Quotables from this Weekend

Posted on October 4, 2010 by under Family.

Being cooped up in the car with mom, Jenni and Brian for ten hours (twenty if count the return trip) was quite interesting. I did most of the driving. Brian took his turn, but neither Jenni nor mom drove. Jenni mostly just slept through everything. Mom stayed awake and talked to me to keep me alert. At times when the four of us were awake, we had some pretty funny conversations.

Mom was trying to tell me to drive safely because I had very important people in the car with us, including myself.

MOM: Drive carefully because you have valuable cargo.

JENNI: What? The apple butter?

ME: I thought you said it only cost five bucks.

There are times that we’re not on the same wave length. LOL.

Here’s another one that was about my lack of singing talent…

MOM: You should get a voice coach.

ME: Why?

MOM: If you’re going to insist on singing, you’ll need to learn how.

BRIAN: Wow. Even your own mom thinks your singing is awful!

There’s Always a State Fair Going On Somewhere

Posted on October 3, 2010 by under Life, Things to Do, Travel.

I got a chance to talk to Sheryll yesterday afternoon. She’s back from her short trip to the Philippines. She told me about her trip and also about what she and her family are up to these days.

I guess the kids got some free passes to the State Fair of Texas at school, so they’ve been wanting to go to that. I think they’re going sometime this week.

That got me to thinking about our own state fair in Kansas, which my friend Misty and I volunteered for again this year. I didn’t really get to do any browsing since we’ve been so busy this year. I barely had enough time that weekend to actually work the shift that I volunteered for (Brian and I have got a lot of stuff going on right now). Brian came to the fair with Misty and me. He actually got to walk around and check things out and take pictures.

Brian has always had this idea in his head about the demographic of people who regularly attend the state fair. What can I say? He’s a little prejudiced. Anyway, he wanted to do a web site devoted to “fair creatures” much like the People of Walmart web site. Much to his disappointment, he couldn’t find the “strange” people that he thought would be so abundant at the state fair. I think I’ve finally convinced him that a lot of “normal” people go to the state fair. The web site idea is pretty much nixed at this point. Besides, what could we do with it the rest of the year? The state fair barely runs two weeks; unlike the one in Texas, which runs for almost a month.

I had mentioned to Sheryll that their state fair is probably a lot like our state fair, and how you could probably spend an entire day there and not be able to see everything. While that’s true, I really had no idea what I was talking about. I’d only been to our state fair here and have never experienced the State Fair of Texas first hand. After checking their web site, I realized that it’s similar but it is not the same. Their state fair runs for almost a month and there’s so much more to see and do! I might ask Brian to take me next year just so I can see for myself. The bonus for him is that he might finally get to snap some photos of those highly elusive “fair creatures” – LOL.

Anyway, I got to thinking that there’s always a state fair going on somewhere so that’s what we could do with the web site for the rest of the year. Outside of the Kansas State Fair time frame, we can post pictures of “fair creatures” from other state fairs going on around the nation! And here you all thought, I wasn’t a supportive wife… I will try to support all of Brian’s ideas, no matter how crazy and hair-brained they are. I love you, baby!

P.S. I was thinking of filing this under “Cheap Date” also, but decided against it. If any of you have ever been to a state fair anywhere, then you probably known that going to the state fair is far from cheap. LOL.

P.P.S. Now that I’ve posted this, someone will probably beat us to starting our stupid blog/web site idea. Booo!

Salsa Fridays with Brian and Ching

Posted on October 2, 2010 by under Date Ideas, Things to Do.

A couple of months ago, Brian took me out to dinner and dancing for our eighth wedding anniversary. It was a lot of fun. Shortly after we learned that some of Brian’s coworkers were into salsa dancing as well. We made plans to go out dancing again, but with others (instead of just the two of us) this time around.

We started the evening by getting dance instruction at the Harry Reese Dance Studio, and then we all went to Suede afterward to practice the moves we’d learned. Brian and I had a blast and agreed that we want salsa Fridays to be a regular thing. Except we haven’t been able to go in the last couple of weeks because things just kept coming up. Last weekend Tita Sol asked us to watch Molly while she was in Nebraska. We don’t get to watch Molly very often so whenever the opportunity comes up, we always cancel all of our plans and clear our entire schedule for to spend time with her. This weekend we’re out of town for Richard and Amy’s wedding.

I’m really looking forward to resuming salsa Fridays. I actually bought a couple of new dresses to wear to the club. I’m thinking we’ll be able to go this coming Friday, October 8. You all should come join us! Drop me a line (either in the comments section of this post, on Twitter/Facebook, or via email/text) if you’re interested and I will send you directions to both the dance studio and the club. See you all there!

I’ve Created a Monster

Posted on October 2, 2010 by under Life.

I know I promised stories from Zoobilee, but things have been really hectic this week and I haven’t had a chance to post anything. Zoobilee is such old news at this point, I’m thinking that’s it’s pretty pointless to write about it. I do have to say that it was a lot of fun, as always. It’s a shame Jay and Becca couldn’t make it this year. They were having fun on their cruise, though, so I’m sure they did their fair share of drinking.

I guess the biggest story from Zoobilee this year is that it’s where Brian realized that he can actually drink wine. He drank a whole bunch of wine that night and didn’t have any kind of allergic or metabolic reaction. Brian, who has not drank any kind of alcoholic beverage in almost fifteen years, had an epiphany. He realized that night that he can drink wine and our lives have changed ever since.

These days we have a glass of wine almost every time we have dinner. We used to not stock any kind of alcoholic drinks at home, but now that Brian can drink we have quite a selection of stuff. It’s great for company because now we can offer our house guests something besides water to drink. LOL.

P.S. For those guests who want to make Brian’s day, bring a bottle of wine next time you come over. Brian’s favorite variety is shiraz. 😉
