Hairspray

Posted on December 5, 2007 by under Life, Movies, School.

I should really be studying. Instead I am watching Hairspray. I never to a chance to see it in theaters. It’s actually pretty good. Lots of fun. I loved it!

It was a nice break from the craziness that is this week..

  • Monday, I had to turn in book review number two for Marketing Management. The due date was December 3, but we could have turned it in without penaltry through noon on December 10. I didn’t want to do that, though, becuase I had other deadlines.
  • Tuesday, I took Part I of the final exam in FIN 860: Cases in Finance. It only took 30 minutes, but looking back I really should have spent an extra couple of minutes to double-check my math. I think I made some really stupid calculation errors because my WACC is whack! Pun intended! Tee hee! I am a nerd. Not as nerdy as Chad, though. =P
  • Wednesday, would be tonight. I just watched Hairspray and we are now watching Superbad (another movie that we did not get to see in theaters because of my busy schedule). I am taking a much-need break from school work. I really should be studying, though.
  • Thursday, I have to take Part II of the Cases final. Then after that Brett, Chad, Anna, and I turn in our group project in FIN 620: Investments. Tomorrow night is the final class night in for my Thursday classes.
  • Friday, is poker night. Naturally.
  • Saturday, I have my regular every-other-week waxing (now at Beau Monde, previously at Individually Yours but Patricia moved so I moved with her) and then Brian and I are getting an hour-and-a-half couples massage (also at Beau Monde). This is our Christmas to each other. There will be no presents this year. We need a massage more. Stress is bad for your back. At least, it is bad for mine.

Saturday afternoon we are playing in the $1500 poker tourney for BCPT. Brian and I both qualified! Hurrah for us! Brian barely made it. He didn’t qualify until November 30 when he took 8th. It was the last possible day for him to qualify. LOL.

  • Sunday, this will be my day to work on my individual project for Investments. Hopefully, I can get a lot of it done. Otherwise the rest of the coming week will be spent working on it until the due date. I would really hate to be working on this project all of next week. Ugh. Miserable.
  • Monday, I take the final in Marketing Management. I need to find some time between now and then and squeeze some studying time in my busy schedule so I don’t completely bomb the exam. I really want to get an A.

Life is pretty boring. Mainly it’s just work, school, homework, poker. That’s pretty much it, with a few movies squeezed in. Hopefully, we can find time on Saturday night or Sunday night to celebrate my 3.875 GPA before it comes crashing down. Just kidding. If I don’t get any Bs this sem, it will actually go up to a 3.90 so cross your fingers for me. I am so looking forward to the end of this sem already!

Johnny Depp is Back

Posted on November 30, 2007 by under Movies, Sponsored Post.

Johnny Depp strikes again with another dark film by Tim Burton. He’s come a long, long way from his days on 21 Jump Street. That’s for sure!

Of all the films that he has done I would have to say that Captain Jack Sparrow is my favorite character. I love the witty banter that he does throughout the movie and the perpetual drunken swagger is a riot! I saw in a behind the scenes show one time and he said that he modeled his swagger after Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. I found that funny since he played Jack’s dad in the last film! He also beats Yoda at talking in circles. For example, take this line “Me? I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It’s the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly… stupid.” He said that in one of the scenes in the first “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Captain Jack Sparrow always had the best lines!

Another great film is “Edward Scissorhands.” This dark film by Tim Burton was a masterpiece of story telling and visual stunning. It paired darkness with the holidays and opened the doors to a new genera of holiday films. In this film Johnny played a man made being that was incomplete. His creator had died before he was able to finish his hands, so instead of normal fingers he had these scissors. It was brilliant how they showed how complicated it would be to have a disfigurement or some sort of impairment and how society hates anything that is different or they don’t understand. The only down fall to the movie was that Johnny didn’t really have any lines to speak and when he did speak it was very short and usually consisted of about 3 words but he made it all up in body movement and facial expression. Tim Burton’s new film “Sweeney Todd” looks to be another Dark Holiday hit like “Edward Scissorhands” but this time we have Johnny singing and dancing in this film. The new film has that dark edge and gripping story and interwoven humor that is a trademark of Tim Burton. Looking at the previews you can tell that this story was written with Johnny Depp in mind as the lead character. There are several places you can go to see the new previews, you can visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site where you will find the trailers, film stills backgrounds and wallpapers. For you MySpace junkies you can visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace and list him as your friend. I am really looking forward to seeing this film on December 21st I think it will be one of the Holiday Hits to see.

Online Dating Services

Posted on November 14, 2007 by under Life, Movies, Sponsored Post.

Years ago it was taboo to have an online personal ad. Nowadays it is perfectly acceptable. Many happily married couples have started their relationships by first meeting through an online dating service of some sort. Movies like You’ve Got Mail romanticize online dating; while movies like Must Love Dogs and Because I Said So show that it is perfectly acceptable to meet someone through an online dating service specially if you weren’t the one who posted the ad.

For a lot of people, posting an online personal ad (or any type of personal ad) is still an icky prospect. Understandably so. There are so many pervs and wackos out there. Putting yourself out there, on the Internet, is pretty scary. You’ll never know what types of people you’ll run into. So even though the popularity of online dating services has grown at an exponential rate and society has become more accepting of this practice, I understand why so many people still hesitate.

Enter Prime Dating Sites. Prime Dating Sites reduces some of the risks of posting an online personal ad by providing reviews and information about the various online dating sites. This way you are able to select the matchmaking service that best suits your personality and lifestyle.

For example, someone looking for fun and excitement will be better served by certain online dating services; while individuals looking for serious relationships and possibly marriage are ideal candidates for eHarmony’s matchmaking service.

