Shock ‘N Clause at the New Neighbors

Posted on January 25, 2020 by under Community, Food and Drink, Things to Do.

I can’t believe I completely forgot to blog about the one of the best things that I was part of in 2019. Our friend Marc discovered the Shock ‘N Clause movement and organized one for our group.

There are many variations of this random act of kindness but our group agreed upon $50 per person (or $100 per couple). It basically works this way: All the participants pool their cash, use the funds to pay the meal, and the remaining cash goes to the server as their tip.

Our group consisted of the #VacayWithJayJay #CostaRica2019 gang plus Mama Dill and two other couples. One of the non #CostaRica2019 couples was friends with the Huntees and the other couple was friends with the Shooks. Here’s a group photo of the most generous bunch of people I know…

We ended up taking our Shock ‘N Clause to the New Neighbors because none of the other diners could accommodate our large group (we had 15 people total) for brunch. Neighbors holds a special place in my heart because we used to play “bar” poker there back in the day. This was back in our Amateur Poker League (APL) days about fifteen years ago. I actually thought we were going to that same restaurant where we used to play but Brian and I hadn’t been there in years and we didn’t realize they moved. The restaurant is in a new spot and now called the New Neighbors Bar & Grill, instead of simply just Neighbors Bar & Grill.

I think the move to the new location happened a few years prior but the name change happened only a few months ago. After the owner was murdered back in July, the restaurant was closed for some time. The restaurant reopened in October under new ownership and that’s when the name change to the New Neighbors Bar & Grill happened.

Anyway, we were lucky to have a great server who seemed truly deserving of the gift. The restaurant isn’t a fancy place and the menu items are quite reasonably priced. Our group’s entire meal cost under $200. Since we brought $750 with us, our server ended up with just slightly over $550 as her tip. It felt really heartwarming to be able to pay it forward and bless someone’s life in this way specially around the holidays. I’d have to say this was the most gratifying meal I’ve had ever in my entire lifetime.

Speaking of meal, I’d be remiss if I didn’t share pictures of our food. That’s kind of my thing and I’m not about to let you down.

I had their corned beef hash which was refreshingly very different than any other corned beef hash I’d ever had. I think it’s the best ever compared to all the other ones I’ve had in town, and I’m not just saying that because my heart was full.

I couldn’t take pics of everyone’s food, because there were two other couples in attendance who I didn’t know very well and I didn’t want to seem weird, but I took as many as I could.

At least our #VacayWithJayJay pals knew better than to start eating before I could take a photo of their meals. LOL. Seriously though, we have the most amazing and generous bunch of friends. I hope that Brian and I are able to participate when we do this again later this year. Until then, keep paying it forward and GNG.

Dance ‘Til You’re Dead

This event is by far one of the best Zumba events I’ve been part of this year. Earlier this year, during the Spring, we had a Y Takeover event at Chicken N Pickle. The event is similar to this one but it was Zumba and Sh’bam combo. That event was a lot of fun too, I found the event last month even more fun because it was all Zumba. If you can’t already tell, I am not a huge fan of Sh’bam so as much as possible have been staying away from those events. I know my mantra is “Never miss a party if you can help it” but if I have to do Sh’bam then I usual somehow magically have other better, more fun things to do. LOL.

I think I was open-minded about Sh’bam before I actually tried it. They say always give something a few tries before coming to a conclusion. Now that I’ve tried it a few times, I can safely say I do not enjoy it as much as I enjoy Zumba.

The event a few weeks ago at Chicken N Pickle was just all Zumba so it was perfect. It was a collaboration between North and South YMCA instructors. There were eight of us altogether.

I love these events at Chicken N Pickle. The setup over there is just awesome and perfect for outdoor events like this one. I can’t wait until winter is over and we can start having these events again.

Uncorked and Unwined

Posted on October 2, 2019 by under Community, Events.

I attended the best networking event last month hosted by BKD. It was at the New Market Square Cocoa Dolce, which I’d never been to before.

