Update on Ching’s Health

Posted on December 20, 2009 by under Health.

I wouldn’t call myself a numbers girl, but I do like to use charts and graphs to explain things. It helps me to understand my behaviors and attitudes.

I invited Brian to play racquetball with me today. He’s like, “Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m better.”

“How do you know you’re better?”

You all know that I hate taking medicine, right? My reluctance/willingness to take medicine decreases/increases as my level of misery increases as shown in the graph below. Today when I was taking my daily dose of DayQuil, it took me a couple of minutes to shore up my distaste for medicine. Whereas before (when I was really, really sick), I was drinking DayQuil like they were shots of [insert your favorite liquor here]. LOL.

Anyway, my point is: I must be better because I’m back to hating medicine again!

Invasion of the Christmas Lights

Posted on December 19, 2009 by under Things to Do.

On the way home from Von Maur, we got to talking about this street by our house that looks like Vegas when you drive by. It’s a street off of Mainsgate. You can’t miss it because the abundance of bright lights almost makes it necessary to wear your sunglasses at night.

~So I can, So I can~ (Sorry, Corey Hart. I just had to do it.)

It almost looks like each neighbor is trying to outdo the other. One neighbor started to put up these ostentatious Christmas light displays and then the next neighbor was like, “I can do better than that!” Another neighbor saw it and was like, “I can do even better than those two!” And the next neighbor and the next, until the entire street was lit up. That’s how it looks driving by.

Anyway, Brian was inspired by this whole conversation so we made a detour. We took the scenic route driving home and ended up in College Hill. The homes in College Hill have some of the best Christmas light displays in town. They have Christmas carolers walking along the streets to boot. It really makes you want to live there (or not live there, if you’re a grouch – LOL).

Jan was telling us about these sticks wrapped in colorful Christmas lights on the yards of several houses along this one street. Naturally, we had to look for it. It really is amazing. I thought it was creative use of tubing. We figured they must have an HOA that did all of those because they were pretty uniform. Either that or all of those neighbors agreed to put the same tubing covered with lights on all of their yards. That’s quite a lot of homes. Christmas has a way of bringing people together, I guess. That’s really nice.

Of course none of the displays we drove by today were quite the same level as the Best Christmas Lights Displays of 2009 shown on TLC’s Invasion of the Christmas Lights special. These people are just downright obsessed. Most of the people featured on the show started putting their lights up in September. Many of them worked on perfecting their lighting choreography throughout the year. One guy even went to jail because of his lights. Why anyone would want to send someone to jail or why one would actually allow it to get to that point is beyond me. It’s crazy.

Invasion of the Christmas Lights is set to repeat on the 24th and 25th. I think those times listed are Eastern Standard Time so tune in to TLC 10 AM on the 24th or 9 AM on Christmas Day to see the amazing, out of this world Christmas light displays that people have come up with this year.

Only Diamonds Last Forever

Posted on December 19, 2009 by under Life.

I’m so upset. I tried to wear my Brighton fleur de lis stud earrings today, but the post broke as I was putting the first one on. I was so disappointed. I was thinking they were sturdier than that. Only diamonds last forever, I guess. Brighton is only guaranteed for a year. =P

“Look up the phone number to Von Maur please,” I told Brian since he was on his laptop. “You’ve had those for over a year,” he told me. “You’re S-O-L.”

“No way,” I insisted. “It hasn’t been a year since I got these.” To prove it, I asked him to open our blog on a new tab. I had him do a search for “fleur de lis” and, sure enough, this blog entry was first on the list of search results. I was like, “Right there! What’s the date on on that?”

February 18, 2009. Boo-yah!

I love how my prolific blogging has a way of vindicating me. LOL. I knew that it hadn’t been a year since I bought the earrings! It’s nearing the one year mark, though. In a way, I’m kind of glad that they broke today rather than later. At least it’s still within the one-year-guarantee time period. They could have broken in March. Then I would have really been S-O-L, or so Brian eloquently puts it.

So I got on the phone with Von Maur. I spoke with Jocelyn to see if they could help me out. She told me to just bring it in. The problem was, I was putting the earrings on because I was heading out to a movie. Brian and I were meeting Jan, David, Donna, and Chad at Warren East for Avatar. Lucky for me, Von Maur doesn’t close until 9 PM.