In the movie Must Love Dogs Sarah’s sister Carol put her profile on Perfect Match. A review of Perfect Match is available on Prime Dating Sites also. Prime Dating Sites is really helpful for singles who want to harness the power of the Internet in their search for friends, dates, or future life partners. Perhaps the only thing that maybe they could do different is post a comparison page of the different matchmaking services so that you could easily compare each side-by-side instead of having to click on every single review.

Anyway, I thought I would share this useful web site to all of our single blog readers. More power to you all!

The Mist

Posted on November 6, 2007 by under Movies, Sponsored Post.

I was watching TV the other day and I came across the preview for The Mist by Stephen King. I am a big fan of Stephen King and grew up with a lot of his books and movies. The guy knows terror thats for sure. This movie is no different. It stars Thomas Jane (from the new “Punisher” movie) and is about an other worldly mist that falls on a small town. The residents are trapped in a grocery store while they determine what is to be done. In the mean time the town starts to divide and one group is of the belief that the mist is nothing while the other group is on the other extreme and believes that the mist is a sign from God and wants to sacrifice a child to appease the lord. Thomas Jane’s character and his family seem to be caught in the middle of it all and have the only rational minds in the whole town! Things soon escalate when the creatures that are in the mist try to get into the store so that they can eat the tasty morsels that reside with in it, kind of like getting to the cream filling in a Twinkie, lol! It kind of reminded me of this time that I was moving back from Tennessee! I was driving up this tall hill in Arkansas and it was raining, the higher I got the harder it seemed to rain, like something was telling me that I shouldn’t be trying to climb this hill. I was carrying a trailer on the back of my car and the weight of that combined with the slick road was making me slide backwards. I decided to pull over till the storm passed. While I was sitting there I noticed that there were no cars on the road. I thought to myself “How can this be, this is a major highway, cars should be just rolling by”. However, this was not the case, for about 30 min I sat their and waited for the rain to stop. Finally I noticed it letting up a little and decided to head out. I started up the hill but still no cars. It wasn’t till I reached the other side of the hill that I noticed all the oncoming cars sitting on the side of the road. because of the windows being fogged over I didn’t notice the cars behind me till I vented the car and got the windows clear. Seems everyone else had the same idea. But in that thirty minute stretch my mind was playing with some strange thoughts of other worldly dimensions and transportation to parallel universes. It was freaky but it reminds me of this movie. I am curious to see if this is all just a figment of there imaginations or if this is something that is truly going to destroy us all.

The End of an Unproductive Weekend

Posted on September 23, 2007 by under Movies, Poker.

Brian and I just got home from watching Dragon Wars with his dad. What a horrible movie! I feel bad for asking to see it. I wish that I would have looked at reviews first. I could have saved two hours of my life that I will never get back. What’s up with all the stupid movies lately? We really should have gone to see Resident Evil instead. Brian didn’t want to fight the crowds, though. I didn’t think it would be crowded, but what do I know. Maybe we can go see it in a couple of weeks.

By the way, Brian and I had an interesting weekend. We went to celebrate Darcy’s fifth service anniversary, but ended up leaving early because I misread the time. I thought my watch said 6:30 PM but it was only 5:30 PM. Brian said it was okay because his head was starting to hurt from the smoke and loud music anyway. I wasn’t too pleased about the mistake, though, because we could have hung out a little bit longer and I really didn’t want to get to poker too early.

Brian said that I could use the time to read my book. Sounds like a good idea in theory, but it doesn’t always work. I really don’t like going to poker early because strange people end up talking to me and I don’t end up getting much read. Don’t get me wrong. We know a lot of wonderful people at poker with whom I enjoy chatting. However, I really didn’t feel like talking to anyone right at that moment. I just wanted to be left alone to read my book in peace.

Brian’s solution? He said he’d let me stay in the truck and read until it is closer to the start of the tournament. We turned off the truck and rolled the windows down. Just as I opened my book to start reading, Brian started blabbering on about stuff. “Baby,” I said, “You’re being like the annoying people I’m trying to avoid.” He stopped because he realized what he was doing. “You promised me I could read in peace,” I reminded him.

I got through two pages before I got disturbed again. This weirdo in the other car four parking spaces down (there were no cars in between his car and ours unfortunately) starts trying to make conversation. I smiled, nodded, turned my attention back to my book, and prayed that he would get the hint to leave me alone. It was a welcome relief when he finally gave up conversing with me and walked into the building. Even in the parking lot you can’t avoid them.

Having given up reading, Brian and I decided to just go in. It was a pretty crazy night at poker. Usually, I end up playing with mostly normal people. A little before break our table got broken up. Chris moved me to a table with a girl tweaked out on meth to my right and Lotto Man to my left. It was bad. “Chris must hate me,” I joked at Brian. Chris is the tournament director.

A few hands in, I ended up with pocket queens. I went all-in pre-flop. Lotto Man, living up to his name, called me with 10d 8d while declaring “Let’s dance.” Another guy called me with queen jack. I don’t think he would’ve called if it weren’t for Lotto Man’s call, but whatever. Maybe he didn’t believe I had a hand. Who knows? I had Lotto covered, but guy had me covered. Lotto hits a straight. Guy ends up tripping his jacks on the river. Go figure. The girl with the best hand gets knocked out. Stupid, stupid, stupid. It sucked to get knocked out before break, but it was a bit of a blessing to finally get away from that table. I could finally read my book in peace.

Of course, I still didn’t get much reading done because I ran into Big Rick who was already out also. Him, I didn’t mind talking to. I didn’t start reading until after he left to go play a sit-n-go. Not much progress, though, because Brian got knocked out of the tourney shortly after. Such is our poker rut.

Next week we will forgo poker in favor of the Final Fridays art crawl. It’s time to do something different.
