Daytripping at Legends Mall

As you all know, Brian and I are pretty fond of daytripping. This time we went to Legends Mall to hang out for the afternoon. I needed some new work clothes anyway and I figured there would be some good Labor Day sales so off we went.

We got there in time to miss the lunch rush at Dave & Buster’s. Brian and I just ended up sharing everything as we normally do. We shared the philly steak egg rolls (which is surprisingly good by the way; I’m not sure why more people don’t serve it on their menu), had the gold fingers as a $23.99 “eat and play” combo, and then had the chocolate fondue for dessert. We couldn’t finish all of our food, but it was a pretty good deal. Even after the additional cost of the “eat and play” the cost was still no more than dinner at a nice place so we were pretty happy. And since the combo gave us $20 worth of credits, our chicken fingers really only cost us $3.99 when you think about it. Not a bad deal at all.

We had a blast at Dave & Buster’s. We played several games. I played this zombie shooting game with Brian and totally sucked at it. He kept dying trying to save me so I actually ended up outlasting him the first time. The second time I told him not to worry about me and naturally I died before he did.

At first he didn’t want to play Time Crisis with me because he said “It takes a lot of coordination and you’re not good at that.” You have to step on the pedal to peek, shoot bad guys, shoot off the screen to reload, step off the pedal and click to change guns — you know, that sort of thing. We did play it a few times and he was right. I was horrible at it. I think I spent most of the time hiding than shooting. LOL.

I did kick his ass at Virtual Tennis, though! I totally dominated him at that game. I was rushing the net and everything. Of course, when he was channel surfing last night he came across the Jankovic-Bammer match and he quickly pointed out that they weren’t rushing the net like I was. “They just don’t know the strategy,” I told him boastfully. Hey, let me bask in the glory of my victory. It’s not very often that I can beat Brian at a video game.

Anyway, we played a whole bunch of different games. We gave our tickets away to random kids. I just wish we had a D&B here in Wichita. I would totally live there. Although, I really wouldn’t mind doing another daytrip like that again. The drive was nice and relaxing. Of course, I can say this because I didn’t have to drive. And I actually got some reading done. I finished my Marketing Insights book.

We celebrated Mom B’s 55th birthday today by having dinner at Logan’s Roadhouse. The food was actually quite impressive. The dinner rolls were great, steak was good, and the ribs were fall-off-the bone delish! The menu prices are reasonable too.

Brian and I shared the pick three combo and got the bayou popcorn shrimp appetizer, 6 oz. steak, half rack of ribs, two sides and the nutty fudgeslide for only $16.99. Our drinks (Brian got soda per usual because he can’t drink and I got a raspberry ice tea and a roadhouse tea) were extra of course, but it was still a bargain. Even after sharing our meal, we still had leftovers. We were stuffed. Grandma and grandpa ended up taking the leftover ribs home.

Brint’s Diner

Sandi at Brint's Diner

We finally got a chance to eat at Brint’s Diner. We’d been dying to check out the place ever since we saw them featured on the first episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on The Food Network. The first time we went they were closed. We didn’t get a chance to return again until Saturday.

We went there after my waxing and before running errands. I had two eggs, corned beef hash, hashbrowns, and toast. Brian had the one-two-three (one egg, two strips of bacon, and three fluffy pancakes) and a side of hashbrowns. The food was alright. It reminds me of the food at the diner we ate at in Peabody, though not quite as good. The service was okay. I think the nostalgia or novelty is what brings people back. And, of course, Sandi — she’s super nice.

You can tell that most of the patrons are regulars. They all know each other by name. Though, business has picked up considerably since the airing of the TV episode so there are more non-regulars now. Brian and I being prime examples.

It’s funny how we never even knew the place existed, and we probably never would have had it not been for The Food Network. Brian’s dad is familiar with the place, though. He’d dined there several times before. It’s a hole in the wall that is tucked behind a bread shop so it’s kind of hard to find. Also not in the best neighborhood so it’s not really the kind of place you invite people to.

I think Brian and I will probably return. We still have to try the other menu items.

