Thanksgiving Holiday 2016

Posted on December 12, 2016 by under Family, Things to Do.

We had a super quiet Thanksgiving lunch this year. It was just Brian, grandma, and me. Brian’s parents usually do their own Thanksgiving in Oklahoma. I invited my parents but they were still both recovering from illness and feeling antisocial. They didn’t feel like joining us. I even offered to bring them some food but mom declined. I also invited Jenni via text but never heard back.

All of our friends were doing their own Thanksgivings. Initially, our friend Chad said he would swing by but he ended up canceling last minute. We ended up with way more food than three people could eat. It worked out great though, because then grandma was able to take some food home with her.

This was our first year without Fresh Market. We ended up getting food from Dillons. The food was okay but definitely not as good as the quality of the Thanksgiving meal we get from Fresh Market. Most of the items were off the shelf rather than prepared fresh like the Thanksgiving dinner we get from Fresh Market. This is definitely a case of “you get what you pay for” except Fresh Market is no longer an option since they closed their store.

Brian and I agreed that we will need to figure out a better plan for next year because we are definitely not going to order the Dillons Thanksgiving dinner again.

Brian had to work on Black Friday this year so I was pretty much on my own. In years past, we’ve both had the day off so we’ve braved the Black Friday mobs and have actually gone shopping. We switched gears the last few year and have done most of our shopping online so I didn’t really feel an urge to go Black Friday shopping this year. Besides, it’s not as much fun without Brian.

Untitled

Instead of shopping, I decided to spend the day with my little sister.

Untitled

We started with breakfast at Doo-Dah Diner. I love that they give you free monkey bread while you wait for your meal. It’s my most favorite part of eating there.

Untitled

Doo-Dah was busy that day so we just sat at the counter.

Untitled

Nickira originally wanted pancakes but then she saw chicken and waffles on the menu so she switched to that instead. I was worried that the meal would be too big so I convinced her to split it with me. I’m glad we split it because it was not quite what Nickira expected.

Untitled

She was not a fan of the chocolate dipped bacon. She actually gave me hers. Oh, and you can tell which half is which by the egg. Nickira wanted a runny yolk on her egg, while I wanted mine fried hard.

It was just the right amount of food for me.

Untitled

After breakfast we were off to Winter Art Mania at the Wichita Art Museum.

Untitled

And then after doing all of the activities inside, we decided to go for a stroll through the art garden and take some photos. I just love the Wichita Art Museum!

Untitled

This hasn’t been our typical Thanksgiving or Black Friday. Actually, this hasn’t been our typical year. Yet, despite all of the obstacles and challenges, we managed to find joy in everything. I’m so grateful for the love of our family and friends and for all that we have. We are truly blessed.

Pictures from Our Tour of Victoria Falls

Posted on November 24, 2016 by under Family, Life.

Untitled

It was bright and sunny that day so Brian loaned grandma his sunglasses. Doesn’t she look absolutely stylish in them?

Untitled

One of the things I liked about the place is that they had chairs everywhere so any time you got tired of walking you could just have a seat as needed.

Untitled

This is grandma going through her long list of questions with Tom, facility director.

Untitled

Untitled

This is Brian pretending to pay attention. Just kidding. He really was paying attention. I promise.

Untitled

One of grandma’s favorite nurses moved here from the place where she currently lives. We ran into her and we had a nice visit.

Untitled

All of the residents we encountered seemed super happy to be living there. Everyone appeared satisfied and happy with the service. There was this one guy in a scooter who was really funny. He was like, “You guys must be pretty special to get Tom here on a Sunday.”

I love the aviary that they have in the middle of the room.

Untitled

Here’s a better picture of it.

Untitled

You don’t need fake nature sounds when you can hear real birds chirping away.

Untitled

This would probably be my favorite spot if I lived there.

Untitled

I find bird sounds so calming and relaxing.

Untitled

I also like the nice private courtyard in the middle of the facility.

Untitled

We walked through there to get to the dining hall.

Untitled

It will be the perfect spot for nice days.

Untitled

Brian loved the train trolley in the middle of the dining room.

Untitled

Untitled

It’s a nice touch.

Untitled

There are also booths in there so you can eat inside the trolley if you like.

Untitled

There’s also a beauty salon onsite.

Untitled

And a bistro for the dessert socials.

Untitled

Untitled

This is where they play bingo and movies.

Untitled

There are also various game tables like billiards and shuffleboard, which is perfect for the more active residents of the facility.

Untitled

Untitled

And all of the hallways are nice and wide. Perfect for zooming around in a motorized chair or scooter.

Untitled

There are lots of activities for the residents, which gives everyone ample opportunities to socialize.

Untitled

Here’s the November calendar up close.

Untitled

The best part is that all residents are issued a safety pendant that they can push in case of emergency. This would have been perfect that time that grandma fell in her apartment. It might have saved her from further injuries from having to crawl over to the phone. With this, she can just push the button and help would be on its way.

