Geek-o-rama!
Posted on July 28, 2010 by Brian under Movies.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls! Welcome to the nastiest, most ghetto movie theater in the city of Wichita! NORTHROCK CINEMA!
Tonight we got to go to the Northrock Theaters and watch “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”. This was a funny and campy indie comic that ended up being turned into a movie. All in all, the movie was not that bad. It had some great music, some actors that I thought I would never see in a movie like this and the comic book overlay throughout the movie was kinda funny. If you’re a gamer, there are a ton of gaming references to go along with all of the outrageous fighting.
The funny thing, after all of the fights, everyone just acted like it was an everyday thing. I would not have gone out of my way to see it if it was not for the free ticket that we got from a friend. If you want my opinion (and I know you do), I would just wait for it on Netflix.
As for the theater, well… That place needs to be burned to the ground. I mean it. It’s a dump and it really needs to be burned to the ground, for health reasons… Really!
We sat in their biggest theater and my first impression was “Did I really used to come here regularly?” They had light bulbs burned out, the seats were all torn up and the place smelled like cigarette smoke. I asked Ching “Why do the seats smell like smoke?” She said, “Probably because people HAVE smoked in here.” It was a very disturbing place for a germophobe like myself.
I give the movie 3 out of 5 stars. It was fun. You didn’t have to think too much and I didn’t fall asleep. I give the theater -5 stars, for its disturbing, nasty and probably haunting typhoidic experience.

Movie Night — Legion
Posted on July 23, 2010 by Ching under Movies.
The Dills came over for movie night last night. We watched Legion. The dialogue left a lot to be desired, but the movie was pretty entertaining nonetheless. Maybe because I love Paul Bettany. The first time I noticed him was in A Knight’s Tale, one of my favorite movies.
I think all of the side comments made the movie. Brian absolutely hates it when people talk through movies, but Legion was just begging for it. I mean, who the heck names their kid Jeep? And if Jeep is the protector and all mankind depend will depend on him, then we are all in big trouble. LOL.
Michael, on the other hand, can be my protector any day. Did I already mention that I love Paul Bettany?
Incidentally, we didn’t go to bed until one o’clock this morning. Brian was like, “That’s it. The Dills are not coming over on a school night anymore. We can only invite them over on a Friday or Saturday night.”
In their defense, we didn’t get to start the movie until late. They didn’t arrive at our place until after 8 pm and then that’s when Mandy (our next door neighbor, who we love because she super nice and super quiet) got home from running errands. She was put in charge of the United Way fundraising campaign at her work, Stinson Morrison Hecker, so she wanted to borrow our electric grill for a cookout they’re doing tonight. When she first asked me this on Tuesday, I told her it was no problem but I was worried that she wouldn’t be able to transport the grill to her work. She thought it would fit in the back seat of her car. I told her that Brian could put both grills (she was taking her own grill as well, but needed a second one) on the back of the truck and take it to her work if she wanted.
She put her grill in the trunk of her car and it fit. She has an indoor/outdoor George Foreman grill that disassembles. Ours, unfortunately, does not. Jay and Brian tried to put it in her car, but there was no way it could fit. The only alternative was my suggestion — use the truck to transport the grill.
So off Brian and Jay went. They followed Mandy who had her grill in the trunk of her car to the Stinson Morrison Hecker office down the street. Becca and I stayed at home and waited for them. Mandy’s office is just two minutes away from our place (which Mandy has found to be both an advantage and disadvantage) so I reassured Becca that the guys wouldn’t be gone long. Little did I know that they would get a tour of the building and take FOREVER.
Brian, the wonderful husband that he is, knew I would want pictures (because I’ve never been inside the Stinson Morrison Hecker building) so he dutifully took photos and posted them on Flickr for me. Check out this huge aquarium in the lobby!
They also have this nice, huge balcony overlooking the water.
I love the Waterfront area. It’s so pretty. Brian and I have yet to bike over there. We definitely should before the summer is over.
So anyway, Brian and Jay returned raving about Mandy’s fancy office building. It was only after they simmered down that we started the movie. So yeah, we were up late.
Tonight is Filipino movie night with Jen and Armando. We are going to try not to stay up too late because we are taking Brian’s parents to the Kansas Cosmosphere in Hutchinson tomorrow.

Are you ready for Eclipse?
Posted on June 22, 2010 by Ching under Movies.
Carly, a friend/coworker of mine, is re-reading Eclipse to get ready for the upcoming movie. I don’t generally re-read books so I’m not doing that. However, I am re-watching both Twilight
and New Moon
, though. That’s happening this Saturday. You’re welcome to join me if you like. 🙂
Another thing you can do to prepare for Eclipse is to read The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, Stephenie Meyer’s new book. It does fill in some gaps. You can read it for free on on the web through July 5. Don’t worry. It’s a relatively short read (about 2-3 hours) because it’s less than 180 pages.
I didn’t intend to finish so quickly when I started reading it on Saturday. We were waiting for Chad to show up so we can carpool to the Phelpi. I just wanted to get started. Several pages into it, I was looking for the end of the chapter so I could use it as my marker. But then, the story just kept going and going and going. No end of chapter in sight.
I even told Brian how I thought the book was weird because I was 100 pages into it and I still hadn’t hit a chapter. I kept reading thinking that I’d eventually hit the end of the chapter and I never got there. By page 155 I was like, “What the heck?” I finally just stopped and paged forward because I was curious at that point. “How many pages does each chapter consist of?” That’s when I realized that I only had 20 pages to go or so.. Might as well finish it. =P
What about you? Are you ready for Eclipse? What are you doing to get ready?

Old Dogs
Posted on May 15, 2010 by Ching under Family, Movies.
Speaking of old dogs, here’s a picture of me and Pogi. Pogi was our old chocolate lab when we lived on South Valley Stream Drive, mom and dad’s first house in Derby. Actually, that’s their first house ever in the US. Pogi was our first dog in the US. Mom and dad haven’t had another dog since so I guess, he’s the first and only dog they’ve ever had here.
Incidentally, Brian and I watched Old Dogs yesterday. It wasn’t even about dogs at all. LOL. It was about this two old guys played by Robin Williams and John Travolta. I really like Robin Williams and he’s usually hilarious (think The Birdcage
— love that movie). Not so much in this one, though. There were a few laughs, but the movie was just so-so.
Come to think of it, I haven’t seen a really great funny movie in a long time. Do you guys have any recommendations for me? What should I watch next?