Vacation Home Rentals

Posted on August 10, 2007 by under Flickr, Sponsored Post, Travel.

Someone's Private Beach House

While vacationing at an all-inclusive resort offers many benefits such as endless amounts of food, bottomless drinks, and maid service, it doesn’t really offer a lot of privacy. Granted, most resorts offer some romantic places for couples to enjoy. At COR for instance, they had several private jacuzzis hidden in the garden path. They are covered by lush vegetation so that does afford you some privacy. However, there’s nothing to keep other people from ignoring the occupied sign. The only place truly private is your room.

For couples who want more privacy, renting a guest house, villa, or vacation home might be a better option. Then you have the entire property to yourself. When we went on the glass-bottom boat tour, we actually saw several of these properties along the coast. The tour guide calls them guest houses. There was also one right next to COR. They are all beautiful. Some have their own swimming pools and jacuzzis. Some have gazebos. And all of them have ocean access.

Our room was on the far end of the resort building so we could see the pool area of the guest house next door from our balcony. At first we thought that the area was part of the resort and we were trying to figure out how to get there. But the next day we noticed there were some kids swimming in the pool. That’s when we realized it was a totally separate property.

The one pictured above is farther down the coast. It is probably my favorite out of all the ones we saw during our trip. Our tour guide said it is owned by an American. Most of these properties are available for rent. You can even find information about them online.

I think vacation homes are a brilliant idea. It’s even better if you are going as a group. Most homes will accommodate several people, which is great because then you can split the rental cost several ways. This is probably the way to go if you are looking for a great family vacation at minimal cost.

I’ll probably pitch this idea to mom and dad. You know I’ve never been to Disney and they’ve got great vacation rentals in the Disney area. These Disney vacation rentals are packed with great features and amenities. The best thing is you pick the property that suits your needs. I think it would be great for all of us, including the kiddos, to go on vacation together.

From browsing the different properties around the Disney area, I found this one. Check out the pictures. It is a beautiful property with lots to offer. Mom and dad, are you reading this? You guys want to go to Disney?

Dinner and Bowling

Posted on June 23, 2007 by under Family, Flickr.

Dinner and bowling tonight was a lot of fun. It turned out better than I expected.

Last month, Brian and I received a free dinner certificate from Kobe. It was addressed to Brian for his birthday. Neither of us could figure out how they got his information. I mean, they knew his name, date of birth, and our address — that’s a lot of detail considering that it has been a few years since we’ve been there.

When Jen was over picking up some clothes last weekend, I mentioned to her that Brian and I would be dining at Kobe’s sometime to redeem his free birthday dinner certificate. She thought it would be a great opportunity for everyone to get together. Mom had mentioned getting together for some bowling so we all agreed to do it on the same night.

Before we knew it, there was twelve of us going to dinner. Brian’s parents came, Chad, Ray, Jen, Jan, Carla, Paul, mom, and dad all came. I was actually amazed that we got dad to come out. He usually doesn’t ever leave the house. Dinner was great. The food was pretty good and our chef wasn’t bad either. Probably the only thing that could’ve made it better was if I were able to drink. 😉

Jan didn’t go to the Alley with the rest of us because one of the puppy buyers was potentially coming over that evening to get Tips and Walnut. Donna and Carla decided not to bowl, but the rest of us did. I was actually surprised that dad decided to bowl. He gave up bowling a couple of years ago. I guess he couldn’t just sit and watch. He rented shoes and found himself a house ball. It was fun. Dad had the highest score on the first game (amazing considering he was using a house ball), and Ray had the highest score on the second game. Ray almost bowled a 200, but even though he didn’t (he ended up scoring a 184) he still smoked everyone.

I didn’t do too badly considering it has been at least three years since I bowled last. My first game was a 134 and my second game was a 154, so I bowled about my average. Mom is right, you don’t really lose it. It’s just like riding a bike.

I think I’d like to get into bowling again. When I get out of school and I have more spare time, maybe. It would be fun to join a league… Or maybe just bowl for fun more often than once every three years. I probably won’t be going to the Alley for bowling, though. Their rates are much higher than everyone else’s.

Anyway, it’s a thought.
