Brian Comes Through

Posted on November 20, 2011 by under Outfits, Things to Do.

While Brian was in Vegas a couple of weeks ago, he begged me not to go to Suede by myself. In exchange he promised to take me to Suede every Friday until the end of the year. It worked out well because I actually had another function to go to that Friday night, which was better than going to Suede. LOL.

Brian made good on his promise and took me to Suede again the other night.

Last weekend I wore a halter polka dot dress that mom gave me. This weekend I decided to recycle the outfit that I wore to the Brew Ha-Ha at Flint Hills National. I figured it would be okay since I didn’t get photographed in it. Plus, I’m not really averse to wearing the same outfit. Some people will refuse to wear the same outfit for several months. Well, if you have a clothing wardrobe like my mom’s, you can do that sort of stuff. It’s just not practical for regular people. I actually find that I wear the clothes that I like most week after week. I have clothes that are pretty much “work uniforms” of a sort.

Mom liked this dress actually. I told her that I had gotten it at the spa for only $40. Beau Monde is selling clothes now. They owner has been dabbling in clothing and accessories for a while. She is after all marketing the place as a “spa and boutique” type of business. I’m not sure if it is intentional or unintentional part of their marketing plan, but it is quite an effective way to differentiate the business from Healing Water and Serenity (two other places on the East side of Wichita that Brian and I have gone to for massages). Anyway, this is the first time that something really caught my eye.

The first time I saw the dress was almost two months ago. I thought they were cute and one of the Beau Monde staff gave a blazing testimonial. She was like, “They look super cute with leggings. I have it in every color.” This was a girl who was always fashionable and put together so I knew I could trust her recommendation. That’s all I needed to hear. I wanted one. Of course, they didn’t have any left in my size. They only had mediums and larges. As she was searching through the rack she was like, “You are tiny. The medium will be too big for you. We should have some more coming in, though.” I hadn’t been called “tiny” in years so that made me feel good. LOL.

Several weeks later when I was in for my regular waxing appointment, I found that they had one in small. It was the only small they had in stock so I went ahead and bought it. Although, I wish that they made these dresses in extra small because I think even the small fits a little baggy. My bra kept peeking out of the low scoop neckline all night at Suede. I don’t think that I would have had that problem if the dress was cut just a tad smaller.

Anyway, mom actually got dad to come out the other night and I think they had a great time. I think the funniest part was that mom was trying to tell dad that he was doing something wrong and it turns out that mom was the one who was doing it wrong the entire time. LOL. Of course, we women always think that we’re right and usually we are. Not this time, though.

This is going to sound a tad racist but, when it comes to Brian and dancing, I always play the Filipino card. I mean everyone knows that Filipinos have rhythm. We are a nation of dancing fools. Heck, even our inmates enjoy dancing.

One night at swing lessons, Brian and I were having trouble with one of the combinations and we couldn’t figure out who was messing it up. He was convinced that I was doing it wrong and I was convinced that he was the one messing us up. I was like, “Hmmm… Let me see… You’re white and I’m Filipino. I’m pretty sure I’m doing it right.” We both busted up laughing. That’s one of the things that I love about Brian is that we can make fun of stuff and one another and we always have a great time, no matter where we are.

The last couple of weeks of salsa lessons have been really good. Gina is such a great teacher. We learned some new combinations and I think we actually look like we know what we’re doing on the dance floor now. Even Rene (mi bailador favorito) agrees that we’ve come a long way from when he first met us at Suede last year.

Here’s a photo of Hideki, Gina Ann, Andrea, Rene and me from this weekend.

We had a smaller group than the previous week (last Friday was 11/11/11 after all, so it was kind of a special night), but that didn’t stop us from having a great time and taking lots of good pictures. These ones I’m posting were stolen from Gina Ann’s Facebook. She’s never without her camera!

See what I mean about the bra thing?

Anyway, we won’t be at Suede this coming Friday because we’re spending the weekend in Kansas City. We’re hitting Legends for our annual midnight shopping expedition. We’re leaving on Thursday night and won’t be back until Sunday. I’m pretty sure there will be naps mixed in with the marathon shopping. LOL.

I’m hoping that we will be back at Suede the following Friday, but that all depends on how I feel because I have my biopsy that afternoon. I’m not sure what all that entails. Hopefully, I’ll be in a good mood and dancing won’t be out of the question. Maybe I’ll have a new outfit to wear. New clothes (even hand-me-downs) always cheer me up.

