The message is an important one so I thought I should share it with everyone.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Cold Within<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>by James Patrick Kinney<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Six humans trapped by happenstance<br \/>\nIn dark and bitter cold<br \/>\nEach possessed a stick of wood&#8211;<br \/>\nOr so the story&#8217;s told.<\/p>\n<p>Their dying fire in need of logs,<br \/>\nBut the first one held hers back,<br \/>\nFor, of the faces around the fire,<br \/>\nShe noticed one was black.<\/p>\n<p>The next one looked cross the way<br \/>\nSaw one not of his church,<br \/>\nAnd could not bring himself to give<br \/>\nThe fire his stick of birch.<\/p>\n<p>The third one sat in tattered clothes<br \/>\nHe gave his coat a hitch,<br \/>\nWhy should his log be put to use<br \/>\nTo warm the idle rich?<\/p>\n<p>The rich man just sat back and thought<br \/>\nOf wealth he had in store,<br \/>\nAnd keeping all that he had earned<br \/>\nFrom the lazy, shiftless poor.<\/p>\n<p>The black man&#8217;s face bespoke revenge<br \/>\nAs the fire passed from his sight,<br \/>\nFor he saw in his stick of wood<br \/>\nA chance to spite the white.<\/p>\n<p>And the last man of this forlorn group<br \/>\nDid nought except for gain,<br \/>\nGiving just to those who gave<br \/>\nWas how he played the game,<\/p>\n<p>Their sticks held tight in death&#8217;s stilled hands<br \/>\nWas proof enough of sin;<br \/>\nThey did not die from cold without&#8211;<br \/>\nThey died from cold within.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The presentation this afternoon was an excellent <em>recharge<\/em> of the concepts we learned and developed in Diversity Champions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our speaker Judge Tommy Webb shared an enlightening poem by James Patrick Kinney with us this afternoon.
