Brian’s First Time at Kyuramen

Posted on October 3, 2025 by under Food and Drink.

Untitled

I just tried to search the blog for Kyuramen and didn’t find anything. My friend Chris Townley and I had been there at least a couple of times. I can’t believe I never wrote about it. So weird. Anyway, I wanted to document this last visit because it was Brian’s first time there.

Untitled

Brian has been on a ramen kick lately and often going to Yokohama Ramen Izakaya, sometimes even without me. Chris and I decided to drag him to Kyuramen because he’d never been there and we wanted to expand his ramen horizons.

Untitled

The interior decor of Kyuramen is quite unique with the honeycomb booths and the curtained booths. The vibe is just really neat. I also like the details like how they have their seasonings in these cute little containers at your table.

Here are some pictures of the food we enjoyed on this visit…

The interesting thing about the ramen bowls at Kyuramen is they have this little game. If you get to the bottom of the bowl, you might see a sign for a free drink, appetizer, or ramen. It’s always fun to try to eat all your ramen and drink all the soup; although, I honestly have never been able to finish mine. I usually just have to ask for a to go container and that’s the only time I’ve ever seen the bottom. But out of all these times, we never seen a winner. Our server that day said she never has seen a winning bowl either. So much for that game, I guess. LOL.

Untitled

Another fun thing at Kyuramen is the craft station. If you have a bit of time, you can create a work of art and hang it. Chris and I have made ours. Brian didn’t want to make one on this visit but I’m hoping that he’ll make one next time we go because he’s really great at drawing. If you go, you definitely have to leave your mark just as many others have.

Untitled

Anyway, despite the fun, unique ambiance, Brian still prefers Yokohama Ramen Izakaya ramen flavors to Kyuramen. I kind of do too. What about you? Have you tried both of these places? If so, which do you like better?

Other August Highlights

Posted on September 26, 2025 by under Community, Hobbies, Things to Do.

August was a full month. Besides our trip to Grapevine for our 23rd wedding anniversary, I got to play a lot of pickleball and participate in several fun things. While I never get to play in the Chicken N Pickle ambassador open play anymore (because it’s on Wednesdays this year and I teach Zumba on Wednesdays at West YMCA), I always manage to stop by for the group photo. August was no different.

Untitled

I also enjoyed a great month of team league with my awesome KC^2 teammates.

Untitled

I played some chess at TapNPaddles.

Untitled

I helped with the Dink Minor Leagues MiLP v3 presented by InPickle Nation at TapNPaddles.

Untitled

We hung out with Chris Townley and Jay and Becca Dill at family fun day.

Untitled

We celebrated Zach’s 40th birthday at Flight Club.

Untitled

We ate lunch at Plentibloom (inside the Ruffin Building).

Untitled

Brian got to try a new ramen place. I will make a separate, dedicated post about this. Stay tuned!

Untitled

I played pickleball with some fun ladies.

Untitled

We had our weekly InPickle Nation mini tournaments at TapNPaddles.

Untitled

Lots of trips to the ballpark.

September is pretty much over so I’ll be recapping what happened this month soon. Eventually we will be completely caught up. Have a fantastic weekend!

Brian Got Me Flowers

Posted on September 19, 2025 by under Date Ideas, Hobbies, Things to Do.

A few weeks ago, Brian surprised me with this:

Untitled

As you know, I’m not a huge fan of flowers. First, they’re expensive; and secondly, they don’t last. They’re a nice thoughtful gift but I honestly thing they are a waste of money. So I was super thrilled when Brian surprised me Lego flowers instead.

He thought it would be fun for us to build it together. We started on it before pickleball one night but it was more involved that we thought so we didn’t finish. Not being a very patient person, looking for all the various pieces and parts was a bit cumbersome at times.

Brian was like, “I thought about just building it at work and bringing it home to you already done.” My immediate, unfiltered reaction was, “OMG. That would have been so much better!”

Untitled

He did complete building the rest of it himself and suprised me with the finished product when I came home from pickleball.

Untitled

I love it so much that I decided to take it to work and display it next to my other fake orchid. Speaking of Legos, if you enjoy building Lego sets and drinking wine, Exploration Place has super fun Sip & Build events the next couple of months.

I really wanted to do it in September but none of the dates worked for us. I hope they do it again because none of the October kits were that appealing to me. I wanted to do either the typewrite or the camera kit. But who am I kidding? I probably would have just supervised and watched Brian build both things. LOL. Until next time!

Hazel Fugit

Hazel

We watched Colby’s puppy Hazel last month while she attended a wedding in St. Louis with family. I’d have to say, besides our weekend getaway to Texas for our wedding anniversary, this was an August highlight. Hazel is soo cute.

We enjoyed having her over the weekend but, I must say, I had forgotten how much attention puppies require. She had so much energy! Also, Saki did not like having another dog in the house. Brian was smart to take Saki to work with him on Friday morning so I didn’t have to contend with watching both dogs while I was trying to work. It was tough enough keeping Hazel occupied and making sure she wasn’t chewing on anything important.

When Saki and Brian arrived home from work, Saki was not thrilled. Brian and I made sure that either one or both of us were to keep the dogs apart. Hazel wanted to play and be friends but Saki wanted nothing to do with her, often snarling whenever she got too close. Saki is now about the same age that Molly was when we first brought Saki home and I remember Molly reacting much the same way. Saki wanted to play and Molly was having none of it. It brought back memories. Thankfully, Brian and I were super attentive to both dogs and there were no altercations over the weekend. There were a few snarls but we managed to keep them apart and prevent any fights from happening.

Another thing I enjoyed was cuddling with Hazel at night. She’s a very cuddly dog and actually slept on my head a few times. My allergies were so bad all weekend but I couldn’t help myself. I just wanted to hug and cuddle her every chance I got.

