected my sandwich to be good. I love pulled pork and have yet to eat a pulled pork sandwich that I didn’t like. LOL. But it was really the potato salad that wow-ed me. It far exceed my expectations of BBQ restaurant potato salad. I loved the sweet flavor to it. I don’t know whose recipe or idea that is, but I want to give them a hug. That’s potato salad that I could eat a bowl of and be happy.

2012-08-03 11.17.42.jpg

Brian had the rib dinner with a side of sweet potato fries. Bite ME does sprinkles white powdered sugar over their sweet potato fries. Brian was not so keen on that, but I wanted to try it so we asked for the powdered sugar on the side. The sweet potato fries were great by themselves. They were fried perfectly. I think they would have been even better with the white powdered sugar all over, but I still prefer salt. Lots and lots of salt. LOL. I like my fries super salty because I’m weird.

The real star of this plate was the ribs, though. Holy cow. Those ribs are big and meaty. And had great flavor. They were absolutely delicious. I know because Brian let me have a bite. But only one bite. As good as my meal was, that one bite made me wish I’d ordered the same thing he did. I’m definitely going back and getting the rib dinner. With a side of that yummy potato salad, of course.

2012-08-03 11.17.07.jpg

Brian’s coworker got the chicken fried steak sandwich with fries. He said it was good, but I don’t really know because I didn’t taste it. I don’t know him well enough to ask for a bite of his sandwich or steal a fry from his plate. Other than taking a picture of his meal, I pretty much left his food alone.

The fries looked perfect though. If they tasted half as good as they looked then I’d say they’re winners. Maybe I was just so hungry that day that everything looked good. I mean, I was starving when we arrived at the restaurant. However, I don’t think my taste buds would betray me. Although, I am going back soon just for good measure. It can’t possibly be because their food is deliciously addictive. I’ll keep going back just to try stuff because I’m not quite sure I got all the flavors.

The only thing I was disappointed with was that I’d waited this long to try it. Seriously. I can’t believe I’d been missing out on all this good BBQ. With a clever name like Bite ME, you’d think I would have been there the day they opened. I love, love, love the name. It’s like, “Where do you want to eat today?” “Bite ME.” “No really. Where do you want to go?” “Bite ME.” LOL. Love it.

Oh, and for those of you who say there’s never anything good to eat after midnight, Bite ME is open until 2 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. Late night dining in Wichita just got ten times better. Jeah!

The Donut Whole

Posted on July 30, 2012 by under Food and Drink, Reviews.

I’d eaten donuts from the Donut Whole before, but I had never been until yesterday. It’s actually a cool, little place. And they have free wifi, which is a bonus.

2012-07-29 09.24.58.jpg

We had the triple chocolate, chocolate crunch, chocolate malt, and maple bacon. They were all delicious in their own way. The maple bacon flavor was a little weird, though. It’s not bad, but I doubt I would get it again.

2012-07-29 09.25.42.jpg

I got a yummy hot chocolate with whipped cream to go with my donuts.

2012-07-29 09.28.39.jpg

Logan got a small hot chocolate with no whipped cream.

2012-07-29 09.29.49.jpg

He hardly drank any of it, though.

Brian had coffee. He liked it even though it was different than the coffee that he’s used to at Scooter’s.

Here’s a photo of me biting into the maple bacon donut.

The Donut Whole on Urbanspoon

I really like the Donut Whole. Not only are their donuts delicious, but they have good hot chocolate. And they have quirky decorations. And free wifi. And it’s just a fun place to hang out. I would totally go back and try some of the other donut flavors. What do you guys think I should try next? Leave suggestions in the comments down below.
