Reception Crashers
Posted on April 19, 2005 by Ching under School.
I shouldn’t be writing about this, but I can’t help it. I just found it really, really odd. Please don’t hate me.
I went to the Students of Color Academic Achievement Reception this afternoon. I got there a few minutes early. You know me, I’m punctual to a fault.
So anyway, since I got there early, I was able to see everyone pile in and seat themselves. There were lots of black people, some Asian people and some Mexican people. Then these three white people walked in. They didn’t look like college students to me. Actually, they just didn’t fit in at all period.
The group consisted of a pregnant woman who was wearing a shirt so small that half of her belly was showing, a scary looking man who looked just as pregnant as his wife (or at least they looked like husband and wife to me) and then an old gray-haired lady who looked like either his mom or her mom. I couldn’t quite tell whose mom she was.
They had plates of food (mind you, refreshments were supposed to be at the end of the program, AFTER the whole thing was over) and they had the audacity to sit at the very front. They didn’t look like they came with any of the students being recognized and none of them received a certificate so I could only come to one logical conclusion. They came uninvited.
That’s messed up! Find a wedding to crash or something! Oh, yeah. You’d actually have to wear nice clothes to crash a wedding reception.
So anyway, they were eating during the whole program and at the end of the program they went back for more. I was actually polite and kept my food intake to a minimum (two little egg rolls and two cups of punch). I didn’t do this because I’m supposed to be on a diet, I just figured we were supposed to be there to receive our certificates not to scarf the food. The food was an incidental part of the reception.
Honestly, I didn’t even expect that there would be food there. At any rate, these people were still eating when I left. I wouldn’t be surprised if they hung around until all the food was gone. Geez.

End of the Tunnel
Posted on April 4, 2005 by Ching under School.
I’m almost to the end of the tunnel and I’m glad to report that there is light. When I decided to return to school, I kind of looked at things from a glass-half-empty perspective but now I’m more optimistic about everything. The glass is half full and it contains sangria! I met with my advisor today and it seems I’m right on schedule. After this semester is over, I have one more year. With taking a couple of classes this summer and nine credit hours each for this fall and next spring, I’ll actually end up with all of the minors that I’ve been striving for — so I’ll end up with a BBA in Management Information Systems and minors in Accounting, Management and Computer Science. Go me! I completed my degree card and everything so it feels like graduation is just around the corner. I cannot wait! I want a degree already. I feel like such a loser without one.. And even more so because I’m not exactly dumb. I act dumb sometimes and I say dumb things but I’m pretty smart. I just never finished college the first time because there were a lot of distractions. I should be done soon, though. Thank, God! Although, I’m thinking about staying in school after I get my bachelors to get my masters.. Just because it’s so hard to get back into the groove of going to school and I don’t want to wait another ten years to get my graduate degree. I figured I might as well take advantage of what little momentum I’ve got and just go for the gusto. Speaking of accomplishments, I meant to post this on Friday but I was afraid you all would think it was an April Fool’s joke. I got the following letter from Wichita State’s Office of Multicultural Affairs last week:
Dear Cherrie, Congratulations! On behalf of the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Minority Student Mentoring Program, I want to congratulate you on achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher for the Fall 2004 semester. In honor of your achievement, we will host a Students of Color Academic Achievement Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the Regents Room (#203) of the Rhatigan Student Center. Congratulations again, and I look forward to seeing you at the ceremony. Please RSVP by April 15, 2005 to [contact person, phone number and email here]. Sincerely, Kenya Y. McKinley, M.S.W. Director
It came in the mail early last week but I didn’t open it because I hardly ever open mail from WSU. It’s usually stupid stuff. Brian opened the letter and was so thrilled he had to read it to me while I was in the bathroom. I guess he is proud of me. What I don’t get is that I have had a 3.5 GPA or better ever since I started going to school again and I’ve never been invited before. Did they just now realize that I am a student of color? Geez. Maybe this is the first time they’re doing this thing? Who knows? I already asked permission from my boss to attend so I’m going. You all should stop by and cheer for me. I need all the encouragement that I can get. You know, with my low self-esteem and all.

I got invited to the regional championships for February. Go me! This means my Business Law paper will have to wait until tonight. Alright, I just wanted to share that. Gotta go shower. Will let you all know how it went later this week.. Yes, later this week because I’ll be busy writing my paper the rest of this weekend. 😉

Skinny Brian
Posted on March 4, 2005 by Ching under Life, School.
These days Brian is not so skinny and sluggish and boring and not any fun at all. Where did hot, skinny, fun Brian go? =P P.S. Remember that Business Law exam that I couldn’t get myself to study for last weekend? Apparently, I couldn’t get myself to study for it because I didn’t need to. I got 122 out of 120 points possible. I still can’t figure out where the extra two points came from but, hey, I’ll take it. Go me!