The movie was fantastic, by the way. Almost made me forget about my broken earrings. Not quite, though. I’m still upset about them being broken. The movie is really good, though. I’m eager to see it again, but in 3D this time. We have plans to do that after April and Cory return from Texas. But I digress…

The movie was only two and a half hours long, but after restroom stops and chatting at the theater it was well after 7 PM by the time we got out of there.

Brian was like, “Is it okay if we stop by Cory and April’s first? I told them we would stop by around seven thirty and it’s seven thirty right now.” I told him that was fine as long as we stopped only long enough to drop off our gift for Gavin and didn’t stick around. I’m really glad that we stopped by today, too. We found out that Cory and April are leaving on Monday to spend Christmas in Texas. If we hadn’t stopped by, we would have missed them altogether and Gavin wouldn’t have gotten his present until after Christmas. Isn’t it weird how things just fall into place?

But I’m digressing yet again…

We arrived at Von Maur about a quarter ’til 8 PM. Jocelyn had left for the day, unfortunately. She left at 5 PM. This nice lady named Kayla helped us, though. After explaining to her what had happened, she tried to help us look for those earrings. They did not have any in stock, but she said she could phone other stores to see if they had them. She told me that if we sent the earrings back for repair, it could take a couple of months before they’d be back so it would be faster to replace them. I figured whatever is easiest. I’m just grateful that they’re willing to help me. She took my name and number and promised she would call me once she locates the earrings. In the meantime, I’m going to wait patiently with fingers crossed.

Ching is a “Bed” Potato

Posted on December 18, 2009 by under Life.

Second Fitting

I spent the entire day in bed again today, recovering from this sickness. I’m tired of being sick already. Anyway, since I was at home by myself with nothing to do, I’d been watching TV. I was a total “bed” potato. I watched several episodes of Platinum Weddings on WEtv and TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress.

I’d heard of Say Yes to the Dress before, but I’d never seen or heard of Platinum Weddings. The show is like My Super Sweet 16 for brides. These are the most lavish and extravagant weddings. They’re just out of this world. It’s fun to watch, but it makes you wonder what these people do for a living to afford spending so much money on an event that only lasts a few hours. With divorce rates being so high, is it wise to go into debt for a wedding? I mean, you don’t want to be paying for your wedding long after you’re divorced. LOL. Unless, these people just have so much money that $1M for a wedding is just chump change and they just have it laying around so they don’t have to borrow it. The whole wedding industry sure didn’t seem to be in a recession from what I watched on TV today.

Since we’re now watching a Say Yes to the Dress marathon, Brian was like “How many dresses did you try on?” I actually tried on several dresses, but I ended up choosing the first one that I tried on. Here are some of the dresses, I tried on.

Watching all those bridal and wedding shows on TV today made me relive memories of our wedding. It’s a shame you only get married once. LOL. It was so much fun. I want to do it all over again.

Maybe in 8 years Brian and I can renew our vows for our 15th wedding anniversary (or after 13 years for our 20th). It won’t be a Platinum Wedding, but I’m sure it will be amazing and just as fun as the first time around (if not more).

Bob at Uncle Roy’s

Posted on December 18, 2009 by under Poker.

Bob at Uncle Roy's

The one and only time that we miss poker (aside from the two weeks in October when we were in the Philippines), everyone shows up. Just my luck! I felt specially bad because Brian’s dad’s boss (Bob) was in town. I’m so glad that Sunny and Kurt were around.

If I wasn’t at home, I wouldn’t even have found out Bob was even in town until later (I don’t check FB at work; I just happened to be laying in bed with nothing better to do). I gave Brian a hard time about that. I was like, “You didn’t tell me your dad’s boss was in town! He was at poker last night. You really should have gone.”

Brian goes, “Yes, but you’re sick and I didn’t want to leave you.” My husband is so sweet. “You wouldn’t have gone without me.”

“Yes, I would have! It’s only a couple of hours. I would have been fine.” I’m fine by myself while he’s at work. I just take some NyQuil and doze off. LOL.

“I didn’t want to go without you.” He is so sweet, right?

I think if he knew that Bob was going to be there (they’d never met, because Brian was in Germany the last time that Bob was in town), then he would have pried himself away from me for a while. This is Bob’s last trip to Wichita for the year, I’m sure. And, it’s not very often that he has to come to Wichita because, you know, Brian’s dad is so good.

Actually, it worked out for Dill that we weren’t there. He actually cashed (1-2 chop) last night. 😉 Just kidding! Congrats, Jay!
