Worst Weather Ever

Posted on June 5, 2008 by under Life.

I had written about two summertime, outdoor date ideas on Cheap Dates (our other blog) and guess what. Suddenly the sky is falling. We are having the worst weather we’ve had in decades. I must have jinxed us or something.

I’m guessing that no one is doing either right now. What a crummy Thursday. Specially for me. Brian’s flight was supposed to arrive at 5:19 PM this afternoon. The plan was for me to pick him up at the airport right after work. Well, he’s stuck in Chicago.

He’s been at the Chicago airport since early today. His original layover was for two hours. The two hours has turned into several and here I am at home watching the weather, while he’s still at the Chicago airport. He’s been there since 1:00 PM. Ugh.

So his original flight was delayed and they said the flight would leave at 5:02 PM, which would put him here in Wichita about 7:00 PM. He was really upset about that, but I told him that wouldn’t be a problem. I will be at the airport to pick him up.

Then he called me back and told me that the flight was rescheduled to 4:30 PM, which would put him here at 6:30 PM. I told him I would just head right to the airport instead of coming home first and I’ll just read my book while waiting for him. No biggie.

Well around 4:00 PM, right as they were getting ready to board an airline rep shows up and blanks out the display. He said she told everyone that the flight has been canceled and to go see customer service. He was livid. I know because he called me very upset. I had to explain to him the kind of weather we are expecting and that it wouldn’t be safe for anyone to be up in the air. I’d much rather that he arrive tomorrow than not arrive at all. I told him to check with customer service and call me back.

Later he told me that he can get on a flight that leaves Chicago at around 8:45 PM, which means I’m picking him up at the airport around 10:45 PM. So far that’s still the plan, unless the airline changes their mind. We’re on a tornado watch until 8:00 PM and a severe weather alert until about 1:00 AM, so I’m not sure how that will be possible. We’ll see what happens.

It was crazy. I was driving home int he middle of it. I decided that no cop was going to stop me in the middle of THAT kind of weather for doing 80 down Rock ( I was already out of Wichita ). What’s interesting is the people behind me seemed to like the idea because they were following me at about the same speed. I pulled into the drive and ran in a shortly after we got hailed on. So one huge thunder storm later we have 2 major cracks in the Jeep’s windshield which will have to wait until at least after Logan’s birthday.

So, in my little seating there in Jeep Arena, I have the wonderful and ALWAYS welcome “Obs View” Watching out drivers because I can KINDA see you 🙂
