Shuffleboard Anyone?

Posted on June 11, 2005 by under Poker.

We finally got around to assembling the shuffleboard table that Brian won at Fingers last year. It had been in the garage all this time, which might not have been the wisest storage idea. The extreme temperatures in the garage caused the adhesive to loosen and now, even though this is the first time that we’ve ever that we are taking the table out of the box, the laminate is kind of peeling off on one side. As luck (or lack thereof) would have it, we can’t find the superglue.

That stuff really annoys me and I am this close to using Elmer’s glue! Brian pleads that I leave it alone, though, lest I make things worse than they are.

I remember for months after he won the shuffleboard table he used to hold it over my head. We both know who the better poker player is, but since he had won something substantial and I had not (my APL points were the only proof I had of my poker prowess, and that doesn’t really mean anything to most people) he thought that counted for something. So we kept it in the garage for a couple of reasons. One, we really had no idea where to put it in the house if we were to assemble it and two, I really didn’t want to be reminded that he’d won it. His incessant bragging was reminder enough.

Now that I’ve won the coveted poker chip set, we are on even footing so I’m no longer threatened by the shuffleboard table. I have something material to show for my poker ability now too. Brian and I are pretty competitive when it comes to poker. We are always trying to out-do one another, but it’s great because it’s what pushes us to the next level.

Anyway, the reason why we finally put the shuffleboard table together is because Brian is having his first ever private poker game. I have been vehemently against it all this time, but I figured since it’s his birthday weekend I would be agreeable and let him have his way. We figured that as people get knocked out they’ll want to find something to do. With the shuffleboard table, they’ve got lots of options (playing XBOX, PS2, PSP, getting on the internet, watching a movie/tv just to name a few) in between the first and second poker sessions.

Brian, who has lots of experience with getting knocked out early, can relate and he wants to make sure that no one gets bored. So if someone is knocked out of the game on the first hand (Chad ~ LOL! ~ you know you will never be able to live this down) and says they’re bored because they’ve got nothing to do it’s their own fault!
