Farewell to Nahola

Today will be the last day of Nahola as Nahola. It makes me so sad to think about it. Even though I’ve only been a member a little over a year, I quickly grew attached to this place. It was my “go to” spot for pickleball on weekends. I think several others felt the same way, specially the retired pickleball players who were playing there on a daily basis during the day.
For those who don’t know, Nahola was started in 2014 by three visionary women: Nancy, Holly, and Kayla (thus, Nahola). They originally had just one pickleball court with gym floors in the main building. In 2017, based on the popularity of the sport with the fitness center members, they added an auxiliary building with two pickleball courts on an outdoor surface.

For the next few years, Nahola quickly became the premier place to play pickleball and was the training ground for some of the best pickleball players in our city. It was common knowledge that one of the best ways to improve and get better at pickleball was to join and play at Nahola. Nahola had well-established pickleball leagues with long waiting lists even before Chicken N Pickle entered the market.
Over the course of my year and a half long membership, I was able to participate in a few leagues and special events like their team tournaments (November 2021, August 2020). I played in a couple of their women’s leagues — once when it was held on Saturdays and most recently the Sunday one.
This is a short video I made of our very last day of the very last women’s league. Several players were out of town that weekend so we only had eight ladies (four teams) in our league tournament. It was a lot of fun but bittersweet.
Kayla runs the league and keeps track of each player’s performance throughout the league and then on tournament day you get paired up based on your record. Fong and I ended up getting paired up. Fong was also one of my teammates in MLP so this was kind of a reunion. Fong is a fierce competitor who is super aggressive and, as former tennis player, has shots that I cannot do so her style of play complements mine really well. I was super excited that we got to team up.
We played round robin first before going into single-elimination bracket play. We had an excellent record, only losing to Heather and Krystal. In the bracket play, we ended up having to play Amy and Huyen. Though we had already defeated them in pool play, we ended up losing in bracket play so we didn’t advance to the finals.
The finals came down to Amy and Huyen versus Heather and Krystal (the two winningest players of our session). This match up was made even more interesting by the fact that Huyen and Krystal (who normally play together as fierce women’s doubles duo) were having to play against one another.
Heather and Krystal reigned supreme and went completely undefeated that day. The two of them have been on fire the entire session, battling it out of the number one spot. Except the week before tournament, Krystal got some losses and Huyen was on fire that day and ended up sneaking in to take the lead.
I’ve been keeping track of how everyone was doing too and, by my tally, Huyen had the greatest win rate and most wins out of everyone; followed by Amy, Heather, and Krystal in a three-way tie for second. So it really could have been anyone’s game.
These ladies are so talented that it’s fun to watch them play but it’s even more fun to play with against them. I have really enjoyed playing in this league and will miss it immensely. These ladies will forever hold a special place in my heart.
I’m talking like we’re all gone forever. LOL. I really hope we can have a similar league like this somewhere. It was really fun and it helped my women’s doubles game significantly. Here is a group of photo of these great bunch of women:

Anyway, the new owners will be taking over after today and will reopen next week as the Pickle Club. So far, there aren’t any compelling reasons for me to join so we’ll have to wait and see. Until then, GNG.

Pickleball Birthday Party at Chicken N Pickle

Cindy Witte, one of our pickleball friends, hosted a surprise 60th birthday for her husband Joe at Chicken N Pickle on Saturday night. It was absolutely perfect!
As you can see from the video above, I think he was truly surprised.
Cindy invited a bunch of friends (most of them pickleball players) to help surprise him. She rented all of the indoor courts and even had a DJ (another pickleball friend, Jeff) for the private event.
Jeff Kenworthy, DJ extraordinaire, played fun tunes for us all night long. He even got Joe to sing a Sinatra song! If you are looking for someone to DJ or host karaoke or just play background music at your event, Jeff is your guy. You can reach him at oneheavenlypeace@aol.com.
Lisa Laham did a great job with the cupcakes and her husband helped with the balloons. They did such a fabulous job of making the place look festive for the birthday party.
The wooden paddles were not just great signs but also made for great cupcake trays. Kudos to whoever made them. They were brilliant!

Anyway, it was a huge turnout and I am glad I got celebrate his big day with him. Pickleball people are so much fun and Chicken N Pickle is the perfect place to celebrate. Can’t wait until the next birthday celebration!

Galantines 2022

I had such a great time celebrating Galantines Day with my pickleball girlfriends on Sunday. Debbie Fanning organized a great brunch for us ladies at Rain. She even went all out on the decorations.
It was league day so a few of us arrived late. Thankfully, there was plenty of food to be had. The $9.99 brunch buffet included bacon, sausage, eggs, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, french toast, fresh fruit, and a variety of dessert options.
The ladies brought all sorts of Valentines treats to share.
We had a wonderful turnout.
I had such a great time celebrating with these ladies.

