The day began with an early waxing appointment. I had to reschedule it from yesterday because I had a one o’clock meeting that I couldn’t miss. So anyway, after my waxing I noticed that my left earring is missing. I lingered around the room, carefully inspecting the floor and the bed to no avail. I peeked in the trash, carefully sifting through the less icky stuff on the surface – nothing.

So I told Patricia what happened and I showed her what my earring looked like and pleaded for them to call me if it is ever found. I told Brian what happened and he was really upset. It would have been different if these were just regular el cheapo earrings from Express or Target or something, but these were my Zales diamond earrings. We purchased them almost four years ago back when we were irrationally spending money like there was no tomorrow. They cost almost as much our 32″ TV in the bedroom.

I was totally devastated. I wasn’t going to start crying in front of strangers though, so we paid and returned home. We actually had errands to run but we were hoping that maybe the earrings fell in the house and we will find it on the floor somewhere. So we searched and searched. No such luck.

Brian was convinced that my earring came off during the waxing and maybe it’s in the trash. So we decided to return to Individually Yours to look through the trash in that room. I felt totally ridiculous asking for the trash but we were desperate, and desperate times call for desperate measures.

We got the trash bag and I figured that I would go through the icky mess in the privacy of our home where we will be free from strange looks. Before that we thought we would have breakfast. We agreed that digging through the trash will more than likely ruin our appetite so better eat first. So we were eating at IHOP and as we were half-way through our meal I get a call from Individually Yours. They found my earring on the floor somewhere. Patricia actually asked if we had dug through the trash yet and, thankfully, we had not. I was not only relieved to hear that my missing earring had been found, but I was equally relieved that we didn’t have to go through the trash anymore. Hallelujah!

We told her we would be by after breakfast to pick it up. While over in the North Rock area, we went ahead and bought puppy food for Molly at PetSmart. That was one of the errands we had to do for the day. After PetSmart we went straight to Individually Yours to retrieve my earring.

As it turns out the reason the lever had broken so the earring was stuck to my ear with nothing holding it in place. That’s why it fell. Brian and I figured that since we were going to Zales today anyway (to pick up our wedding rings) we could just ask them to repair it.

[ BEGIN LONG SIDE NOTE ] We had gone to Zales last weekend to inquire about getting my rings resized. I had gained so much weight that my size 4 rings no longer fit. They were getting more and more difficult to remove at night. To go up a size on platinum rings they charge $90 per ring. We also asked about soldering the rings together and that was another $60 or so. Since my bridal set counts as two rings, the work was going to cost about $250. That’s a lot of money for pragmatic people like us.

Brian and I talked it through, $250 toward nothing or we can put the $250 towards an upgrade. Bethany showed us some rings that were identical to my bridal set only with larger diamonds. She showed us a 2 CT but that set was just too big for my puny fingers. My original bridal set was 1 CT (just like the one pictured below) so I asked if they had 1 1/2 CT. She said they didn’t have any in their store but that she could order them for me and have them in the store by Thursday so we could look at them.

Thursday came and we looked at the rings. Bethany was helping another customer so Kathy helped us. I tried the rings on and I liked how the in-between size looked. They’re more noticeable than my old rings but not too big. They’re not big and gaudy like the 2 CT ones. We decided to get them and have them sized down to 4 3/4. I was going to go to a 5 but Kathy said that my fingers might shrink in the winter so it may be better to get a snug fit. I was concerned about the cost of having them resized and she mentioned a two-year service agreement that would cover any sizing and repair for the next two years. No matter how many times I would need to size up or down during the two-year period, the work would be covered. For only $90, it was an excellent deal. Besides, I made up the $90 just in the cost of sizing my rings to down 4 3/4 from their original size (7 is the standard ring size at most places) and soldering the rings together.

Kathy then mentioned that she could have our rings ready by Friday because they have a jewelry repair person coming in that evening, but if we want the guy who is better at platinum rings then we’d have to wait until Saturday. Brian began a tirade about how we will wait for the other guy because the last time he got his ring sized they didn’t do a very good job. He mentioned a crack and Kathy asked to inspect his ring. She said it was pretty bad and offered to fix it. Once again, our standard question is “How much will it cost?” She then said the magic word: free. Free is always good. She said she’d just ring it up under my service agreement. Brian and I were too very satisfied customers. Then we were off to CARMAX to see about trading Brian’s car in. Philip, the guy who was helping us, was super. He was nice and friendly and had a great sense of humor. If you ever go there, ask for Philip. Anyway, let’s save the car shopping experience for another blog entry because we went to Gorges today too and it’s going to be a really long story if I get into now.

Fast forward to Zales. They wowed us yet again with their outstanding service. I thought it was just Kathy, the store rep we met with on Thursday, that was nice. I guess everyone is nice there. Bethany who helped us with our questions last weekend was really helpful and Ed today was great too. Because of these interactions, I will never buy jewelry anywhere else but Zales. They were awesome.

Why am I singing their praises? Well, I showed Ed the earrings today and he was trying to look them up on the computer. Couldn’t find them, but he said “Let’s see if we can just replace them for you.” Totally out of nowhere. Unexpected. I didn’t really ask for a replacement. I would be perfectly happy with getting the broken earring repaired.

He found some diamond hoop earrings similar to mine, but they were slightly different. They were narrower and longer. Since we couldn’t find my exact same earrings, we settled on getting them repaired. When Brian and I asked him how much the repair work would cost, he said they would fix them free of charge. Isn’t that awesome?

Here I was, on the verge of throwing away my diamond earrings because I had lost one of the pair. Luckily, though it is broken, we find it. I’m thinking, I will never be able to wear these ever again. Maybe, just maybe I can salvage them by getting them repaired cheaply. Lo and behold, I can get them fixed for free. Someone up there must really be looking out for me. Bad things happen, but somehow things always seem to work out in the end.

Anyway, back to Ed. He said he will try to keep looking for identical earrings and if not, will get my earrings repaired. He assured Brian that he would contact us sometime this coming week with an update. I’m not worried because I know my earrings are in good hands. Zales is the best!

What a crazy day this has been!
