{"id":102,"date":"2003-08-27T22:11:47","date_gmt":"2003-08-28T04:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brubakers.us\/blog\/?p=266"},"modified":"2003-08-27T22:11:47","modified_gmt":"2003-08-28T04:11:47","slug":"observations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/?p=102","title":{"rendered":"Observations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There have been so many changes since I last attended <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wichita.edu\/\"  target=\"out\"><font color=\"#000000\">Wichita State University<\/font><\/a>..\u00c2\u00a0 Technology in schools have advanced so much in the last four or five years.\u00c2\u00a0 When I registered for my classes this semester, I was amazed that I could do everything online &#8212; even get advising.\u00c2\u00a0 Back in the day you had touch-and-roll phone registration or you registered for classes in person.\u00c2\u00a0 When it was time to pay, everyone paid in person so you can imagine the nightmare.\u00c2\u00a0 These days many people opt to pay by mail so there are fewer people who pay in person.\u00c2\u00a0 The lines are still pretty bad but only because they&#8217;ve shortened the payment period.\u00c2\u00a0 Overall things are more efficient than they were in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The improvements don&#8217;t end there either.\u00c2\u00a0 I love that more classes are now using <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blackboard.wichita.edu\/\"  target=\"out\"><font color=\"#000000\">Blackboard<\/font><\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 The technology has been around for many, many years but none of the classes I&#8217;ve taken in late 90s really took full advantage of it.\u00c2\u00a0 The computers have been replaced with newer ones and even the classrooms received upgrades.\u00c2\u00a0 Enter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.smarttech.com\/Products\/smartboard\/index.asp\"  target=\"out\"><font color=\"#000000\">SMARTBoard<\/font><\/a>, the technology that will render primitive chalkboards and whiteboards obsolete.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s great to see progress.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s great to see the university make an effort to keep up.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to changes that I&#8217;ve noticed.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a familiar place but there is so much for me to explore and catch up on.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s like seeing an old friend at your high school reunion whom you haven&#8217;t seen since graduation.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m getting to know WSU all over again.<\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;m back to school with my old stuff.\u00c2\u00a0 Armed with new text books and supplies but still the same old me.\u00c2\u00a0 Me and my trusty leather backpack which Sarah jokingly refers to as &#8220;old school.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 And it is.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s showing signs of age very much like its owner.\u00c2\u00a0 Bought at Wilson&#8217;s for $125 at the beginning of my very first semester at WSU in 1996, it&#8217;s been through a lot.\u00c2\u00a0 And it endures, much like I have.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There have been so many changes since I last attended Wichita State University..\u00c2\u00a0 Technology in schools have advanced so much in the last four or five years.\u00c2\u00a0 When I registered for my classes this semester, I was amazed that I could do everything online &#8212; even get advising.\u00c2\u00a0 Back in the day you had touch-and-roll [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[18],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/102"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=102"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/102\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=102"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=102"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brubakers.us\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=102"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