Untitled

Anyway, the weekend was a good reminder to us that we cannot get another dog. Saki doesn’t like sharing so, unless we want every single moment of our day consumed by watching the dogs and making sure they don’t fight, it’s really not an option at the moment. We will just have to settle for occasional visits with Hazel (and other friends’ dogs).

Chama Gaucha

Posted on September 15, 2025 by under Food and Drink.

When we were in Grapevine (DFW area) last month celebrating our 23rd wedding anniversary, I found a nice restaurant for us to have dinner on Saturday night. I wanted to go somewhere somewhat special that neither of us had been to before. That’s how I found Chama Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse.

Untitled

We had been to other Brazilian steakhouses before so we kind of knew what to expect but we had never been to this particular one so it was new and exciting.

Untitled

Here’s a picture of us in the lobby.

Untitled

And another one from our table.

Untitled

We arrived a tad early for our dinner reservation (because we are always early to EVERYTHING) so we had to wait a short while. The nice thing is, if you do have to wait, they give freshly baked Brazilian cheese bread to munch on while waiting.

Untitled

It honestly sounds like a nice and generous touch until you realize that they’re probably hoping that you fill up on bread and are too full to actually eat the meats, which is the more expensive part of the dining experience. LOL.

Untitled

Besides the bread, they’re probably also hoping you’ll fill up on the salad bar. This is probably one of the best Brazilian steakhouse salad bars we’ve experienced. They’re never out of anything because the staff promptly replenishing anything that’s even remotely low and they also keep everything super tidy, wiping up spills or drips after guests.

Untitled

Here’s what Brian took from the salad bar. I can tell this is his plate because it has olives and he loves olives.

Untitled

This is what I grabbed. In hindsight, I probably should have skipped the lobster bisque because it really filled me up.

Untitled

Brian did not have a drink but I decided to try the coconut caipirinha. Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail so I had to try it, naturally. As they say, when in Rome… Or in this case, a Brazilian steakhouse.

Untitled

After the salad course, your steady stream of meet dishes begin. However, they also give you some mashed potatoes, polenta, and fried plantains. Brian had zero interest in mashed potatoes because he is so over it. That’s pretty much all he could eat during his cancer treatment (at least until he couldn’t eat anymore). He is still very traumatized. The fried plantains were delicious and had the perfect consistency. And the polenta! That was our favorite. I’d never had polenta before and they way they serve it at Chama is perfection. It’s almost like a hashbrown patty with the perfect crunch on the outside.

Untitled

I had to try the lamb chop while we were there and decided it wasn’t for me.

Untitled

For dessert we had an amazing chocolate mousse cake. We were so full that we couldn’t finish it. We ended up taking the rest back to the hotel and eating it on the drive back to Wichita the next day.

Untitled

Between the Brazilian cheese bread and the salad bar, we got full pretty quick so we didn’t even get a chance to try all the different meats available. But we also couldn’t eat anymore food so we both agreed we would just have to go back. Luckily, we had another trip to the DFW area planned for September so it really was feasible to make a return visit to the restaurant. But, just in case we didn’t return, I made a short video of our visit to remember it by.

Fast forward to this weekend when we were in Allen, TX for the Chicken N Pickle ambassador event. The restaurant, which is on the other side of DFW, was actually a 40-minute drive from our hotel but we liked it enough that we really wanted to go back. Besides that, they gave us a $30 OFF coupon on our last visit that we wanted to use and we had all those meats still that we didn’t get to try.

Untitled

I still got 2 of the deviled eggs but went easy on the lobster bisque this time to make sure I had room for all the meat dishes.

Untitled

The coconut caipirnha, while delicious, was a bit too rich for me so I opted for something light and refreshing. I got an aperol spritz this time.

Untitled

We always try to go easy on the salad bar but it’s so hard to resist all of the delicious options. Everything looks and tastes amazing. For instance, their chicken salad is seriously the best chicken salad I have ever had. I could totally make a meal of it. But you don’t pay $60 per person to eat chicken salad so I have to remind myself to only have a little bit.

Untitled

Same mashed potatoes, fried plantain, and polenta as last time. These are the basic three things that they bring to your table by default; however, you can request rice and beans and other things. There’s a whole list of things you can ask for from your server. So now, we are planning to return again to try all the various side dishes.

Untitled

But, you don’t really go for the side dishes or the salad bar. The meat is the main event. In the words of Rihanna, this is what you came for. Here are some pictures of what we had…

We skipped all the things we didn’t care for (like the lamb chop) and focused on our favorites and also the meats we didn’t get to try. Brian absolutely loved the chicken drumstick. I think we would probably get at least two of those next visit. He had it near the end and barely had room in his very full belly for the one he had. He said he was too full but it was so worth it. I was to full to try it and he told me I missed out. I guess I’ll have to add it to my list for next visit.

As with our previous visit, I made a short video. When they asked if we were celebrating anything (last month it was our wedding anniversary), we told them I was celebrating my birthday a month early because we didn’t have any plans to be in the DFW in October — my actual birthday month. They ended up comping our dessert again which was super nice of them. I didn’t get a picture but it is in the short video I made. We got the fireball cheesecake this time because the presentation is something else. And the cheesecake is something that Brian and I could both enjoy. Brian was not a fan of the cinnamon flavor though. However, the crunch on the outer shell of the cheesecake reminded me of the caramelized crust on a creme brulee. It was excellent.

Before we left, they gave us a $30 OFF coupon so now we’re trying to figure out when we are able to return to use it. There’s quite a few things we still want to try and a long list of dessert options we’ve yet to savor. Who wants to go with us on the next visit?