Apps, Apps Everywhere

Posted on November 20, 2011 by under Wishlist.

We got a $20 rewards certificate from Best Buy the other day so I told Brian that he could get the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 game that he’d been wanting. While we were there, we came across this…

2011-11-18 17.13.24.jpg

It’s not enough that your TV can Facebook and Twitter, now your refrigerator can do the same things too. Holy cow! Why? The ubiquity of the internet is getting out of control, don’t you think? Just a tad? LOL.

I actually shouldn’t say anything because, if I had a house and enough money, I’d probably have one of these. I’m such a sucker for this sort of stuff. I can just see us years from now, “We love our refrigerator. It works really great. Plays our Pandora music stations and everything. It just won’t keep the food cold.”

Now, what would be really cool is if the door of the microwave oven would double as a TV/computer screen. This way you can watch news or browse your Facebook while you’re waiting for your Lean Cuisine to finish cooking. Those Marie Callender’s chicken pot pies are the worst. They take like ten minutes to make in the microwave. You might as well cook something on the stove! LOL. With your new high-tech microwave though, you could use those ten minutes to browse YouTube or play some games. I think a microwave/TV/computer combo would be the number one must have home appliance for everyone. Whirlpool had a concept or prototype of this of some sort several years ago. I wonder why they never made it to the stores?

The Bermuda Triangle of Wichita

Posted on November 20, 2011 by under Life, Shopping.

This has been a crazy week for losing stuff. Thankfully, lost items were eventually found. It’s been really weird, though. I feel like I’m in the Bermuda Triangle or at least my stuff is…

Brian and I remembered to pick up his clothes from the cleaners on Monday night, but we forgot to pick up my clothes from the tailor on Tuesday night. I think it’s because we were dead set on working out, after having skipped the gym on Monday to run errands. So on Wednesday, we decided that we would pick up my clothes over our lunch hour. This way, we could go straight to the gym from work without having to make a side trip. (We wouldn’t be able to pick up my clothes after working out because then the place would be closed.) I really didn’t think it would be a problem picking up my clothes during lunch since I figured that we would be at the shop five minutes, tops. No such luck.

For a while there I thought that Alterations by Sarah had lost my clothes because the girl couldn’t find them. I would have been really mad too, because the two skirts I brought to them were my favorites. Thus, the need for tailoring. The other clothes that I didn’t really care too much about, I’d already taken to mom’s. These were skirts I actually wanted to keep. The pants were a brand new pair of suit pants from J.Crew that I had just purchased. I hadn’t even worn them yet. They’re supposed to be 2P, but they were still too long. What can I say? I’m a midget.

After over half an hour of waiting at the shop and watching another customer pick up their tailoring and leave and listening to her call their other location in desperation, it turns out that she just didn’t know what she was looking for. She kept insisting that one of the skirts that I had dropped off was brown. Of course, she couldn’t find them. Neither of the two skirts I dropped off were brown. I wish that she would have just come right out and asked me what my garments looked like because then I could have described them to her and, thus, saved us all valuable time. Why are people too stubborn and proud to ask for help? After I told her what the skirts looked like, she found them without any problems. Although, when she was checking us out, she still insisted that the patterned skirt was brownish in color. The only explanation Brian had after we left is that she is probably colorblind and has no idea that she is. “Although I’m colorblind and I can tell those are black,” Brian added. I told Brian that if she’s colorblind then she needs to find another job because she has no business working for an alterations shop. There was no reason that it should take almost an hour to look for something. The thought of them losing my stuff really freaked me out. That, and the fact that their front desk person may or may not be colorblind just doesn’t instill a lot of confidence in me so I’ll never ever go back there again. I did get a couple of good recommendations from my friends on Facebook.

Rigo Suave Creations

Personally, I think I will probably use Quick Stitch in the future. Brian was really pleased with how his suit alterations turned out. Our friends Jay and Stephanie have also had work done there and have both been really pleased. It’s also conveniently located in the Northeast part of town, which is our comfort zone. Vanessa says Rigo is really good so that may be worth checking out, too. Just whatever you do, don’t go to Alterations by Sarah, unless you want to be traumatized.

Speaking of traumatic experiences, that’s nothing compared to what the US Postal Service put me through this week. A package that I had purchased from eBay was supposed to have been delivered at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, but I never got it. The tracking information on their web site said that it was delivered. I checked with our leasing office after work on Thursday and first thing in the morning on Friday and they didn’t have it. (I wasn’t feeling well so I went ahead and took a day of vacation. I don’t like using sick leave when I can avoid it. I figured I would use the vacation day to run some errands and deal with the post office to figure out what happened to my package.) At this point, I was really worried that my package was stolen.