Gearing Up for Picklemania

My Rotary club has started gearing up for our second annual pickleball tournament. Last year we hosted our first one out of necessity. Because of the pandemic, we had to cancel our main fundraising even in 2020. Since we could not have Haus of Brews, and we had to figure out a way to raise money for our club projects, we decided to host a pickleball tournament. We originally planned it for May 2021 but it ended up getting rescheduled to June 2021 due to rain. We are hoping that the weather will cooperate and we will be able to hold our event on our selected date this year.
Last year our club funded the event on its own. This year we are partnering with local companies so it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.
Another significant change is in the format. Last year we opted for a more traditional tournament with social and competitive brackets in the morning, social and competitive brackets in the afternoon, and lunch served in between. Everyone got plenty of games in because we did round robin plus bracket play.
This year, we are still feeding lunch and including free drinks and everyone will still get lots of pickleball play, but we are going to a team-style tournament so it’s going to be even more fun.
Ever since I participated in the MLP-style team tournament at Chicken N Pickle last December, I’ve been toying with the idea of hosting a team tournament. I presented the idea to the other two members of the pickleball tournament planning team (Chris McGill and Ryan De Santis) and they approved it. I am super excited!
We couldn’t do full-on MLP because, when we did it at CNP, the matches lasted almost an hour and a half on average and we don’t have that kind of time. So we modified it a bit so that there are only three games per match for the round robin matches — women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles — and best two of three games (same format) for the bracket play.
The twist is that for the mixed doubles game, it’s going to be “wrestlemania” style. So you can tag-in and tag-out team members during the timeouts, as long as the resulting combo is still one male and female. It is mixed doubles after all.
During the round robin portion, the plan is for all three games to be played that way everyone will get to experience the mixed doubles “wrestlemania” format. We will keep track of the number of wins and use that to determine the seeding for the single elimination bracket tournament in the afternoon.
In bracket play, we will do best two of three — so the mixed doubles game could potentially be skipped if one team wins both the women’s doubles and men’s doubles games. This is to save time so that the tournament doesn’t run so late. Anyway, those out of the tournament can continue to eat and drink and just hang out and enjoy. It’s a win-win for everyone.
So far we already have three sponsors committed and I have a few more asks I’m waiting to hear back from. I am really looking forward to the event this year because we are not doing it on our own anymore. We have others willing to partner with us. I think it’s going to be even more fun!

Rotary District 5680 Refugee Project

Kathy Sexton from the Derby Rotary Club spoke to our club last week to talk about the Rotary District 5680 refugee project. Our nine area Rotary clubs are partnering with the Wichita office of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to help resettle hundreds of families fleeing Afghanistan and other crisis zones.
IRC helps refugees find homes, jobs, English classes, and connects them with resources to help them transition to their new environment. Refugees often arrive with nothing and need dishes, furniture, and other items for their new home.
The Rotary clubs in our District have committed to providing and assembling dinnerware, kitchen, cookware, and bathroom kits consisting of new and gently used items, and transporting kits, vacuums, and other household items. We are asking everyone for help in putting together these kits.
- Dinnerware Kit: 8 place settings of dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, drinking glasses, mugs/teacups, and silverware
- Kitchen Kit: 3 mixing bowls, 3+ kitchen knives, 3 cutting boards, 3+ plastic/glass storage containers, can opener, dish drying rack, 3+ cooking utensils, 2 oven mitts, 2 towels
- Cookware Kit: 3+ pots and pans, stockpot, 3+ bakeware, tea kettle
- Bathroom Kit: shower curtain, curtain rod and package of shower hooks, toilet brush and plunger, toothbrush holder, wastebasket
If you are downsizing or minimizing, then this is a great opportunity to put extra items that you no longer need to good use. Please consider donating items listed above that you no longer use. There is an immediate need as we are expecting hundreds of refugees to arrive in Wichita the coming weeks.
The IRC in Wichita is currently located at 1530 S. Oliver Suite 270 but they will be moving their office to a new location sometime in February. The IRC accepts kits Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. You an reach them at (316) 351-5495 or volunteerks@rescue.org to let them know that you’re coming by to drop off a donation.
If those days do not work for you, you can also deliver your donation to BRG Precision Products at 600 River Street (Derby, KS) through February 11. BRG can accept donations Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It’s best to call them ahead of time at (316) 788-2000 to notify them that you’re dropping of a donation. They will give you parking/drop off instructions based on when you’re arriving to ensure that there are no conflicts with their normal business operations and other deliveries.
On Presidents Day (Monday, February 21), Rotarians will gather at the BRG office from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM to assemble all the donations received into the kits listed above. BRG will provide boxes, bubble wrap, and packing materials. Rotarians will deliver the completed kits to IRC on Saturday, February 26.