Untitled

I liked the facility overall but this is by far our favorite feature. We are looking forward to moving grandma here in a few weeks. I think she will really love it here.

Saturdate with Grandma

Posted on September 1, 2016 by under Family, Food and Drink, Things to Do.

We had a wonderful “day date” with grandma over the weekend. It started with Brian and grandma’s monthly trip to the grocery store. I had to teach Zumba class so I just met up with them at home afterwards.

Untitled

We decided to take grandma to this new restaurant we discovered a few weeks ago, the Hungry Heart. It’s right next to the Intrust Bank Arena and occupies the space where Jetty’s used to be. The food is phenomenal and the service is fantastic. I wish we could go there more often.

Untitled

By the way, I caught a Goldeen while we were waiting for our food. The little fella was right in front of grandma. Besides Pokemons, there were also lots of people milling about downtown because Saturday was Crawl for Cancer day. Grandma got to see some of the groups as the massive pub crawl commenced.

Untitled

Here are some pictures of our food. Grandma wanted to go with something light so she just ordered a salad.

Untitled

I got the 2015 Wingapalooza “award winning” wings. I had them the last time and they were amazing so I had to get them again. Incidentally, I missed this year’s Wingapalooza due to another commitment. I’m not sure how they fared this year.

Untitled

Brian got the pulled pork sandwich again. He really enjoyed it last time.

Untitled

I also got an order of fries for me and grandma to share because Brian loves their fries so much that he doesn’t share his. I didn’t get a picture of the pulled pork eggroll thingies that we had as our starter because our server forgot them. I was just going to cancel that order because then we were going to get full on our meals but she said she had already put them in. The eggroll things came shortly after we started eating our food. She was nice and didn’t charge us for them, though.

Untitled

After lunch, we were off to the Wichita Art Museum to see the Chihuly Drawings exhibit. As WAM members, Brian and I saw the exhibit when it first opened but we were waiting until the weather had cooled off enough to take grandma.

Untitled

As an added bonus, we also got to see the Jesse Alexander: The Golden Age of Motorsport exhibit which consisted of some amazing photographs.

It turned out to be the perfect day for a “day date” with grandma. I’m so glad our schedules worked out and we got to go.

The Chihuly Drawings exhibit ends on September 11 and the Jesse Alexander exhibit ends on October 2. Be sure to swing by the Wichita Art Museum this month to check them out. You don’t want to miss these!

Birthdays Galore

Posted on July 13, 2016 by under Events, Family.

We had multiple birthdays this past weekend.

Untitled

Madison’s birthday cookout was our first stop on Friday night.

Untitled

On Saturday night we had Logan’s birthday first, followed by Misty’s birthday. Don’t let the picture on the cake fool you. Logan turned 13 today. They used an old picture of him for the cake.

Untitled

Can you believe the woman above birthed Logan 16 years ago?

Untitled

My favorite part of parties at mom’s house is the abundance of Filipino food. This is Filipino-style pork barbecue.

Untitled

Next we have chicken and pork adobo.

Untitled

We didn’t stay long at Logan’s birthday because we also committed to attending Misty’s 40th birthday at Ernie Biggs. Here’s a picture of Lindsay and Misty.

Untitled

Cari was there too.

Untitled

Ernie Biggs has been around for a few years now but it was actually our first time there. It’s a great place for celebrating special occasions. We had a great time celebrating Misty’s birthday.

Now that we’ve made it through the multiple birthday weekend, we’re gearing up for another busy weekend. Holly and Meader get married on Saturday. Hurrah! We are super excited for them.

Family Celebration

Posted on July 2, 2016 by under Family.

Brian’s parents were in town a couple of weeks ago to celebrate Father’s Day, Brian’s birthday, and grandma’s birthday – in keeping with the tradition of celebrating all three events together. Brian’s brother Kevin and his son Andy joined us for dinner as well.

Here are some pictures…

Brian got a new Star Wars doormat. They don’t sell this exact one on Amazon but, if you would like one for yourself, here’s a link to some doormat options.

LongHorn Steakhouse Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

I’m not a huge fan of Longhorn, which is why I didn’t take any food pictures. The food there is good but nothing to write home about. It’s very much like most other steakhouses.

Anyway, I wasn’t planning on taking any food pictures at all until dessert came out. This plate of sugar and carbs was so magnificent I couldn’t help but take a picture (see below). It’s large enough to feed a small village. And, it tasted even better than it looks. Brian and I agreed that we will have to return just for dessert. Chocolate stampede, indeed!

Untitled

Brian also really likes their brew pub pretzel sticks. He loves pretzels and cheese so it’s right up his alley. The amazing dessert wins it for me.

We had a wonderful time celebrating with family. Here’s to another memorable year!

NOTE TO GRANDMA: I printed all the pictures for you. I just need to get Brian to deliver them. 😉