When I called the post office, the rep told me that I would hear from the supervisor either later in the day or first thing the next day. I ran my errands and waited for a call all day on Friday: nothing. By the time I went to the gym around 9:00 am this morning, I still hadn’t heard from the post office. Right before Zumba, I asked Brian to please call the post office to follow up on my missing package. I’m not sure what he told them, but my package was delivered around noon today. We just happened to be home from the gym and getting ready to go to the movies. Apparently, the mail carrier put it in the box for 1305. I’m not sure how because the correct unit number was clearly marked on the box. Anyway, I’m not sure what happens when the incorrect recipient decides to keep the package (not that the people in 1305 would do anything like that) but I’m glad that I don’t have to find out. It was quite an ordeal just getting the post office to look for my missing package; I can’t imagine the amount of hassle I’d have to go through to get them to replace it.

The one thing I learned from this experience is that you shouldn’t wait too long to contact your local post office when you realize that your package is lost or “misdelivered” as they like to refer to it. If you call within a couple of days then there is a great chance that the mail carrier will remember what happened to the package. If you wait a week or longer then they are a lot less likely to recall what they did with the package, let alone what it looks like. It’s a lot like abductions in that sense, I guess. After 48 hours, the trail gets cold. At any rate, I really hope that our mail carrier starts paying better attention because I’ve got a few more packages coming and I really don’t want to go through this again. =P

I Love Jeans Month

Posted on November 15, 2011 by under Outfits, Vanity.

We are raising money for one of our coworkers so we get to wear jeans pretty much all month. All we have to do is pay a dollar for each jean day. I’m loving it because then I can be more adventurous with my work outfits. My typical work attire is generally pretty conservative. I pretty much just stick to dress pants and boring blouses. I’m not even that adventurous when it comes to colors. I wear lots of blacks, grays and browns. LOL.

2011-11-14 20.18.33.jpg 2011-11-15 07.22.37.jpg

The photo on the left was my work attire on Monday. I wouldn’t normally wear something like this, but Brian convinced me that it was okay. I’m glad I listened to him because I actually got compliments.

The photo on the right was what I wore today. I was going for the equestrian look. LOL. I actually didn’t even put the outfit together in my mind until I was in the shower. I’m glad everything fit. I was mostly worried about the J.Crew boots that I’ve had for like eight years. They used to be quite snug around my calves. I usually wore them with skirts. Thankfully, my calves have shrank enough that I can now wear them over skinny jeans. Woot! That really made my day.

2011-11-15 11.20.00.jpg

Brian came to see me at lunch today. It was a nice treat because we rarely see each other over lunch anymore. There’s not really been a point since I’m just drinking shakes for lunch. I just end up drinking my shake at my desk and working through lunch most days. Lame, I know.

I just had a shake again today so we pretty much just spent our lunch hour goofing around and taking photos of each other. LOL.

Spanish is Cutting Into My Zumba

Posted on November 14, 2011 by under Things to Do.

Beginning in January, I’m going to attend Spanish on Monday nights. This means no Swing or Zumba. It’s tough enough alternating between the two. Now I have to throw Spanish in the mix. Ugh.

Incidentally, I missed my friend Rene’s Zumba debut. Gina Ann said he came to class tonight. And I wasn’t there to see it because Brian and I were at Swing lessons.

I missed Zoe’s Group Power class tonight also because I opted to tag along as Brian ran errands. Our first stop was at the mall to exchange a jar that Brian thought had been tampered with. Then we went to pick up Brian’s dry cleaning. I was actually looking forward to that because I was planning on stopping by Wild at Heart while Brian was at In the Bag. I was bummed when we got there because the store is closed. I think they’ve consolidated everything at their West location.

2011-11-14 18.05.44.jpg

We did discover a new wine place, though. It’s called Extremo Vino and it’s really neat. I love that they have a record of all of your wine purchases, which you can access through their web site. You can also leave comments about the various wines and read recommendations and feedback from other people. Prices are comparable to Groves according to Brian. With this new place being more modern and hip, I think our regular trips to Groves may be a thing of the past. Specially since Extremo Vino is just down the street from us. You all need to check it out. The selection is great and the people are super nice. I think we’ve found a new favorite liquor store!
