What Marriage is All About

Posted on July 15, 2006 by under Life.

Brian and Ching

With our 4th anniversary coming up, I figured that I would post one of the photos we took while celebrating our 3rd anniversary last year.

When people ask me how long Brian and I have been together, they often can’t believe my response. They can’t believe that we’ve been married for almost four years and that we’ve been together for seven. One of the most common comments we receive from people is about how we still act like newlyweds after all these years. It amazes us too, considering that many of the couples who were wed about the same time we were are now all divorced.

I think the difference between us and other couples is that other couples view marriage as a source of oppression; whereas Brian and I have a more positive view of marriage.

Marriage is about having a permanent companion.. Your partner is supposed to complete you and complement you.. It is about having someone to spend time with, watching movies or just hanging around the house.. Marriage is having someone to give you massages without being paid.. Although if you expect to continue to receive massages, you have to be willing to give some too. ; )

Marriage is having someone to cheer you up when you are down… Having someone laugh at your unfunny jokes and listen to your bad beat stories.. It’s about making love without having to shave your legs first.. Marriage is about liberation and not at all about oppression. Marriage gives you the freedom to be yourself without the fear of being dumped.

Hurray for happy marriages!!!!

I think the key in a really happy marriage is when you prefer your spouse’s company above all others. Lots of humor and laughter, fun, and communication. Communication is cliche but that humor and fun part, I’ve noticed that a lot of couples don’t have that. I see it in you and Brian though!