Untitled

I’m so glad I was able to squeeze in the schedule because I bumped into my Leadership Wichita classmates Jennifer Wold (she organized the event), Dotty Harpool, and Jessica Dunbar. It was fun catching up.

Untitled

I don’t frequently get to spend time with my Leadership Wichita classmates because we are all so busy. However, Dotty has been coming to my Aqua Zumba classes so I actually have seen her more frequently than the others the last few months. Another classmate that I bump into on a somewhat regular basis is Teresa Veazey. She couldn’t make event that night but Brian and I will sometimes run into her at events or at the nail spa.

Last week I ran into Jason Mock at the Walkway Cafe (the cafeteria in our building). I hadn’t seen him in forever. He stayed and we caught up over lunch. It was nice. I always love running into my Leadership Wichita classmates.

Breakfast with Leadership Wichita Classmates

Posted on December 9, 2018 by under Community, Food and Drink.

Met some of my Leadership Wichita classmates at Doo-Dah Diner on Tuesday for breakfast and a gift exchange. Michelle and I took this selfie while we were waiting for everyone else to arrive.

We did the gift exchange “white elephant” style where you can steal gifts but everyone was so polite no gift-stealing actually transpired. Oh, and, of course, I forgot to take pictures of people and just got pictures of their food. LOL.

Obviously, Michelle was there as you can see from the above photo. And, of course, Jessica was there because she organized the get together. Teresa, Dotty, Cynthia, Jaimie, and Bill also attended. Below are pictures of some of our food. You can try to figure out which is which.

Fun Times with My Rotary Club

Posted on October 11, 2018 by under Community, Events, Things to Do.

We spent the last couple of weekends hanging out with the Andover Rotary Club.

Untitled

Last weekend was Greater Andover Days, an event that our club supports. We’re usually out there for the tailgate party on Friday night and to sell beer on Saturday night. The setup was a little different this year because we got to use the lodge patio. It’s beautiful and spacious, with great views of the amphitheater. It would have been perfect if we had a better turnout. Apparently, there were several things going on that same night. There was the 150th celebration in Augusta, Lynyrd Skynyrd at Intrust Bank Arena, Wichita Taste downtown, and a bunch of other events scattered around town and nearby. It was a beautiful night and the weather was perfect but we didn’t have quite the turnout we expected.

Do not believe it when someone tells you there is nothing to do in Wichita. There are always multiple options on any given night. Sometimes choosing which event to attend can even be overwhelming.

Untitled

The weather wasn’t the best this past Saturday for our annual Haus of Brews event but that didn’t seem to negatively impact the turnout. Brian and I got there early to help set up. This year we had additional help from the lovely people at Meritrust, long time sponsors of the event.

Untitled

Here’s a picture of Alison and her husband Chris setting up the German food buffet.

Untitled

We relocated the check in desk this year and I kind of like it. I think it confused the regulars who have been coming year after year but I thought it made for better flow.

Untitled

The wine station ended up being moved to the old check in spot.

Untitled

River City Brewery was one of six local breweries to support our event.

Untitled

We also had Areo Plains, Nortons, Third Place Brewing, Walnut River, and Wichita Brewing Company. Everyone brought plenty of great beer and smiles.

Untitled

Here’s another picture of the brewery guys getting set up. Treescapes in Andover is a lovely place to have Haus of Brews. We are always grateful to them for letting us use their space for our event.

Untitled

Here’s a picture of the food menu along with a bit of information about our club.

Untitled

The breweries brought several beer selections along with their most popular brews. We also had a good wine selection for the ladies and non-beer drinkers and, as always, there was a margarita machine inside churning all-you-can-drink frozen margaritas. There’s something for everyone!

Untitled

Our friends Jay, Becca, Cory, and April attended for the first time.

Untitled

I also had some friends from work come out to support the event. It was fabulous! Overall, I thought it was a great way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Haus of Brews. I look forward to our next one.
