I Rock
Posted on October 21, 2004 by Ching under Poker, School.
I freakin’ rock! That’s all there is to it!
I was telling Brian just now (after I got task 2 of programming assignment 4 to work; it’s an amortization schedule program) that the reason why I always procrastinate is that I work better under pressure. I probably spent three hours total on both task 1 (a stopwatch program) and task 2 together and they both look pretty damn good to me.
Yesterday was a day of immaculate procrastination. I went to work and, instead of coming home to do school work, I went shopping at Express (bought $150 worth of stuff but my team gave me a $40 gift card for Bosses’ Day, so that helped quite a bit). Then I went home to change into clothes I could workout in, met Ashley at the North YMCA, did a 45-minute BOSU workout class with her and then did the 45-minute step class right after and then I played racquetball with Brian to boot!
When Brian arrived at the Y, he told me that Branden’s poker chips were still in my trunk from last Saturday (we’d totally forgotten about them) and we needed to drive over there to bring the chips because Branden’s usual Tuesday night poker game was going to start at 10:30 PM. It was no problem because the YMCA closes at ten anyway. But then, I decided that if I was going over there to bring the poker chips, I might as well stay and play. It was just a $10 buy-in anyway. Unlike the $50 game on Saturday.
You will never believe this! Branden held off starting the session because of a stupid baseball game and so we were there until well after 2:00 AM! I got knocked out by Jason and ended up 5th (stupid river card). I was really ticked because I had to stay up, miss the opportunity to work on my programs, and I had nothing to show for it!
Although..
Brian ended up winning second!
He took home $60, so technically we made (or shall I say HE made) $40 last night (this morning; whatever). But Branden pointed out that since I lost $50 on Saturday, we are technically still in the hole. He took 3rd and I took 4th – and he JUST had to rub it in.
But who’s counting?
We’ve lost so many times playing the Tuesday night $10 buy-ins at his place.. Who cares? It’s fun. Besides, it’s not really so much the money (although the money helps, too) – I just want to freakin’ win!
Speaking of winning, it really irks me that Brian has won first and taken home a prize (the shuffleboard table, remember?) and now he has won second and taken $60 and I haven’t won jack. And yet I’m the BETTER poker player!! Ugh!

VB Exam
Posted on September 28, 2004 by Ching under School.
I totally kicked ass on my VB exam. I thought I did poorly but I got a 102 out of 100! I missed one of the multiple choice questions but I got both of the bonus questions right. Go me.
We got our second assignment back today as well. I got a 50 out of 50 on it. There were minor flaws in the code but he didn’t dock me. I’m not complaining.
The average for the exam was 69 so he offered us the opportunity of earning bonus points. He passed out these pop quizzes and told us to be sure and follow all of the instructions and at the end of three minutes he would collect them all back. After he collected the quizzes, he asked if anyone wrote only their name and nothing else. Everyone answered the three questions on the sheet, I guess, because no one said anything. You should’ve seen the look on everyone’s faces when he said that’s all that we were supposed to do. It was a Kodak moment! I had to bust up laughing. Of course, it didn’t really harm me any because I got a good score. But if I was someone who really needed the five extra points, I guess I would be pretty upset.
Anyway, I talked Brian into taking me to Abuelo’s to celebrate my good fortune! We have no money but good exam scores are a good reason to celebrate so we’re going to celebrate anyway!

Full Day
Posted on September 9, 2004 by Ching under Life, Poker, School.
Today has been a full day — and it’s not even over yet. Stayed up last night to finish my homework. Went to work early. Got there at 7:30 AM. Worked until 5:00 PM. Rushed to WSU for my 5:35 PM Visual Basic .NET class. Got done with class at 6:55 PM or so. Talked to Dave about some software that he wants to use to facilitate our group project..
Rushed home to pick up Brian. Brian and I go to Red Robin to have dinner with his parents, grandparents, Bill, Lisa and kids. After dinner we stop by an Intrust ATM to get cash for a poker game at Brendan’s later tonight. It will only be the second time we’ve played poker for money.
Anyway, we come home. I note today’s expenditures on our checkbook register (it’s in my computer on an Excel spreadsheet because we’re always running out of checkbook registers). Check some email..
I wake up Dave (who is already asleep, I think — I feel so horrible) to ask him about this software, thinking that I might already have it, and I don’t. So now I will meet him tomorrow at school so he can give me the software to install in my computer. I hope it’s as useful as he says it is. I really don’t want to install any more crap on my computer because it’s full of crap as it is.
So anyway, now I’m just blogging while we’re waiting for our 10:30 PM when poker at Brendan’s starts. Brian is playing on UB. I guess he’s practicing. He’ll need it. I plan on playing really well so that I don’t have to pay money out of my own pocket for my bikini wax on Saturday and haircut on Sunday. Heh. Heh.
Let’s hope I win some money!
…
UPDATE: I lost! Boo! Hoo! Good thing the buy-in was only $10! I’ll get them back on Tuesday, though! =P

Summer Pre-Session
Posted on June 5, 2004 by Ching under School.
Taking a summer pre-session class was the dumbest idea I’ve ever had. A three-credit-hour course crammed into two short weeks is definitely not my idea of the best way to start summer. But alas, it was the decision I made. I don’t think I will ever do it again either.
I had class from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM and then I had to work from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM. We were covering anywhere between two to four chapters a day and I couldn’t keep up with the reading. It was totally horrible. The only consolation was that the teacher was really nice and he was really enthusiastic. I think if the class would’ve been taught by anyone else, I would’ve slept through the entire two-week period. Also, he owns Marble Slab Creamery so he took us there for free ice cream yesterday (our last day of class). That was really nice.
Anyway, I recall being relieved at the end of the two-week course. I had planned on sleeping in everyday for the rest of summer. But, lo and behold, my supervisor told me on Friday that I get to start my new nine-to-six shift (which Brian totally predicted, by the way). That’s Mr. Murphy for you.

On Making the Dean’s List
Posted on May 22, 2004 by Ching under School.
Mom and dad, you guys owe me a dinner!
He! He!
Not only did I make the Dean’s Honor Roll this semester, I got As in all of my classes! Yay me! That’s 4.0, baby!
Actually, instead of dinner, I think I will just ask mom and dad to pick up our June ball admission (if they don’t object to it) because it’s $35 per person.
We just got our invitation yesterday. I love getting my own invitation to the June ball. It makes me feel so grown up. I remember for the longest time my invite would come as Mr. and Mrs. Rico Alonso “and kids” and that would mean that Jen and I could come too. Now that I am a “Mrs.” myself, I’ve started receiving my own invitations. It’s pretty exciting.
Anyway, mom and dad, if you are reading this — let me know if my request is a problem. Here is a screen capture of my grades. I will send you an official grade report, if you want! =)
