When I decided to return to school, I kind of looked at things from a glass-half-empty perspective but now I’m more optimistic about everything. The glass is half full and it contains sangria! I met with my advisor today and it seems I’m right on schedule. After this semester is over, I have one more year. With taking a couple of classes this summer and nine credit hours each for this fall and next spring, I’ll actually end up with all of the minors that I’ve been striving for — so I’ll end up with a BBA in Management Information Systems and minors in Accounting, Management and Computer Science. Go me! I completed my degree card and everything so it feels like graduation is just around the corner. I cannot wait! I want a degree already. I feel like such a loser without one.. And even more so because I’m not exactly dumb. I act dumb sometimes and I say dumb things but I’m pretty smart. I just never finished college the first time because there were a lot of distractions. I should be done soon, though. Thank, God! Although, I’m thinking about staying in school after I get my bachelors to get my masters.. Just because it’s so hard to get back into the groove of going to school and I don’t want to wait another ten years to get my graduate degree. I figured I might as well take advantage of what little momentum I’ve got and just go for the gusto. Speaking of accomplishments, I meant to post this on Friday but I was afraid you all would think it was an April Fool’s joke. I got the following letter from Wichita State’s Office of Multicultural Affairs last week:

Dear Cherrie, Congratulations! On behalf of the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Minority Student Mentoring Program, I want to congratulate you on achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher for the Fall 2004 semester. In honor of your achievement, we will host a Students of Color Academic Achievement Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at 2 p.m. in the Regents Room (#203) of the Rhatigan Student Center. Congratulations again, and I look forward to seeing you at the ceremony. Please RSVP by April 15, 2005 to [contact person, phone number and email here]. Sincerely, Kenya Y. McKinley, M.S.W. Director

It came in the mail early last week but I didn’t open it because I hardly ever open mail from WSU. It’s usually stupid stuff. Brian opened the letter and was so thrilled he had to read it to me while I was in the bathroom. I guess he is proud of me. What I don’t get is that I have had a 3.5 GPA or better ever since I started going to school again and I’ve never been invited before. Did they just now realize that I am a student of color? Geez. Maybe this is the first time they’re doing this thing? Who knows? I already asked permission from my boss to attend so I’m going. You all should stop by and cheer for me. I need all the encouragement that I can get. You know, with my low self-esteem and all.

I’m almost to the end of the tunnel and I’m glad to report that there is light.
