I got me some fake sheepskin boots last week.\u00c2\u00a0 Brian hates them and thinks that they’re ugly.\u00c2\u00a0 That’s what I thought at first when I saw Drew Barrymore sporting them in various magazine photos last year but, to tell you the truth, they’ve grown on me.\u00c2\u00a0 Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that all of the most fashionable celebrities are wearing them.\u00c2\u00a0 True to form, I got myself a pair because, frankly, I’m a celebrity in my own right!<\/p>\n

“But they’re so ugly!”\u00c2\u00a0 is Brian’s initial reaction.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“When you see them on me, you will love them!\u00c2\u00a0 I promise,”\u00c2\u00a0 I reply.\u00c2\u00a0 “They’ll have to grow on me, I guess.”\u00c2\u00a0 Whatever.\u00c2\u00a0 Guys are so clueless!\u00c2\u00a0 I told Brian, in about six months to a year when everyone else starts wearing them I will be able to tell him “I told you so.”<\/p>\n

“If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you do it?”\u00c2\u00a0 Umm, probably not — unless there’s a bungee cord attached to my ankle.\u00c2\u00a0 Besides, they’re just boots.\u00c2\u00a0 What’s the harm in that?<\/p>\n

What’s so funny is, I pointed them out to Misty a while back.\u00c2\u00a0 One of her magazines showed a picture of Kirsten Dunst wearing them.\u00c2\u00a0 “That can’t be Kirsten Dunst!” she says, “Those are really ugly boots.”\u00c2\u00a0 “Yes, it is [Kirsten Dunst]!\u00c2\u00a0 I promise!\u00c2\u00a0 All of the celebrities are wearing them nowadays.”<\/p>\n

Her reaction?\u00c2\u00a0 “But they’re so ugly!”\u00c2\u00a0 There goes that word again.<\/p>\n

Sometime after Misty goes, “You know, ever since you pointed those boots out to me I started seeing them everywhere in magazines.”<\/p>\n

“I told you!”\u00c2\u00a0 I guess I’m more impressionable than Misty is because she still doesn’t think they’re “wearable.”\u00c2\u00a0 It’s that ugliness factor.<\/p>\n

“I bought some,” I tell her.\u00c2\u00a0 They’re pretend Ugg boots, though.\u00c2\u00a0 Mine are made by MIA which I found at Dillard’s for a bargain $69 bucks.\u00c2\u00a0 “I’ll have to wear them for you.”<\/p>\n

Not only are sheepskin boots ugly but they’re kind of pricey as well.\u00c2\u00a0 You don’t see cheap and Ugg in the same sentence.\u00c2\u00a0 And no one wants to spend a lot of money on ugly boots.\u00c2\u00a0 We came to the conclusion that Ugg probably got their brand name from the word ugly and laugh about it.\u00c2\u00a0 It turns out we were right<\/font><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Anyway, I thought they were ugly at first but I like them now.\u00c2\u00a0 I wouldn’t have bought my MIA boots otherwise, duh?!<\/p>\n

So I wore them to school and work on Thursday.\u00c2\u00a0 “They’re actually not bad looking,” Misty says.\u00c2\u00a0 “They’re cuter than the ones pictured in the magazines.”\u00c2\u00a0 At first I think she’s just trying to make me feel better about my $70 blunder.\u00c2\u00a0 But then she goes, “I wonder when Payless will carry them.”\u00c2\u00a0 And I know it was a compliment.<\/p>\n

Feeling brave, I wear them again the next day.\u00c2\u00a0 Most of the people I encounter don’t know what to make of them but one girl in Stat goes, “Your boots are cute.\u00c2\u00a0 Don’t let anyone make fun of you.”\u00c2\u00a0 She was being sincere and I really appreciated it.<\/p>\n

Today we went to the mall to return a pair of Unlisted boots that I had bought along with the MIA boots.\u00c2\u00a0 I had bought them mostly to pacify Brian (because he really hated the MIA boots).\u00c2\u00a0 Now that I’m totally loving the MIA boots and I’ve found that I’m able to wear them with a lot of outfits, I decide to say goodbye to the more conventional Unlisted boots.<\/p>\n

I wore a green, fitted, v-neck sweater from Hollister and my short, pleated skirt from Abercrombie & Fitch.\u00c2\u00a0 Naturally, or rather defiantly, I wore my MIA boots.\u00c2\u00a0 Brian had said they wouldn’t work with the outfit and I was trying to prove him wrong.<\/p>\n

“So how do you like them?\u00c2\u00a0 And you said it wouldn’t work.\u00c2\u00a0 Why don’t you just admit it when you’re wrong?”<\/p>\n

“I still don’t like the boots.”<\/p>\n

“But don’t they look cute with this outfit?”<\/p>\n

“You always look cute baby, no matter what you’re wearing.”\u00c2\u00a0 I guess I look cute despite<\/u> my ugly boots.\u00c2\u00a0 That’s the way I took it anyway.<\/p>\n

“Don’t I look like I just stepped out of a catalog?”<\/p>\n

“You always look like you just stepped out of a catalog.”<\/p>\n

Being fashionable is not a crime.\u00c2\u00a0 Brian has always wanted me to be more adventurous in my clothing choices but now that he is not very supportive of my so-called ugly boots, I realize that my style is just different.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean, what can be more courageous and adventurous than wearing boots your husband thinks are ugly?<\/p>\n

The most satisfying compliment of all came from this cute girl at Express.\u00c2\u00a0 Now, she is fashionable.\u00c2\u00a0 Whenever we go to the Express store, she’s always in something stylish and trendy.\u00c2\u00a0 I know that they’re encouraged to buy their own merchandise but most of the other girls need fashion help.\u00c2\u00a0 This girl has found fashion nirvana.\u00c2\u00a0 Case in point: when we first noticed her, she was wearing a black skirt, the lace corset top (a $68 splurge that I relented to after much pressure from Brian — he really liked it — I wouldn’t have relented but it was perfect for the occasion — I wore it on our anniversary date) and a flower choker.\u00c2\u00a0 A flower choker!\u00c2\u00a0 Trust me, not many people have the guts to or can get away with wearing such an accessory!<\/p>\n

“Cute outfit.\u00c2\u00a0 And you’re wearing J.LO boots.\u00c2\u00a0 I love your J.LO boots.”<\/p>\n

If I needed any kind of affirmation (which I don’t because I’m truly loving my boots) on whether or not the boots are a keeper, that was it right there.\u00c2\u00a0 I love them because the totally clueless and unfashionable just stare at you and the truly fashionable give you their nod of approval.\u00c2\u00a0 In a town like Wichita, which might as well be Bedrock and where you can count the number of fashionable people with the digits on your hands and feet, you get more stares than kudos.<\/p>\n

I’m definitely the only one brave enough to sport these boots around town.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps there are others like me but I’ve yet to run into them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
